Shield Skill after Nov 25 UpdateFollow

Well, it looks like it'll be a ton easier to level shield now. Every fight gives the same exp for sword as well as shield. EVEN!!! if you don't use guard a single time in the fight.

I like it, but don't like it at the same time... Anyone try using a shield with CON or THM yet to see if you still get the same shield skill ups?

I'll be testing with CON/THM this weekend. What I meant to do but forgot before I logged out was compare and see if Sword SP is split with shield (ie. you'd get more SP without a shield equipped) or if Sword SP is the same with or without a shield and shield SP just gets added in.

I tried killing iron coblyns without a shield equipped and got the same exp as with a shield.

So then it's a resounding win all around. We can rank up Sentinel without feeling like we're sacrificing sword skill to do it. I hit 15 Sentinel last night but by the time I'm dne pushing CON and THM to 20 my Sentinel rank should be higher than my Gladiator rank...how delicious...

Exactly what I plan to do now too. I was noticing that on 10 CON i was Blocking stuff (12 Sentinel), where as 21 GLA i've only ever Partially Blocked stuff. Having Sentinel closer to Gladiator level should help out tremendously.

ps Whats the abbreviation for Sentinel? SEN?

It's fantastic that sword & shield do not effect each others SP now, but I have to admit I wish a Gladiator would still have to put Guard up at least to earn those SP.

It's just another step taking away a player's uniqueness, like everyone being able to wear the same armor at any level and everyone being able to equip 90% of the abilities regardless of their current job. With the old shield-levelling way it was easy to tell the good Gladiators from the lazy Gladiators, because their Sentinel rank would be lower. Now sword & shield will always be equal and all Sentinel abilities will be available, regardless of the talent of the player.

I am just really confused that my rank 15 lancer can kill blue/green mobs for 140-200 sp and my 23 gla only gets 117 for yellow and orange...

It's the same as it was before the patch in that regard. As soon as you hit rank 20, SP drops off.

I can confirm it's the same for THM and CON :)

Noticed this on my thaum when I had my first few fights after the patch. It's odd because it's one of those things that could be a bug, but it could also just as easily be intentional.

Until we figure out which one is which: SHHHHH! They might take it away from us! ;)

I've been working on my CON and THM sub-classes. CON is now 20. THM is 18 on its way to 20. Sentinel is now 19 (started at 15) and very, very close to 20. Sentinel @ 20 >:D

GLA is still 18 XD

This is great news guys..
The only thing is I feel bad for the level 40+ gladiators out there with level 20 shields. (ive seen a few of them) I'd be kinda pissed if that were the case - but I guess they can level a mage class with a shield to boost it.

There are also a lot of gladiators out there with gimped shield skill because they opted to fight without a shield so that they weren't splitting SP with sword skill. As for the ones who tried to rank up both but watched their shield skill fall behind, that's unfortunate. And the only way to rank it up now is, as you said, to rank up a CON or THM with a shield or keep grinding on their GLA.

Yay, I can finally push my shield above 22 at 35 Glad. I guess I now have a reason to pump THM and CON to 20.

And someone said "good glads from lazy glads"? What the hell are you talking about. I guarantee there is no Glad above rank 30 that has a sentinel rank equal to their level. It would have required hours and hours of standing there getting hit by mobs to keep shield even close to your sword rank.

It is indeed nice that it can actually be leveled up now. Also, there is no cap from what I have seen. I have got 300+ SP per kill in a leve once, in both shield and sword.

Yes, there was good gladiator and lazy gladiator... but it's not that the good gladiatore had the Sentinel the same rank has them, it's more that the lazy one never used Shield to tank because they wanted to lvl there sword skill faster so they could be rank 40 with shield rank 5... And well in a party, a gladiator who dont use Shield is getting hit a lot more then one using shield. It's easy to play without a shield and just spamming attack, but its harder to use shield and try to really tank. ^^

And me to I got 300+ SP per kil in both shield and sword, that's so nice!

I tried hard to rank my Shield skill pre-patch and struggled to get it to 10. In like 5 hours post-patch I was at r14. They might reverse this trend so I'm trying to take it as high as I can before the December patch.

I didn't say that a good Gladiator would have their sword & shield at equal rank. I realize that was pretty much impossible the way they both originally earned SP.

What I said was that their rank would be lower, i.e. if you see a GLA 17/SEN 12 (which is what I was) then you know that they have probably been using their shield as often as they can, as opposed to the GLA 17/SEN 5 that just bought a shield and never bothers to raise it. Now all of the Gladiators will have the same rank & abilities for Sentinel whether they actally use a shield or not.

Its good they did this, I'm glad I only spent a week getting it to 15 prepatch and not 20+ like some. This seems like more of a move to "PLD" type form xi where shield/sword are one in the same, but only time will tell.

I really wish they would make Shield Bash a bit longer of a stun and more accurate, anyway else seem to have trouble landing the STUN application of this or am I just SOL

Shield Bash interupts a spell that is currently being cast by the target and inflicts "Mute" (ie. Silence). Shield Bash does not stun at all, and I have never not seen it proc the Mute if it did hit.

The Mute effect alone can miss, just like the Slowcast effect on Howling Vortex for example.

I'm happy I ranked Shield to 22 before patch...by now I'm already on 28 and I will have it on par somewhere in the mid 40s.

Yep. Shield bash does NOT stun. Does do moderate damage for little TP, though.
