I read on one forum or another of a Pug using chain armor >_> who knows if it was a lie or not. But if we are supposed to be viable main tanks or even offtanks I think we need a little more squishlisness than cloth would provide.
But for crafts you can either go Goldsmith (Bone Hora, Turtleshell hora so on), Blacksmith (knuckles and claws), Leatherworking (supports the blacksmith aspect), Alchemist (supports the goldsmith), Weaver/Armorer for armor with their respective supports.
But if you want to look at a large overall picture. Sooner or later you will need three or more crafts if you go it alone, not to mention the harvesting skills (Botany and Mining primarily but Alchemist need fishing materials as well). Then you have your adventuring classes (DoW/M) that you can levelup and cross class (take skills from one class to another).
If you go it alone, you might want to start as a crafter first to get access to facilities to increase your leveling speed along with success rate of crafts.
If you have a few friends or a LS you can pick and choose to be a little less far spread in your skills and focus on DoW/M with sidesteps into DoL and DoH but again, its all personal choice and rather time consuming.
I personally will go either starter Glad/Pug and do Blacksmithing with Leatherworking and Armorer and the DoLs for something to do when friends are offline or no one else to level a DoW/M with. If we get the three character slots I will have a blacksmith main for facility access and use the DoW/M to feed materials to my blacksmith to minimize time spent harvesting with it.
