So with this, the Lancer class forum hits 100 posts! The next highest are Maruader (58), followed by Gladiator (48), then Pugilist (46).
Perhaps our lead is because as soon-to-be Lancers, we're innately just a cooler, more social bunch than those classes. Or perhaps it's because of my tireless spamming. Perhaps a little bit of both. But I wonder, is this in any way indicative of the actual populations of classes once the game hits? I'm sure things will change once people get a feel for the way that classes work, of course. But could it be that in the first few weeks of release that Lancers are a dime a dozen?
See, I'm inherently drawn to classes that are less popular. In FFXI, I picked my advanced job (Ranger) because at the time, you couldn't find them anywhere. They were tied for the least populous class on the server back then, largely due to the expense, I'm sure. It's a bit silly, but I suppose being a rare class makes me feel a little more special. I liked that I had hit on a few secrets that helped me be one of the first to display how powerful the class was to others. Of course, you know the rest: RNG became so popular that it was almost requisite, everyone and their mother leveled the class at least a bit, and we inevitably got smacked upside the head with the nerf bat.
It's not going to affect whether I play Lancer in FFXIV, of course, but I have to wonder about how the balance will work out. Early returns from the beta seem to indicate that melee jobs have an easier time than mages right now. Will it once again be impossible to find a caster? Will we be inundated with Lancers, Marauders, Gladiators, and Pugilists? Will groups of all-melee fighters be viable if they all take some curative spells from the mage line?
I'm excited to see how it all works out. There's certainly much more balancing work to be done. One thing is certain, at least: Lancer = win.
