Petition to Start with a ShieldFollow

#1 Sep 04 2010 at 11:52 PM Rating: Decent
Hello Square-Enix,

I really hope that you start our class with a generic, crappy shield once release goes live. Or at least offer the same NPC shield in all three cities.

Please, spare us all.

Sincerely

I do agree with this. If it weren't for a friend of mine to luckily get a wooden shield from his first Guildleve I would still be trying to play Gladiator without a shield.

Phalanx and blocking in general are so good that I don't know if I agree with this.
When I got my shield was around when I started actually needing it. Any time before and fights would have been a bit too easy in my opinion.

You don't get Phalanx until rank 8, and without the ability to block we seem to spend a lot more time waiting around for HP to regen between fights than other classes. I agree that Phalanx is fun stuff, but compared to the other classes I've tried Gladiator is pretty dull without a shield. Well worth being selective about the leves you do and try to get the wooden shield straight away.

Screw that, just do the first story quest and a few guildleves and you've got the 43k for a tarnished hoplite shield..

And i agree with another poster, shield and phalanx is MAJOR good, so no, you shouldn't.

stop being a lazy bugger and get earning your gil to buy one / craft one!

The only thing I agree with is possibly having a shield available to buy in all three cities. I'm not playing the beta so I might be missing something, but from what I have read it seems that all gladiators are being encouraged to start in only one city in order to be close to the guild and an available shield. Granted I would want to start in the city where my guild is located, but it would be nice if there were at least some incentives to try other cities.

As far as starting out with a shield, I personally like the idea of paying a price starting out before really seeing my class shine. It gives me something to work for.

Ah! But you are assuming that I didn't buy a shield that way already. I have a shield, I just don't think that it's smart to make all new gladiators do this, it's very discouraging!

I think there should be a more GLs that offer shield or a low level one should be available to buy.
43k isn't to bad but they could offer one thats lower rank at 25k-30k which would make sense. Finishing the story quest nets you about that much and you wouldn't start with one.

Just my opinion.

I wouldn't recommend going into retail expecting to be bringing in the same kind of gil from story quests and leves as we're seeing in beta. SE might keep it the same, but it's also extremely common practice to inflate the currency rewards in testing so that your players can test instead of grind for currency.
