Oceanic (Australia/NZ) players going to JP servers?Follow

I don't understand why this is happening. Is the *potentially* better ping the only reason?

From here in New Zealand, my ping to Montreal is 280-320ms, to JP is 350ms+. I guess this may differ to other Oceanic players.

jp.square-enix.com / 202.67.53.202

Reasons I don't think JP servers are a good idea for English speaking players:
1) Unless you can somhow score pings below 100ms from Aussie/NZ, it would not make much difference over all. Slightly laggy compared to slightly laggier won't change much in the gameplay. Besides, the main issue will be lag spikes, especially during peak hours. And being in JP servers we will be in their peak hour, so I am expecting huge lag spikes.

2) Members in a linkshell (or is it called Free Company in FFXIV? I didn't play 1.0) will come and go over time due to real life commitments, conflicts etc. In a JP server, it would be hard to get new members as the older ones leave or quit.

3) In my experience in FF XI, JP players generally don't like to mingle or do stuff with non-JP players, probably because of language barriers. For the preciously few in my large LS that are JP with decent English, their primary LS would always be a JP one. So if you were going to do some group activity or crafting help but your LS members are either busy or simply not interested, you would be unlikely to get a pickup party for help.

4) An important attraction of a large MMO is to be able to mingle with friends and strangers alike. In JP servers, the chances of mingling with them are low.

5) Some are worried about time zone difference to the US players for group activities. I don't think it will make a difference in a JP server. Unless you speak fluent Japanese, you are still going to be limited to your friends when you play. Besides, most players will have whole days free in the weekends to play with US players.

Feel free to disagree with me, but I'd like to know why you think a JP server might be better!

I'd prefer to go to an English speaking server as well. Sometimes when I don't feel like doing anything I like to just sit back and keep an eye on all the /shouts in FFXI, see if there's any activities or quests happening that I need, or just watch all the /shout dramas happening with some popcorn.

Can anyone tell me which new servers (NA or JP) that NZers or Australians are heading for?

Same - always had problems in XI with low English-speaking pops for ANZ primetime - poor choice of servers (plus as my first MMO I wasn't sure what I was getting into!). An official or informal choice for "us" would be v.handy

You might want to check http://oceania.guildwork.com/
Apparently the community over there will go to JP server Tonberry primarily due to latency concern to NA servers.

If you get 70% oceanic/sea into a JP server, you get to have people speaking in English more than JP.

Another reason is that when we play in our Prime Time there will be so LESS NA people playing is like entirely no use to be in NA server than JP server where there higher % to get in PARTY using AUTO TRANSLATOR.

The duty finder will get around a lot of the concerns around trying to find parties as well but the translation stuff is good enough as is. I played in plenty of JP parties on the weekend without any issues.

My experience from FF11 was that JP people didn't mind playing with English speaking non-NA players. The SEA/Oceanic population is large enough that it doesn't matter much which server we end up on as long as it's the same few.

Server voting on Oceania forums was mainly for JP servers http://oceania.guildwork.com/:
JP Legacy - Masamune
JP New - Tonberry
NA Legacy - Sargatanas
NA New - Behemoth

Our free company primarily comprised of AU/NZ folks went on the route of NA server and recruit based on our play times. Behemoth has a big contingency of Oceanic players already and none of us have issues recruiting for our play times.
