My cousin got it for me, I started making a series of caves underground.
I've got the bottom 12 layers done so far. I'm fairly paranoid about monsters spawning inside now that I have a large basin, so candles are going up all over the place. I have about 13ish more layers to go to reach the mid section. I know at one point I had more than 3,000 dirt blocks in storage, and building about 5 layers took nearly half of those. I estimate the outershell is going to take a total of about 20,000 dirt blocks.

You should fill the bottom with lava. It will take care of any monsters and keep you on your toes.

Lately I've been gathering mass amounts of resources, then carrying them back to labeled boxes in my house. Its sort of like an RTS... or Simant... or a guild bank of sorts. It's good to be able to invent some reason to play though, and not just be able to type some code and pull whatever I want out of my ass.
I intend to make stockpiles of weapons and armor (and other things) for anyone who need it. Later I intend to map out all the known land and begin exploring new areas.

Something really strange happened to my house... I large portion of my wall has disappeared. It could not have been a fire, because much of the wall was brick and cobblestone. A fire would have spread all over and burned everything, but this looks like a perfectly even chunk was simply removed all at once.
There's also snow outside. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Kuwoobie, the server I am on had a similar issue. A tunnel my friends built to their mine just all of the sudden cuts off. It's a perfectly flat cut. I assume it's a server glitch; not sure what causes it.

Gosh darnit. So my friends have decided they want to start over again, since they got a lot of stuff from before there were monsters on multiplayer servers. This means I will be abandoning my sphere, though I'll probably work on a new one on the new server. It's also going to be even more painful with fixing the repair glitch in multiplayer. I go through a diamond shovel in about 10 minutes, so without the repair glitch it's going to be fairly painful to mine dirt for the sphere.
I'm fairly annoyed, but I'll get over it.

Have them send you the current copy of the world folder, this way you can keep working on it in singleplayer or your own multiplayer server.

Now that I've got a computer again I picked this up. I played for an hour just gathering materials to build a small base to store stuff and work out of. I hopped up on a hill to look around and a damn creeper got me. Goodbye to all my stuff.
Edit: ...and again. There was a crowd the of the bastards outside of my mine so I dug my way out to the other side and one got me from behind.

I have some extra armor in my house if you need some. It helps a great deal against monsters, especially creepers. A full suit of iron armor makes you almost invulnerable to their explosions I have found. Also, online, the armor doesn't wear down normally. If it ever does, just throw it and pick it back up.

I made my first attempt at pixel art just now in the space between my house and the Tower of Stuff. It's not as good as it would look with colored blocks but it's not bad.
I just finished building a pretty decent roller coaster mine cart contraption. It runs from the roof of my house, down into a mountain and out the other side into "Bat Country" and into a crater a creeper made revealing a massive quarry beneath the earth. The ride ends by circling the quarry and plunging the user into a hole in the bottom of the map.
You can avoid dying by dismounting your mine cart and typing /home or /spawn. It won't work if you're still riding the mine cart though I have found...

I planted torches down there so zombies and skeletons would stop spawning on the track, but there are still a few dark spots.

Last night Shanon decided it would be a good idea to burn a tree outside our house. I told her never to do that, but she "didn't think it would jump that far." The result was all the trees in that forest were burned down, along with our house. (and Mario's hand.)
Fortunately my house isn't as wooden as it looks, and the fire set free the large pool of water on the roof of my house, causing it to pour out everywhere. I was expecting a lot worse, but the two of us got the house put back together almost exactly how it was before.

Is it at all possible to get colored blocks and sponges and the like on our server? I've been thinking about doing more (better) pixel art but there aren't enough colors.
Notch hasn't officially added color blocks back in, but I can make you some sponges I think. If you want to do it just for a screen shot you can probably use a custom texture pack.

I just made another pixel art sprite along the road near my house. It's a bit more complex than the Mario, and a lot bigger.

I finally broke down and bought the game last night. After an all nighter that felt like a couple hours I think I am starting to get the hang of it. Still suck massively at it :l (especially when the RNG gods frown at me and stick me on an island surrounded by several more islands that are deserts). Anybody have some tips that would have been nice to know if you knew it near the beginning?

I plunged my tower down all the way to bedrock. It's nearly complete, just need to finish some glass work. Now the tower goes from Bedrock to sky limit.
I hope you don't mind Kuwoobie, but I opened the side of my tower when I was at bedrock, and created a small tunnel to your current project work area. I thought it would be nice once your area is completely cleared out. You can close off the tunnel if you wish.

It appears that a hole straight through the bottom of the world has spawned on the bridge in front of my old castle. I was exploring the older areas and noticed my bridge was partially gone, I thought it was a Creeper attack, but the hole went straight through to oblivion.

I've noticed those popping up a lot lately, I often find several in my transport tunnel. They usually go away if you log out, and back in. They also sometimes dissappear if you warp somewhere and come back.
Ramping a minecart over them is pretty exhilarating, though.
It seems that minecart "boosting" is now broken (or fixed, if you so see it). As a cart passes another, it just pushes the cart forward out of the way rather than boosting both up to speed. Kind of disappointing really. (This is tested in SMP only, I haven't tried it in single player).
The voids appear to be just unspawned sections of the map. Jumping into them causes you to get "stuck" falling/reappearing at the top. You just sort of bounce. So your client sees the ground not there, the server says it still is... and the two conflict.
It's weird, now when I set my draw distance to max, I see walls with random things ontop of them repeated over and over on the horizon, and then they move back as I walk forward. First it was what appeared to be a cube of snow/cloth (white block) ontop of a grass hill that repeated itself all over the horizon. Then after respawning it was a tree ontop of a grass hill that repeated itself over and over.

Greetings and salutations :) I was sent a free version of Minecraft, or free trial version, not sure. Ive enjoyed playing and have learned much, however, being the reigning queen of my own world is getting a trifle...mmm..dull. I would so love to play on a server with some more inhabitants than pigs (they hate me) cows (scared of me) and some chicken-duck thingee :) Not sure what I need to do, but please??? multiplayer server..please??? I'm thinking about coming up with sort of a PvP scenario arena type place.
I could build two fortresses across a very large area of land, with various towers and checkpoints. It could work a lot like Alterac Valley for those of you who are familiar with WoW PvP.
I could make small buildings for the purpose of being destroyed or defended by either side, and certain strongpoints that would need to be held, maybe even a capture the "flag" type game.
I have a lot of ideas that derive from outdoor paintball games. I think what I'll do is find a place to start building and come up with ideas from there.

The Minecraft update is coming on Thursday. There’s even a user story about that on the kanban board (anything that doesn’t get added before that won’t make it into the release).

- New water mob are squids. They drop ink sacs.
-Flowers can be broken down into petals, which are turned into dyes.
-There are new tree graphics, ones with white and black bark, and apparently darker trees (hearsay, I haven't seen them yet). Word is they don't drop anything new.
-Skeletons drop bones, which are turned into bonemeal for dyes
-It seems one of the new blocks is a blue ore. Not sure what it's used for yet, or where to find it.
-Baa baa... black sheep! They drop black wool.
-Durability of some items seems changed. Early reports say that wooden items last 60 uses instead of 33.
-Trees seem to generate in new shapes, leaf-wise.
-Early reports say spiders can climb. Be very afraid!

I already knew they could climb, I had to burn down a forest just to get one and a zombie that were hiding in the branches.

New trees are birch trees. Silly Notch and his (mostly) European trees!
Music blocks make sound depending on the block beneath them. Some sounds are piano, others are bass, others are drums or percussion.
Squids live outside of water but can't move. They spawn on peaceful but will attack if you hurt them.
Chickens have nests.
Reeds are now sugarcane. They make sugar, used for cake. Cake needs to be placed first, but then can be eaten, and can be used multiple times.
Underground, light won't travel as far the further down you go.
You can dye sheep, hahaha!

Nah, up until now the only way that could happen is if a tree spawned with the mobs above it, trapping them inside, or if you had a ladder (they can climb ladders, just not well). Now spiders will literally climb up the side of your house and wait for you to leave to pounce on you! Eeek!

Bonemeal used on seeds or saplings cause their targets to instantly mature. Farming just got a whole lot easier if you have a skeleton spawner!

But does it set the target on fire?
Nope. Eggs and snowballs are thrown like what happens when you push Q, arrows are shot like from a bow, but the others just drop like when you use Q.
I don't hack, so I'm not sure what would happen using a water, lava, or fire block.
