I've never been clear on this, but how much is considered to be flooding the AH with a certain item? Take Nebs for instance a there's always a huge supply of them up. If there were say... 20 stacks on the AH, how many of mine should I put up? 3? 5? I take it 7 would be considered flooding and prices would start to drop as people undercut the 27 other stacks.

To me flooding is when you have more than you can put on AH and you keep adding as your stuff sells, adjusting the price as necessary to make sure your crap sells first. If you put 7 up and go do other crap for a day or so, and let other people's junk sell too before you add more, I wouldn't consider that flooding at all.

I say that for equipment usable by many jobs i would say about 3-4 should be on ah at once. For consumables, and food i'd recommend putting up about 5 so it does not get undercutted. For Nebs id put up 7 stacks because they sell like 25 stacks a day easily.

More then twice the amount the item sells in a day is flooding, IMO.

IMO, if you make 8 sales in a row while when you know there are other sellers for the same item, then you're definitely flooding.

If I see you sell 7 in a row, and then someone else, I'm thinking I don't have to undercut. If I see you sell 8 in a row or more, I'll know that you're just constantly undercutting my stock, so I'll have to undercut even further. That's a vicious cycle that you don't want to start on something you want to profit off of long term.

It really depends on what you are selling. Some high price items are flooded if there are more than a couple a month on the AH. If only one or two sell a day then more than a couple is flooding. I think it is hard to flood the market on items like earth crystals.
Study the history of what you are selling. See what it will bear before prices start falling. If sellers start, consistently, undercutting that might also be a sign that it is flooded.

Basically the same thing as 'dumping' is in real life.

E.g. intentionally selling product bellow what it costs you to make it just to get rid of it, or to try to establish yourself in that market (in ffxi that's usually getting other crafters out).

Of couse, it's a bit difficult to quantify that way in FFXI, b/c there's a lot of NQ stuff that sells at a loss, b/c a crafter is after a HQ.

So...I'd say it's if you're screwing up the market, you're flooding.

For example, if you're leveling up a craft and attempt to sell 200 of something by lowering it's price for the next 3 months, you flooded that market.

This is a pretty good estimate of what defines "flooding".

So here comes the trick question.

Would it be flooding to sit next to the AH bazaaring with 8+ of said item priced below AH price?

I would assume not, since most people are too lazy to to check a bazaar for a specific item they need when they are at the AH anyway.

I could see it having the same effect as flooding. But it would require the seller to consistently maintain stock, for word to spread about this persistent bazaar, and for buyers to cooperate.

The only places where you could set up a bazaar which would be convenient for players also add a significant tax. So the seller would have to undercut the market by quite a bit to still offer a price below the AH after taxes.

I tend to find that only a small percentage of people actually mull through Bazars anyway. A lot of these are only looking for 'top end', non AH-able or rare items as well.
I think crafters tend to look through more as they are always looking for raw materials. Normie players dont tend to as much.

Too much tax and Lag in Whitegate, not as many people in Jeuno and Hardly any in Tavnazia means that while it would have an impact I think it would be minimal.

There are things that sell so fast you just can't flood the AH with them. Spiderwebs. Goblin armor pieces. Nebs.

Then there are items that never sell. One of those up is flooding.
