I origionally thought that Gladiators started with a sword and a shield, but that is obviously not the case. So the inevitable question arises... Where can i get a shield? even a starter "weathered" shield or something would at least get me started. Any idea's? I'm in Gridania, btw.

Sadly, the only place I know that has a dealer (Retainers and Players aside) is Uldah currently...

In Ul'dah there is a vendor named Fabrellet in the Ruby Road Exchange, he is the first npc closet to the gates, that sells a good beginner shield if you don't obtain a leve that gives one as a reward.
It is a chestnut shield and cost 34K gil if I remember correctly. I have found a few other vendors but they have higher lvl and more expensive shields, so this is your best bet.

Personally, just get the shield from the leve quest, then invest in a bronze hoppolon from an armor smith. It's around 20k in materials + their price. and it will last you into your twenties.
