I just created my own server with Craft Bukkit. I've spent the last 12 hours going through and setting up plugins in order to create the most fun server imaginable. This is what I have planned so far:
Game play Plugins
McMMO: This plugin allows players to build stats to gain strength and special abilities.
Factions: This allows for player controlled anti-grief. Factions are basically guilds, you have leaders and sub-leaders and invite people and talk on a private channel. Faction leaders can claim plots of land up to an extent depending on how many they have in their faction, which is usually about 10 plots of 16x16 blocks per person. It's best for people who really trust each other to establish a home base together, but also works as a way for individuals to protect their private property as well should they choose to go solo.
Magic Spells: This basically gives players the ability to use magic abilities like shooting fireballs and creating expanding rings of fire or enabling the ability to breath under water or strike enemies with lighting and other really nifty things.
CraftBook: Allows the construction of really cool things you can't build otherwise.
World mechanics
I plan to have the entire world divided into two great nations, with a rather large "ocean" between them. The ocean will be dotted with islands that hold various things (think Windwaker.) Some islands will have zone protected Zelda-ish dungeons (players cannot build or destroy blocks on them) that tunnel deep underground and contain treasure, usually powerful spellbooks.
I expect factions of the same nation to ally with each other, and conduct raids on the other nation's main city state. I plan to create one large major city for each nation, but players will still be allowed to create their own structures elsewhere.
I plan to have a central spawn area where players will first log in, where they can decide which nation to belong to and teleport there.
* I plan to have admin staged PvE events. I'm thinking I can spawn monster invasions on the main cities where players must protect a relic of some sort (Think Besieged if you play FFXI) with some penalty if the relic is lost. Admins will have their own fortress within the Nether that players can invade to get the relic back if it's stolen, all in good spirit. Admins could server as raid bosses of sorts, using certain mods that allow them to sustain massive amounts of damage but are still mortal.
I am hoping to have an admin lead each nation in a bi-partisan kind of way, staging PvP events and stuff.
Obviously, I will need help building all of this. If anyone is interested please let me know. I'm also open to any ideas and comments.
