Hello all.
I'm working on raising my Chocobo digging skill now and since the update I'm very interested in the new Racing silks. I wasn't interested in raising a chocobo before, but now that the silks are available I will raise my first bird.
Because I'm a digger, naturally I want a digging chocobo... but because I want racing silks I'm afraid I won't be able to earn them at a good rate. From what I've been reading you can earn a good chuck of chocobucks every day in Free Runs but only 1-5 per day in Chocobo digging (if you're sucessful).
So my question is, can a Chocobo raised for digging win the free runs for chocobucks? Or do I need to raise a racing chocobo if I'd like more than one silk in the next year >:( Also, are there other ways of earning Chocobucks I don't know about?

It's possible, but it's not as easy as having a dedicated chocobo for it.
What I did was every day I would do Hot/Cold digs in Buburimu or Valkurm for 3-point coupons. There's a good risk/reward level for these. I had the best luck in Buburimu.
As for the free runs, your chocobo should be able to win 1-2 every day if you run 5 or so. This will cost you 1150+ per day, so a small fee. After several runs, you'll begin to see the pattern of races. This will let you know which races coming up your chocobo can win, which it can't, and which ones you'll need an item to win. Speed Apple has been the best in my experience (may be cheapest to make your own). They're not terribly expensive and if you set them to be used at the end of the race, they can pull you ahead against certain opponents. There will always be a race that you can win no matter what and there will always be a race that you will lose no matter what as a result of using a digger.
You should be able to make a minimum of 5 chocobucks per day this way, often somewhere around 10, and about 15 on a good day.
And as far as I know, those are the only two ways to get chocobucks.

Get all your Hot and Cold maps and then do them in altepa. You get 5 chocobucks for every successful treasure chest in the highest level areas. 1 per easy area and 3 in medium level areas.
In racing free races you get at least one chocobuck per race unless you come in dead last. You get 3 for a second place and 5 for 1st place win.
The races cost from 100 gil progressing up to 1000 gil per race each day. Resets every day at rollover back to 100 gil. There are about 8 (can't remember the exact number) races before you get the 1000 gil race and all are 1000 gil after that for that day. There is no limit on the number of races you can do each day. When I was trying for chocobucks to dye my bird I tried and tried and couldn't win a single chocobuck with my slow ass bird. Eventually I just dug for it. Now I'll be digging again ;/
yes you can, you only need 150 chocobucks for 1 silk, and between chocobo Hot & cold and free run you get enough to buy 1 or 2.
I have a digging chocobo with stat 2/1/8/7 , and he won the first official races ( to unlock free run) without a single problem , there are 8 different free races , the first will be against 3 super chocobos (unbeatable even with capped chocobo without items.. ) and 5 with one of them (still even with my capped chocobo cant win without items) and the last 2 with non of them, in these 2 I manage to win them all the time with my digging chocobo getting 10 Chocobucks! so every 8 races you will get at least 10, no need to raise a racing chocobo just for silk.

The time-traveling is just too dangerous. Better that I devote myself to study the other great mystery of the universe: women.
A digger choco can win but it is not going to get chocobucks anywhere near as fast as a racing choco will.
Still if you can use the foods and do free races you should be able to get one chocobuck per race. You have to be dead last to not get at least one chocobuck.
You can probably do it cheaper to raise a racing choco to 29 and start using that one instead of digger.
Racing a choco 150 races for one jacket has to be nothing short of agonizingly slow although I know at least one person doing just that till her choco baby gets old enough to race.
If your digger choco has more stats than discernment and receptivity it will do a lot better racing.

Having access to both a Racing 8/7/3/1 and Digging 6/3/8/1 Chocobo, I can tell you that Racing Chocobos have 0 Advantage of Racing Chocobos in free races. You will always be somewhere in 1st to 4th place in every free run. What determines your place in each race is the number of "Super Chocobos". There are three super chocobos that will beat you in free races no matter how fast your chocobo runs, while you beat all the generic chocobos.
The Super Chocobos are as follows:
Star Onion: Taru on a Green Chocobo
Meteor Brian: Elvaan on a Black Chocobo
and Invincible Leg: Galka on a Blue Chocobo
If 0 Super Chocobos are in the race, you'll get 1st place even if a generic appears to be in front of you. If 1 is in the race, you'll get 2nd place, 2 will put you in 3rd, and 4 will put you in 4th.

Any bird with capped stats will win 3 races (5 CBs each), come in second on 4 (3 CBs each), and 4th in one (1 CB), for a total of 28 CBs / day. The cost of the "Free" runs goes 100 Gil > 150 > 200 > 300 > 400 > 600 > 800 > 1K each day. 1K remains the price for the rest of the day.
Without racer attributes it is unlikely you will beat any of the superbirds without items and not too likely with them. With a good racing bird and no items I beat the superbirds ~ 6 - 8 times a week (that's 35 races against them). Of course some of those are moving from 4th to 3rd place in the 4 superbird race so no increase in earnings....

While it may not be applicable, I'd like to point out that if you use the chocobo circuit, it's easy to get 15 chocobucks a day just from racing. The C4 class rewards 15 chocobobucks for first place (10 for entrance fee, 25 for victory).
With better chocobos, you can earn 20, 30, and even 40 chocobucks for first place. You must place top 3 to earn back the entrance fee when using these races though.
