I. Introduction to Mining
Mining is not for everyone. Some of my friends have tried it and have had little luck. One friend in particular claimed he never broke even on a trip. With that being said, mining was the first thing that actually worked for me in terms of profit gain. I can recall only one instance where I did not break even. I feel comfortable saying that 99% of the time, you will AT LEAST gain your investment cash back and will likely make a nice profit along with it.
So, wait. Are you saying that you have had good experience with mining but others might not?
Correct. Unlike Chocobo Digging, there is no hidden internal skill to mining. However, by improving your knowledge of mining in general and mining points, you will be in much better shape than those who don’t know any better. I suggest you read on a bit and then try mining out for yourself before deciding whether or not it is right for you.
Do you want to try it out? Great, but here are a few things to consider before heading out to the mines:
- Consider using THF as your main job or subjob. Their Flee ability is priceless when mining, especially when you are traversing long areas in between nodes.
- Be considerate of others. There are some people out there that will steal your mining points. This is very frustrating, but it is not advised to retaliate with the same action. You will make more money if you do not create enemies with fellow miners, even if they are stealing your points. If this happens to you, I suggest traveling to another location, take a break, or simply ask the person nicely to not steal your points. When all else fails, pack up and head somewhere else or simply wait it out.
- Invest in some mining gear. Whether it is the Field or Worker set, they both offer the same bonuses (except for a slight defense increase). Although the Field and Worker set’s descriptions are a bit misleading, they do not improve your mining results. They only cut down on pickaxe breakage, but that is a huge thing. Get the mining gear as soon as you can afford it.
- Use a mining macro like:
/targetnpc
/item "Pickaxe" <t>
- Unless you need them for a specific craft, chunk all pebbles, tin, and copper ores on the spot. They waste too much space and do not yield a profit worth the trouble.
- Buy pickaxes at local vendors, not from the Auction House. I have seen unfortunate people scammed into buying picks for +1000g when you can buy them from the vendor for about 200g a pop.
- Depending on the location, competition can be a good thing. At some places, nodes are spread out so far that it isn't very time efficient to mine there by yourself. Be aware of your surroundings, and adapt as neccessary.
- Your chance of pickaxe breakage is really a random value. Sometimes you may strike a single node nine times with no breaks, while another time you break on every hit.
- It has never been confirmed that the time or type of day affects your mining results. The only thing for certain that is affected by the day is the type of colored rock you can excavate.
II. The Art of Sneak Mining
If you try Mining out and enjoy it, then I suggest building your character towards a Sneak Miner. Sneak Mining is the art of going to high level mining locations by way of the spells Sneak and Invisible, regardless of your character’s level. These advanced mines are very profitable, but can also come at a cost if you are not patient and careful.
Sneak Mining is not recommended for beginning miners as it requires a solid knowledge of mining mechanics and locations in order to turn a profit (and ultimately survive). You constantly have to watch your back for mobs and remember what their agro mechanics are or you will end up dead quick.
Sneak Mining has been around since early FFXI history. Back then, the spells Sneak and Invisible were sought after and used for it. This is still the case for some people, but it has become much more popular to use the Dancer’s Spectral Jig instead.
Spectral Jig casts both Sneak and Invisible on you at no cost. You can obtain it at level 25. This is great due to casting both sneak and invisible at the same time and not being a magic ability (which many mobs in higher level dungeons detect). This is the recommended choice for sneak mining these days but feel free to use the magic counterparts instead if you feel the need to do so.
The ultimate mining setup would be DNC/THF due to Spectral Jig and Flee, but isn’t required by any means.
III. Materials and Their Uses
The following is a list of ores and materials that you may discover while mining. This should give you an idea of what each material is used for outside of just selling it on the Auction House. The given “worth” for each item is based on pricing and demand currently on the Diabolos server and may not reflect your own server. Please do some research on the prices for your own server before determining whether something is worth carrying around or not.
---Smithing & Goldsmithing---
Name: Adaman Ore
Worth: High
Locations:
Mount Zhayolm
Recipes:
Adaman Ingot - Smithing (91)
Dark Adaman - Smithing (86)
Frigid Core - Smithing (90)
Inferno Core - Smithing (90)
Luminous Core - Smithing (90)
Spirit Core - Smithing (90)
Notes: Back in the old days, this was the king of ores. Much like Khroma Ore these days, it fetched a nice profit; although it was quite rare. It’s still rare today, but not worth near as much as it used to be.
Besides smithing recipes, Adaman Ore is used as a material in a few quests.
Name: Aht Urhgan Brass
Worth: Medium
Locations:
Recipes:
Notes: When turned into an ingot/sheet, this item makes several AU-inspired furnishings and a few weapons. This ore tends to sell in spurts and may sell quickly while dragging at other times. Turning it into ingots or sheets can increase the sale price at the cost of a delay in sale.
Still, if you plan to mine Halvung a lot, it may be worth your time to level Goldsmithing up to turn these guys into ingots to save on pack space.
Name: Aluminum Ore
Worth: Low
Recipes:
Note: This can only be found in Newton Movalpolos. Unless you need them for Goldsmithing, these are generally not worth your time.

Name: Khroma Ore
Worth: Very High
Locations:
Mount Zhayolm
Recipes:
Imperial Wootz Ingot - Smithing (99)
Notes: This is the most expensive ore on the market at the moment. Found only at Mount Zhayolm.

Newton Movalpolos
Oldton Movalpolos
Recipes:
Mythril Ingot - Goldsmithing (41)

Halvung
Ifrit’s Cauldron
Frigid Orichalcum Ingot - Goldsmithing (90)
Orichalcum Ingot - Goldsmithing (89)
Scintillant Ingot - Goldsmithing (98)

Locations:
Gusgen Mines
Yughott Grotto
Palborough Mines
Zeruhn Mines
Newton Movalpolos
Recipes:
Tin Ingot - Smithing (15)

Oldton Movalpolos
Palborough Mines
Yughott Grotto
Zeruhn Mines
North Gustaberg (S)
Recipes:
Paktong Ingot - Smithing (20)
Zinc Oxide - Goldsmithing (1)
Notes: Zinc Ore is a hot seller at the Auction House for many reasons. One of the most famous uses is for raising Tenshodo fame by a Bastok quest. Although they don’t sell for much, they sell fast, are used for low level Goldsmithing recipes, and help supplement income for beginning miners.
---Desynthesis---
Name: Moblin Armor
Worth: Worthless to Low
Locations:
Mount Zhayolm
North Gustaberg (S)
Oldton Movalpolos
Desynth:
Clothcraft (9)
Notes: The lowest on the totem pole for desynth mining items. These generally don’t go for very much on the Auction House and don’t sell very quick when they do. It’s best to avoid these unless you desynth yourself.
Name: Moblin Mail
Worth: Low
Locations:
Mount Zhayolm
North Gustaberg (S)
Oldton Movalpolos
Desynth:

Name: Moblin Helm
Worth: Low
Locations:
Mount Zhayolm
North Gustaberg (S)
Oldton Movalpolos
Desynth:
Notes: These go for about the same as Moblin Mails and sell at about the same frequency as well.

Worth: Worthless to Low
Locations:
Mount Zhayolm
North Gustaberg (S)
Oldton Movalpolos
Desynth:
Leathercraft (31)
Notes: The little brother to Moblin Helms, these tend to sell at a decent pace but don’t go for very much at the auction house.

Desynth:
Notes: Exclusive to the AU mines, these sell like hotcakes to desynther’s.

Name: Plumbago

Locations:
Mount Zhayolm

Notes: These things are currently selling pretty fast due to the demand for them for an AU mission. Enjoy the quick profit while it lasts.
IV. Low Level Mining Locations
The following locations will probably some of the first mines you step in if you are a low level, non-sneak miner. These are generally easier to mine but come at the cost of a less satisfying profit. They are good places to get some practice though.
---Zeruhn Mines---
Drops
-----
Common:
Pebble
Copper Ore
Tin Ore
Uncommon:
Iron Ore
Zinc Ore
Rare:
Silver Ore
Snapping Mole
Very Rare:
Darksteel Ore
Suggested Level: 1+
Node Layout: Compact
Synopsis: This is where many will begin their mining experience, and others will end it.
I say that because the Zeruhn Mines are typically covered up with miners at any given time. That, along with the fact that it is also not one of the most profitable mines will likely turn many people away. Don't let this discourage you, as you can bring in a nice little profit for a low level character.
If there are other miners among you, study their routine and patterns. You will find that many follow a particular path. If this is the case, go the opposite of it. If they stay in one particular area, find yourself a cluster of points to check. I have easily found points with this tactic even when three or four other people have been mining at the same time as me.
You could start mining here as low as level one. However, if that be the case, you would need to steer clear of the single room that houses an aggresive, sound-detecting amoeba ranging from levels three to five.
Bottom Line: Although it can be crowded at times, this is a nice place to get started. I suggest making enough money to cover your expenses up to about level 20 and then move on to the next group of mines.
V. Mid Level Mining Locations
---Palborough Mines---
Drops
-----
Common:
Pebble
Copper Ore
Tin Ore
Uncommon:
Zinc Ore
Iron Ore
Rare:
Silver Ore
Mythril Ore
Very Rare:
Platinum Ore
Suggested Level:32
Node Layout: Very Loose
Synopsis: The Palborough Mines. This used to be the place to go for lower level characters in hopes of digging up some Platinum Ore. I would still consider this a step up from
the Zeruhn Mines, although it has lost some of its flair in the past few years. On Diabolos, Platinum Ore used to go for 15,000 - 20,000G a pop. Now, you are lucky to sell them
for 6,000G. However, I still feel it is worth the price and moreso if your server offer the ore any higher than that.
You could possibly start mining here in the low teens on the first level, although it is not recommended. There are only four points on the first floor, and they are all spread out which does not make it worth your time to mine at this level.
Around level 18, you can hit the first floor and half of the second with no agro, and make a pretty efficient circuit to all the points. Honestly, I would wait until at least level 20 to start here so you can access a Chocobo to speed up your time used to and from the mine.
Honestly, I think it is best to work this mine with a partner, and you should both be in the low to mid 30s to avoid agro from the top floor. The nodes are fairly far apart, and is quite a pain to circuit solo when you get into a single-double node striking spree. If you and another person can work out two seperate circuits touching most of the points, I think it will be much more profitable than doing it alone.
Bottom Line: Again, I would still consider this a step up from Zeruhn, but it is really dependant on the cost of Platinum Ore on your server. If it is worth at least 5,000G, then I would start mining here around level 20 and make some nice returns on the Platinum and Mythril you gain here.

Drops
-----
Common:
Pebble
Copper Ore
Tin Ore
Uncommon:
Zinc Ore
Iron Ore
Flint Stone
Rare:
Silver Ore
Very Rare:
Darksteel Ore
Gold Ore
Colored Rocks
Suggested Level: 32
Node Layout: Compact
Synopsis: This is a great alternative to the Palborough Mines and at about the same level range. The nodes are much closer together, so it is easy to be more efficient with your time here.
The abundance of close points does come at a price. The top two floors can be very deadly if you are not careful.
I mined here a good bit at 30, and still drew agro on the top two floors by the tier of orcs the Fighter and Cursemaker come in. If you are careful, though, you can still reach most of the points without drawing any attention. If you do, then say a prayer because there are likely multiple orcs around that will also link to you.
Bottom Line: A nice alternative to Palborough but comes at the price of being a little more crowded.
VI. High Level Mining Locations
---Gusgen Mines---
Drops
-----
Common:
Iron Ore
Copper Ore
Uncommon:
Tin Ore
Zinc Ore
Pebble
Rare:
Silver Ore
Very Rare:
Gold Ore
Darksteel Ore
Colored rocks
Suggested Level: 50
Node Layout: Loose
Synopsis: I never really got the feel for this place, but a lot of people really like this place and have made alot of money here. Even at level 50 you should watch out for the bombs on the bottom floor.
Bottom Line: Meh. Some people claim that you can get a lot of Gold Ore here, but I haven't seen a different in any other place. I would suggest going elsewhere at this point.
---Oldton Movalpolos---

Common:
Zinc Ore

Copper Ore
Iron Ore
Tin Ore
Moblin Armor
Moblin Mail
Moblin Helm
Moblin Mask
Rare:
Igneous Rock
Goblin Die
Very Rare:
Mythril Ore
Darksteel Ore
Gold Ore
Platinum Ore
Suggested Level: 60
Node Layout: Loose
Synopsis: This place can be nasty unless you are around level 60. The mobs spawn clustered in areas which make it very dangerous at lower levels. Watch out for Ancient Bombs and Flee really helps out here as well.
Bottom Line: This is the mac-daddy of the standard mines. The moblin parts sell for a good price and relativley fast and the chance of getting three high dollar rare ores is very encouraging.
---Newton Movalpolos---

Bugbears (Sight)
Goblins (Sight)
Moblins (Sight)
Bats (Hearing)
Synopsis: I can honestly say that I have never mined here before. When it first came out, I did not have a job available for sneak mining. Now that there are better places to mine, I haven't turned back for this one. Just for the sake of information, I may mine here for a few weeks to update some stats.
Bottom Line: N/a

Notable Mobs:
Bombs (Sight)
Goblins (Sight)
Bats (Hearing)
Dodomeki (Hearing)
Eotyrannus (Hearing)
Wyvern (Hearing)
Scorpion (Hearing)
Synopsis: The infamous Ifrit's Cauldron. For most, this was the first place for sneak mining. You can find some really nice stuff here if you have the patience. It is a very frustrating place to be if you are the only miner, as the nodes are generally far apart.
Bottom Line: The best way to work this place is with a friend, otherwise you should have better luck elsewhere.

Notable Mobs:
Trolls (Sight)
Magmatic Eruca (Hearing)
Bats (Hearing)
Friar's Lantern (Sight)
Moblins (Sight)
Flan (Sight)
Dahak (Sight)
Synopsis: Halvung is generally not too crowded, and the nodes are spread out just enough that it isn't overly crowded in one area and you don't spend several minutes moving between each one. You have potential to make a lot of cash here if you are careful.
Bottom Line: A nice alternative to Mount Zhayolm, especially when it is overly crowded.

Synopsis: This is home of the very valuable Khroma Ore, but also to a lot of competition. Even though you can make much more money here compared to Halvung, you should determine whether or not it is too crowded to be worthwhile.
If you are Jig Mining, watch out for the puddings as they detect job abilities and will destroy you if you aren’t careful.

VII. Closing
I hope this guide encourages some to try out mining and others that may have some questions about this activity. All of this information was gathered by myself, Meatballsub, on the Diabolos server (excluding some recipe/drop info taken from FFXIclopedia.org). Expect updates in time.
Thanks for reading!
