So, a big mod called The Aether has been released that basically takes the concept of the Nether and inverts it. We get a bunch of floating islands, several new enemies, three types of dungeons, rare items, accessories, rings, pendants, and mounts that fly.

I have NEVER used a mod before, so setting up the Aether was a chore... but totally worth it. My portal gated right into a bronze dungeon... which had like 5 more immediately nearby. I've done almost all of them, hauling out a ton of Zanite Swords, Flaming Swords, and Phoenix Bows. I hope to find a silver soon, but I die waaaay too much for my tastes (even on easy). The poison Moas especially take me out quite well. I haven't fallen off the islands yet, but I figure it's just a matter of time Smiley: lol

Anyway, I highly recommend it. IMO, this is what Notch should have been working on for the past few months. There's also a handy video in the forum post for newbies like me to install the mod.

Looks a lot like "skylands" mod that's on a lot of servers. The only difference is skylands is fail by comparison.

So, a few more thoughts after a couple hours of playing last night:

-Diamond tools (pickaxe especially) is useful. Iron is not so much. Leather armor gets shredded almost instantly, so I'd say iron is your best bet for armor at first.

-Zanite is pretty... crappy, truth be told. It gets better as it loses durability, but that also means you'll lose it soon. Blah.

-Poisoned moas can go DIAF.

-I'm not sure if it's lag, but I feel like my attack range is smaller than usual. Especially the sentry block enemies, I feel like I need to let them practically hug me before I can hit them. Also, the Valkyrie Lance is supposed to have a longer range, but I can't seem to aim it at all. I still need to get into sword melee range to actually hit an enemy.

-The Phoenix Bow was really fun at first... and then I realized it not only sets enemies on fire, but also the block they're standing on. Almost lost a tree house firing at a creeper. I assume the fire sword does the same, which makes it worthless, as you'd just walk into the flames. I look forward to using the lightning darts.

-Go into boss fights with a lot of healing and the appropriate items (at least a diamond pickaxe or 2-3 Zanite pickaxes for bronze, a sword for silver, and a bucket of water for gold). I've only fought the bronze boss so far, but it can get the best of you if you mess up.

-I really REALLY need a flying mount. This world is hard enough to get around without all the enemies. I've been killed by poison, thrown off a cliff by a zephyr, and thrown way up into the air by some golden slime (and then died from fall damage). Apparently one of the complete sets (Gravite) gets you immunity from fall damage. Can. Not. Wait.

This mod is WAY too much fun Smiley: lol

If you want to watch someone explain it while they play I recommend watching the Yogcast. Fair warning the latter videos do spoil the dungeons a bit.

Played a little more this weekend...

1. After spending probably 12 hours total in the Aether, I have seen...
-Two Moa (blue). I accidentally killed them before realizing they drop eggs like chickens and need to be kept alive >_>
-NO Aechor plants. Not a single one.
-Six phygs, one of which I tamed.
-One golden dungeon, which I've held off on completing.
-Seven bronze dungeons, all on the same floating island (my portal brought me directly into one)
-Zero silver dungeons.
-Two blocks of gravitite. So, freaking, rare.

2. Flying is SO MUCH BETTER. Having a phyg was awesome.

3. Phygs die by getting hit from a zephyr's snowball. UGH! When they're rare as ****, this sucks. I've spent 3 hours trying to find more. No luck.

4. I had a blast (literally) by mining with bed explosions. Like in the Nether, beds explode when used, creating a blast approximately as big as 3 TNT. Helps clear out some areas!

There's a patch coming soon which will change a bunch of things. 3 new creatures (1 hostile 2 friendly), a new block, better spawn rates for the rare things, despawn rates for aerwhales, lower rates for zephyrs, and 6 new dungeon rewards. Only bad thing is that beds will no longer explode (but at least I get a new spawn location). It should have been released Sunday, so I'm hoping it'll be out soon.

Well, it's been almost 2 weeks, and still no update to the Nether. Rumor is that the update will be out tonight... but we'll see Smiley: tongue

After clearing the 5 bronze and one golden dungeon near my spawn location, I decided to search for new areas on my Phyg. I found another messed up amalgamation of bronze dungeons, this one even worse than the original. I -think- there are about 6 or so, but they intersect everywhere and in weird ways. One boss is literally sitting over the open-topped tunnel of another dungeon; not sure how I'll kill him Smiley: lol I also found two silver dungeons, at long last... and then my Phyg died. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, without any idea which direction my spawn point rests in, I've opted to just sit out and wait for the update to appear.

I've been waiting for a while!

The update is finally out, if anyone else was looking forward to it as much as me (unlikely, but hey!). Main changes I've found (check the notes on the main topic if you want them all):

-Ambrosium was drastically nerfed. Before it was like... 4 hearts each, and stacked to 64? Making it easy to spam in boss fights. As a *slight* compromise, they introduced a new recipe for healing stones (stick a holy stone in the enchanter, voila, stacked healing stones). This uses more ambrosium (to fuel the enchanter), and I think only heals for 2.5 hearts. Still useful but not as much.

-FINALLY mob spawn rates were fixed. Moa and aechor plants actually show up now (previously, in several hours of playing, I only found a single blue moa). This let me finally raise and fly some Moa... and I like Phygs better. Breaks down like this:

Moa Phyg
Jumps 2 blocks Jumps around 6 blocks (maybe 8)
Can jump in air 2-8 times Cannot jump in air unless you run off a ledge
Stays still when dismounted Wanders around
Doesn't despawn Can despawn (I think)

So pretty evenly balanced overall. I definitely prefer the Phyg to blue moa, but I have some black moa being raised right now, and we'll see how it goes.

-New enemies and creatures! There's a whirlwind "mob" which I don't know if you can hurt... it spins and throws you. And now there are rabbits and flying cows! Rabbits drop string, and cows leather, meaning you can always make a saddle in the Aether. The cows can also be ridden, but I haven't done it yet. Rabbits are kinda fun: if you right-click them you pick them up and can slow-fall by pressing the jump button while in the air.

I also learned some other good tips, like the value of Skyroot weapons. While they are weak and break quickly, you get twice the drops. Previously I was using a hatchet for skyroot logs, but then I realized... you can also get double drops from enemies! Golden swets drop 6 glowstone now, flying cows drop 4 leather, aechor plants give two aechor... I feel like an idiot for not realizing this before. Also, the pickaxes are great for ambrosium mining, as you get double the amount. Unfortunately they can't mine Zanite, but oh well.

I also HATE valkyries. I find the silver dungeons tougher than the gold so far. Probably just takes practice, but I die to the normal ones like 50% of the time. Not cool.

Still, I'm loving the update, and it looks like more goodies are to come (a freezer-type block was added, with promises of huge expansions of its use later; right now it just makes ice from water or obsidian from lava).
