Well I'll get things started. I plan on creating a Gladiator. Because I loved the idea of tanking and being a paladin or white knight, I'll probably start as Thaumaturge until I learn some basic healing spells, then start in on my gladiator.

Who else will be a gladiator, and how will you start things out?

Oh yeah, might as well add that I'll be either Hyur male or a Mithra (sorry, don't remember the new name of them right now).

Hail!!

Anyways, a bit disappointing to know I won't be getting in on the action until March of next year, but such is life. A lot can change between now and then, especially as when the game gets released and we get first hand accounts of all the different jobs. As of right now, Duskwight Elezen Gladiator it is!!!

Similar to you, I'll probably get started with a mage class in order to learn some magic (if that's the way things are going to work). If Gladiator has innate magical abilities, then it's Gladiator from the beginning for me.

All Hail!!

Same here. :( I'm sure by then someone will have written the guide to Gladiators, and if we don't follow the cookie cutter setup we'll be shunned. Another reason I wanted to start at launch. Hopefully after only 6 months people will still be open minded about experimenting different things.

Look on the bright side, at least most, if not all, of the bugs will be worked out by the time you start playing.

I've been tanking in XI since release and will continue the tradition by tanking in XIV at release. :D

Yes indeed. While tanking wasn't my main job in FFXI, I did enjoy what little i did of it prior to going Bst main. Still on the fence, but I'll probably going to go Gladiator until the bst equivalent is released.

I plan on going dedicated glad, and opt on having more threat procuring abilities and mitigation abilities rather than being able to heal myself.

Going roe...whatever (galka), I'm not sure on which home city just yet, probably the one that gives a bonus (if they take that route again).

I'm not interested in making a psuedo-paladin. I want my glad to be a purely physical warrior.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see how possible SE makes that. I like the idea of healing magic not only for party play, but also for solo play/questing. However, if SE makes "resting" more effective than in XI, perhaps magic won't be so crucial.

Hail! I also plan on being a Gladiator, but from the off! A male Hyur from the Midland region (im from the Midlands in England myself so I like the similarities :D :P)

The description given my Enix of a Gladiator, if my memory serves me correctly, is a fighter and defender of others who can adapt to any given and diverse battle situation. Now I have no idea whether or not a Gladiator does / will have an intrinsic ability for magic but in a traditional/ historic point of view, I kinda hope they don't. The idea of an out for out fighter appeals to me greatly. Heroic figures such as Achilles, Hector of Troy, Leonidas of Sparta, Alexander the Great, and even Medieval Knights of the Crusades all come to mind. A type of fighter who relied on his ability as a fighter, and knowledge of battle to become heroic and epic.

Either a swords-master with the use of 2 short blades (duel-wield), a battler with the use of a large 2 handed sword, or a protector with a blade and shield, all should be available to master. Gladiator (by its very definition) should be the class that specialises and dominates in battle, with no magical elements at all. Perhaps the 'magical' ability to rouse others into battle and increase morale seems appropriate.

Thats what I would love for the Gladiator class to be anyway :D

Gladiators will be loved dearly for their awesome tanking, tho I have a feeling most will not want to play them much...or as such. Thank god in this MMO that won't too much of a problem! I think I'll be playing as a Gladiator after leveling Marauder a bit.

Hrmm... I wonder if Gladiators could pump out decent damage with a bit of Cross-Classing..

I think you will always need skills from different jobs so I highly doubt that once you get to higher levels you can do certain parties without for example some healing or other skills that help you tank.

In ffxi your heals did give you more threat and i think in ffxiv that will also be the case.
From what i've seen in screenshots you also have mp even if you don't have any spells/skills that require mp so even for that it is wise to have some sort of cure that uses mp since you can use it in emergencies.

There are also non-MP healing abilities, like Pugilist's "Second Wind" skill. I have that equipped on my gladiator and it works fairly well. However, it's got a (if I recall) 3 minute timer, so it is not the best for reliable tanking cures. I plan on leveling conjurer up a bit to add cure to my gladiator's abilities soon and recording the results. :)

The one thing about it, however, is that MP does not regen. So that could be a problem for gladiators trying to rely on cure to boost hate.

It would be cool as @#%^ if there was a White Knight job class instead of calling it Paladin. It'd give it more of a shiny armor/flowing cape/epic feel to it hahahaha

and really in tanking terms what does threat actually mean?

It didn't. "Threat" is a WoW term. FFXI & FFXIV both call it enmity.
