Edit: MHMU recommends you upgrade to Vana'diel Cookbook v2.0! or the beta of version 3.0

Smiley: moogleHello kupo!Smiley: moogle

The Valefor Culinarian's Guild is proud to announce the first edition of the Vana'diel Cookbook. Due to the delay in implementing Moghancement: Broadband in rent-a-rooms and Nomad Moogle huts, the first edition is designed for download and printing by cooks on the go.

Features in the first edition:

  • 1) Recipes listed alphabetically
  • 2) Commonly known food effects and durations
  • 3) Commonly known guild points and caps

  • 4) Skill caps for recipes

  • 5) Best place(s) to buy ingredients

  • 6) Stackability and rarity of ingredients

  • 7) Typical Valefor weekend prices for ingredients

  • 8) Notation of fast-selling and skill-up recipes

  • 9) Stackability and quantity of results

  • 10) Includes Fishing bait and Beastmaster broths and pet foods

  • 11) Notation of Guild test recipes

  • 12) Notation of conditional availability of ingredients and vendors

  • 13) Recipe index by level including skill-up recipes

  • 14) Recipe index by use type

  • 15) Recipe index by food effect type

  • Planned additions for the next edition:

  • 1) Correction of the inevitable typos and new info

  • 2) HQ1-3 results

  • 3) Addition of HQ pastas

  • 4) Calculation of NQ synths to guild point cap

  • 5) Even more places to buy goods!

  • The Van'adiel Cookbook - Valefor First Edition is available for download at the following:

There are three formats available. Scroll to the bottom and click "Free". A timer will appear at the bottom of the page... when it gets to zero, click the link to download the file. Sorry it's so complicated but my other sites won't support the needed bandwidth.

  • Microsoft Word (953 kb) - you can update it yourself, but you may not have all the fonts.

  • Adobe PDF (812 kb) - should print consistently but you can't change the file itself.

  • Compressed (Zip) Word format (171 kb) - if you want the Word format but want it to download faster.

  • MHMU reminds everyone to always virus-scan downloaded files and only runs macros you know should be there. There are no macros in the Vana'diel Cookbook.

    Happy cooking!

I've deleted the original complaint here about GeoCities bandwidth, and will use this space instead to list corrections.

    =================================
    1. Shallops Tropicale (see below) - cost should be 3085ea. Credit SuicidalWombat.
    2. Stats on Bison Jerky: STR+5, Mnd-1, Att+18% cap 70@368, RngAtt+?, Duration 60 minutes.
    3. Carbonara lists both Black Pepper and Kazham Pepper as ingredients. There is no Kazham Pepper in it. Cost should be 2405ea.
    4. Likewise Nero di Seppia is one of the few pastas that does *not* contain miseraux parsley. Nix the parsley and drop the price to 4540ea.
    5. Pet food eggs messed up. Bird for Alpha, Beta, Gamma; Lizard for Delta, Epsilon, Zeta. Correct prices are Gamma:44ea, Delta:53ea, Epsilon: 361ea.
    6. Missing Recipes: Cursed Beverage, Dried Mugwort (what a horrible thing to do to fresh mugwort!!!), Fish & Chips variant with blindfish instead of 2 tiger cods (not costed), Tomato Soup variant using bay leaves instead of 2-leaf mandra bud (cap 48)
    7. Oh the pastas... Vongole Rosso needs Wild Onion as well. Price goes to 2655ea.

    ^^

Okay, I've moved the files to RapidShare.de and tested downloading each of them successfully. This site supposedly has no bandwidth limitations. Thanks Blado for the suggestion.

    Instructions:

    1. Click the link in the message above. A new browser will launch.

    2. Scroll down and click the Free button. A new page will appear. This page will probably have a timer for a "download ticket". Basically the timer counts down to zero, and when it hits zero a link appears with the file name.

    3. Click the filename link. The file should download.

Wow, nicely done! I certainly appreciate the effort you've put into this! I once planned to create an executable, searchable database using my meagre Java skills, but...

Anyway. I've noticed one error so far. In your area for Shallops Tropicale you have the per-synth costs listed as 1,850 gil. However, your own list indicates Shall Shells run 1,350 each. Considering that you need two of these little buggers, shouldn't the cost be 3200? Or did I overlook something as to your system of listing?

Regardless, thanks for your hard work!

HADES yeah!! Usually when I'm going to attempt to do something I check first to see where each and every little item is coming from (because I refuse to AH ingredients unless they are drops).. WOW thanks - this helps a BUNCH! Not only does it tell you where each ingredient is.. it shows approximate cost, guild points and even stats on each!

    Smiley: yikes Thanks Wombat!

Yep, the second shall shell was missing from the cost. Correct cost is 3085ea. I wanted to do more proofreading but the eyes kinda glaze over after a while. Be extra careful of recipes with multiple ingredients, as I prepared a recipe list, filled in an ingredients list and then manually merged the two *trying* to maintain quantities.

Barring something unforeseen, the next version will be released in June, and this will be fixed in it.

    Happy cooking! ^^

Oh, and thanks for all the rate ups (which do keep adding to karma after 5.0) and kind words. I dream that my co-workers will come around and say "those are the best installation instructions ever written" but until then, this is great job satisfaction Smiley: yippee.

WoW, outstanding job on the cook Book. I have just started cooking and have several guides I have printed up. But I must say the detail that was put into this book is phenomenal. I enjoy the breakdowns under the recipes fro items that can be cooked as well.

From the depths of my being thank you for this Book.

Thanks all for the feedback, I'm glad others find this useful.

Bowie - thanks for bringing this up. One thing that's a little deficient in this version is the explanations of my notation in the Key. I'll explain using vegetable gruel (this applies to some other recipes as well), with the caveat that I haven't made gruel myself.

Some foods can be cooked in more than one way. The interchangeability of lizard and bird eggs in most low- and mid-level pie recipes is a familiar example. In those cases, I have listed the skill cap for each version. You can tell the versions apart by looking at the 1-3 quote marks after some ingredients. Using gruel as an example:

    Skill cap: 26'/28"
Then fire crystals, chamomile, frost turnip, rarab tail and distilled water.

Next san d'orian flour' and beaugreens'

    Then tarutaru rice" and batagreens"

The flour' and beaugreens' are used in the Level 26' recipe; the rice" and batagreens" in the L28" recipe. You'd only use one set of ingredients or the other, not both.

I started to use daggers instead of quotes and never settled on anything very clear. This isn't explained in the Key, so thanks for bringing it. Find anything else let me know ^^.

awesome awesome... got me from 78-82 quicker, as a friendly suggestion... or maybe ill do it.. sort the food by type

    sushi>alphebetical
    meats/eggs>alphabetical
    sweets>alphabetical
    vegetables>alphabetical
    drinks>alphabetical
    breads/rice>alphabetical
    soups>alphabetical

that way you can flip to the drink section and find a drink right away etc. just a thought for ver. 2.0 ^_~

but still an awesome guide nontheless

Disturbed - I actually have the recipe/ingredient mapping in a spreadsheet format right now, so that doing price updates isn't so painful. I've considered posting this, but it is incomplete and I'm on hiatus from the game atm.

If it's something you're very interested in, send me a message (I seem to remember there is some way to do this on Alla) and I'll send you a copy of it. It *does* have macros, so open it without macros and examine them if you are suitably paranoid like me.

After you click the link and see the RapidShare page, scroll to the bottom of the RapidShare page and click Free. This will take you to the download.

Sorry it's a pain, but the site provides lots of free bandwidth for downloading.

Jehebbyo, while I am not on your server, if I can be of any kind of assistance just send me a PM and I will try my best to help you out.

It helps that my summer job is so goddamned boring, 3 hours of real work, 5hours of sittign around and browsing tha intarweb. If it wouldn't be so redundant I'd be writing a cooking guide, but hell, there are half a dozen of em already. Of course I could make the pwettiest one with colors and sparkles and all, ooooh... *_* [/rant]

Could you please host this somewhere else as well? RapidShare completely blocks me from downloading because of my ISP.

If someone were to send it to me, I'd be more than happy to mirror it... Wouldn't be surprised if there were other people being fobbed off by RapidShare.

Well, it was a real classic. I'm kind of hoping someone here has a copy of the cookbook (or even better, the source spreadsheets) and could stick them on a download site again somewhere. Even when outdated it's still useful, as many of the foods popular then and now are still the same (or derivatives, such as the Curry Bun items).
