Hi im looking to make a few more gil than I do currently.
At the moment I am levelling fishing and am at lv50, I have about 1.5mil saved up and Im wondering where is best to invest it. Should I invest in cooking (which I imagine to be complimentary to fishing) or should I try another craft?

Fishing is an awesome compliment to fishing. You can skill up and make profits on cooking at the same time. My fishing is at 57 and cooking at 97 with alchemy at 53. I go to SSG and fish in the lake with Lu's and Shrimp Lure for Grims, Bastores, and Nebs. Grims cap out in the 90's for fishing, it's not fast skills but at least thier there. The nebs i usually just sell out right unless the market looks good for black inks. IMO you should have Alchemy up if your a fisherman, its easy gil. The Grims and Bastore get made into Tav Tacos. Cooking is really easy to get up to around 90 ish pretty cheap. 90+ doesn't cost as much as other crafts but is a pain in the **** to get to 100. I make enough gil to support my jobs and I usually keep the few HQ's i get from tacos or sushi that i'm making for myself and sell the rest for profit. It is time consuming getting all the ingredients and fishing everything up. But seeing that your at level 50 fishing you probably won't have a problem with that. The only down side is there's alot of other ppl in the same market. Seeing 107 satcks of sushi that just went up after 3 hours of crafting/fishing is kind of a bummer. But hey, at least the food doesn't spoil. I can't really speak for the other crafts on the benefits fishing has for them. The stickies are a great resource which i use alot here. If you love fishing then stay with it, it still has good gil making potential for using in another craft if you so choose.

Most of the time with cooking you'll either break even or make some profit. Fishing helps as a lot of easy skillup recipes come with only a couple of fish. Also, you can make sushi with Raw Fish Handling, which in the long run can save you some gil if you fish it yourself.

Cooking and Fishing go together perfectly, however the sushi market is really rough. A lot of fishermen and high level cooks dominate the market and you will get undercut. Most of the time, too, you will more make more money selling the fish you fish up to the AH or NPC (like soles).
Do not let that steer you away from Cooking. Personally, I love cooking. But it is true that the margin is not great. However there are a lot of positives:

Fishing and cooking go well together.
Cooking is a very cheap investment.
There are a lot of recipes that gain profit.
You can save money on your favorite food.
You can sell directly to people who have a certain niche for food (say, a BST in your LS who wants zeta cookies).
A lot of recipes can be made from NPC items (melon pies).

So, if I were you, I would take the 1.5M and either invest it into Cooking (but for the love of all that is holy, do not PL (if you must then do it)), or just taking fishing to 100. Fishing alone is a huge money maker.

Good luck to you :D.

Cooking's only a good idea if you have tons of time to list and re-list items on the AH. Back when I was unemployed I could make ~2 mill a week fairly easily, but RL time constraints have cut that considerably.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd have gone for woodworking and fishing instead of cooking and fishing.

100 cooking. Regret it. If I could, i woulda started smithing in the first place. Since your fishing is so high already, i would cook if i were you. You will profit fishing ur ingredients.
