I'm just getting into crafting, with my alchemy at level 8. how do you produce HQ items? do you have to synth something thats half your level? or is it a random occurrence? help me out, guys :)

Making a HQ item is a random occurrence, but having higher skill helps.
0-10 Levels above a recipe cap: 1% HQ rate
11-30 levels above a recipe cap: 10% HQ rate
31-50 levels above a recipe cap: 25% HQ rate
51+ levels above a recipe cap: 50% HQ rate
You can get a HQ below the cap, but it's rare. Desynthesis recipes follow different rules, no one knows them, but you're capped at about 50% success rate.

From the stories I've heard (and personal experence) it's 'Under the cap' but with advanced support, which infact puts you at/over the cap. So it's not really under the cap. But your under the cap.

I have actually HQ'd an item when I was fully under the cap, twice now. One was a Bone Ring +1 (exciting, I know, right?), and the other was a synth of Horn Arrows. I cannot provide proof of this, unfortunately. I didn't screenshot them, just went "hmm, that's kinda cool," and kept grinding.

I HQ'd a Monastic Sautee when I was still skilling up on them way back when. It was the only cooking HQ I ever got under the cap.
I've gotten a HQ synth in woodworking here and there, but it wasn't really until I started using skill equipment to have the T0 that I saw "regular" HQs.

I've never HQed below the cap after items/support. I have, however, tier-0 HQed due to support and/or items on more worthless synths than I can count. My personal 'favorite' is the Hosodachi +1. I've now made FIVE of them. The synth is Gold 64 + Alchy 57 + Leather 40. At least the last time I made one it didn't take 6 months to sell.

kk then, all my crafting sessions usually like to HQ a T0 as soon as I hit it. I was making tigerfangs and as soon as I hit 5 under the cap I HQ'd one.
I also wasted my first t0 HQ on a rabbit mantle.. >:O
