why does SE have to make it so impossible to damage deal with a sword. Strait up sword. yes there was a samurai, but thats ffxi, and one very specific class and playstyle. not counting great katana, swords were pretty lame, greatswords too. There was no class specific to greatsword, every job got a natural advantage in a weapon other than greatsword, paladin and bluemage were the only 2 classes that uses 1 handed sword really and paladins are tanks and always mashed potatoes compared to a job like pup or ranger in terms of damage dealing when they try, bluemage relies on spells for dd not the sword; the sword is for TP gain and starting skillchains, but yes it was its "weapon". Dancers using joyuses? wow, they r healers, maybe w/ saber dance? lol no... dance more, while i outparse u every time on like anything but white mage. They use daggers in the mainhand, they just offhand a sword for tp gain. warriors using it? lul. It is still stupid.
There were a few ways to make it vaible, organics, some trail weapons maybe, with some skill+ gear and merits, but its was still always the underdog compared to the natural benefits of every other thing in the game. Like a dark knight or warrior using a great sword... i saw it, but yea, use a sythe, thats why its there, and war w/o a Great axe or axe? usually horrible unless its a god player, which are very rare now, infact, with the new abyessa time constraints stressing out half of the ffxi crowd and a declining economy, its no wonder that is the case.
So i am not surprised they made the one thing that attacted me to ffxiv another underdog. It even says in the description that some gladiators go for an empty offhand, focusing on their sword arm. So i thought, nice, here is a melee class that uses sword, and i dont have to use a sheild if i dont want to. But guess what, theres a main gladiator ability that uses a sheild "phalanx" and there is no help to not using a sheild. Even when not using a sheild, the word is that gladiators are an underdog in the damage dealing department, fighting the basic defensive traits of their class. They dont get to use 2 handed swords, in fact there aren't even 2 handed or "hand-and-a-half" swords in the game at all, which are pretty much the most evolved and used weapons of human history up to the modern firearm. It's false advertising.
I want a class where i can use a 1 handed or 2 handed sword and be a good damage dealer, without having to tank something unless i get hate, or use a sheild. I am surprised more people dont want something like that. It always has to be paired with a sheild, which makes no sense to me. Why cant lancer use a sheild? Take a look at the spartan society, using "phalanx", all lancers using sheilds, and have short swords? Yes we break down classes into games to make the different decisions about weapon choices usually, but its never sword in the lead. Always underdog in Final fantasy. At least let gladiators off hand daggers. Or bring out the fencer, then ill shut up. They are too focused on making their game run and making an npc load in less than 5 minutes at the moment though.
Why cant they just make the option to make my character right or left handed? MMO's (wow and aion included) are so in love with making me mainhand a dagger while i am forced to offhand a sword, instead main hand sword, offhand dagger (it outparses w/ dagger in many MMo classes, or u must dual weild 2 swords, or sword is a "faster, less damaging weapon" but not giving it a bonus over 2 handed swords). If it could just be left handed, it would fix it. Yes, i care about how it looks. Thats half the reason i play these games. It's stupid to limit my options for years. What idiot would have ran into battle with the heavier weapon in his left hand and a dagger or tiny axe in his right if he is right handed? This is why throughout history they have smaller dirk or dagger like weapons in their offhands... because they must focus on weilding the sword, which has superior reach hitting power and tactical slashing and peircing fighting methods. But good god Se, NEVER make this the case, even tho its the obvious mainstream.
