So, there's this game the guys from Penny-Arcade are experimenting with. I checked it out, and it looks like fun. The graphics are cheesy and the concept is simple, much to be expecting from a "sandbox" game.

Basically it is an open world environment where you can manipulate the objects and land therein. Seems to me like an experiment of an idea that could be utilized in future games, particularly MMOs. I wonder what a game like WoW or EQ or FFXI would be like if you could build your own fortress any way you want on any certain plots of land. I imagine they could set aside large areas connected to existing ones for such things. It would also be nice to see destructible terrain and buildings. You'd think by now shooting a wall with a tank's cannon or the like in Grand Theft Auto would do some sort of structural damage.

Edit:

After playing the game and reading this guide, I've learned there is much more to the game than this. I never imagined something so simple could be so fun. I'd stay up all night playing if I didn't have a job interview tomorrow.

This looks like a lot of fun!

Edit: Alas... http://www.minecraft.net/

Minecraft

This is a temporary page.

Minecraft got way too popular for this humble server. I've had to disable everything fancy to even get it to run. It went down on Saturday, September 18.
It will probably go back to normal on Tuesday, September 21. I hope.

If your launcher is giving you download errors, please update the launcher by downloading the latest version from this page.

The following things do not work at the moment:
Registering an account
Purchasing the game
User verification for online servers
Sounds and music for new players

The following does work:
Actually playing the game
Player skins

On the plus side, seems like it's temporarily free!

I've been playing a pretty ridiculous amount of this game considering how simple it is. For being in alpha still, it's remarkably glitch-free - I've only run into one issue, and only after the latest patch. You will pretty much need to have a page open to the Minecraft wiki the whole time so you can look up crafting recipes, though, because there's no in-game framework for that yet. It also is constantly using something like 40-50% of my CPU despite being a fairly simple Java application. Still, there's something really addicting about it, especially if you've got friends who you can show off your new, hand-crafted world to.

I think we should get together an online server somehow. I'll need to look into it. It'd be fun to have the world populated with people playing online and such. I'm beginning to feel like Tom Hank's character in that movie where he talks to the volley ball.

I just recently dug a very deep tunnel and found myself in a vast underground cavern where I could find no footing in total darkness... well, I ended up falling down a rapid waterfall and right into the arms of one (possibly more) of those annoying exploding guys who killed me instantly. I lost all my stuff -____-

That guide was fantastic. The first thing I plan on doing when I get home is getting this game. It's crazy to think that this is the ALPHA! And... can you imagine it with other players as well? There is SO much potential here!

Period. You actually are pre-ordering the finished product, and in the process you get access to this, the alpha version. I believe it was actually 9 euros, so your mileage will vary.

Well it was free last night, so I downloaded it and tried it out.

Wow. I did really get lost. I kept making temporary bases. One of the first ones I built was just a hole in the wall as night fell. And that was interesting, as I didn't have any coal to make torches :-P So I started tunneling a bit and saw some night sky... and then I died. When I respawned and went back, my former shelter was a crater. Seems a creeper got me. On the plus side, got my stuff back!

My next shelter turned into an excavating project. Down, down, down I went. I managed to get a little iron, which was good enough to mine a bit of red stone I found at the bottom, but found no gold. I broke into a cavern with a waterfall that went nowhere, and eventually got to bedrock without finding anything good. Oh well! Maybe I should find a natural mine next?

So I did, with some skeletons in it (easily dispatched by my sword). The natural mine, unfortunately, had nothing good in it. Looks like I'd have to do some more exploring!

Over the next few hours I built two new bases; one a floating house in the sky (died 4 times falling off while trying to place the floor) and the other a walled fortress island (which was a good idea, as a few zombies and a spider tried to attack me that night. Found a TON of redstone mining in the island, but no more iron or gold, so I decided to call it a night at like 1 am (ouch...).

This morning it's back to pay-to=play, and I think I'll be investing in it! It was a lot of fun, and will be better with sound, I think.

Ok, even though this looks like it's made by someone that's just starting game design school, going underground is creepy as @#%^. I bought the game and have invested now a total of 10 hours. I'm usually not inclined to games such as this but it's held my attention a bit (at least while my current interest in FFXI wanes and I wait for Dead Rising 2). I'm having a very difficult time finding anything better than iron (no gold, redstone, obsidian, diamond etc).

Any tips for dispatching the undead bow shooters? Those guys are vicious and it's rather obnoxious losing 2/3 of your life in like 3 shots before you even find them to aim out. And yes, I found the crafting guide but flint doesn't exactly grow on trees.

You have to go pretty far underground for things like that. And I don't believe obsidian occurs naturally, but occurs when water hits lava in a certain way, which you'll have to cause yourself.

I usually just turn the difficulty down to Peaceful because I don't like dealing with enemies. For those guys, though, it's possible to dodge in and out of their shots and stab them in between. Or you can just kite them in a circle for a while until the sun comes up and they burn to death. Supposedly nothing will spawn within a certain radius of torchlight, so I just cover the outside of my base with torches in every 5th square or so, and then I only have to worry when I leave the base to cut wood or something.

Yeah I turned the difficulty down as well. The only thing that irks me is that The island I moved to from spawn point has a HUGE built in cave system. It's really nice but I have now died twice somehow getting stuck building a minecart path and I can't find where I died (as in I ended up in a solid space and bled to death and when I went back and dug all around, nothing).

Once I get this mine system completely fleshed out and lit up, I will turn the difficulty back up.

I am pretty **** addicted to this game now. I cant believe how much fun I am having, even though all I am building is a glorified cave. On the plus side, I have removed an entire hill from the map. That made me feel manly.
Would be great to get a multiplayer server.

That would suck, but I'd imagine it's on a server with no mobs.

Some people, like myself, were lucky enough to download it during it's free week. Currently it's not free, but someday it will be open source supposedly. I imagine it will eventually be some "app" on Facebook or something seeing how it can run off a browser.

After reading that guide and some reviews, I decided to spend the $13 on it (but luckily I had $5 in my paypal account, so it was really only $8!). Should I just start on Paskil's server, or do something on my own first?

Paskils server doesnt seem to save any data, at least it didnt save the giant's beanstalk I made. I reccomend starting a single player game. And watch this guys videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bh4EexJO4I they are amusing and teach you a surprising amount. Also get used to referring to Minepedia for information on crafting recipes.

Ive just had to start a new game out of annoyance. I fell in some lava, died and lost all my items. Including the Obsidian I had just mined with my shiny Diamond Pickaxe. But at least my new world isnt full of snow. Snow looks cool, but gets annoying really fast.

After 2 days in game, I still haven't actually built anything. I mostly went around collecting materials, and also took a bit to figure out how to properly craft stuff with the workbench... but I'm having fun and can't wait to build some stuff after I get some work done :D.

Anyway, it would be fun if that server could be like a permanent world we could all interact in and have our stuff save.

Yeah I just seem to build a crude fort, then spend my entire time delving into the depths of the world. Although today I thought "Hmmm I wonder if I can build a bridge between the top of those two mountains" Turns out I can. My next project is going to be moving house to the top of one of those mountains, then I am going to make a truly epic bridge across a huge distance to the next mountain.

So far they can't... but it still scares the **** out of me every time I hear an arrow come flying at me when I pass the opening in my base. (I leave a single block open so that enemies can't get through but I can tell when it's daylight outside)

Also, supposedly I should be able to change my spawn location by hitting Enter, but this doesn't seem to work. Is this feature not in the game any more?

I want to load my single player map up for online play and found something on the forums to do so. The only problem is when I unpacked the download, it saved it as an application. I can't seem to find my save files. The online map I had loaded was kind of dumb. If anyone wants to post an online survival map, that would be great, or their single player map.

Ok, I got my server launched. Took me forever to figure out but open minecraft app and type in 71.90.98.24

Careful, this is my single player map and monsters are up. Difficulty on easy. Watch yourself if you're in at night. Depending where you spawn, follow the tower torch thingies with eternal wood burning across to the water to my 'castle'

My first base is near where you spawn and there's a forge/workshop to build a boat. There's some wood in the chest.

Get a bit of sand into your furnace and make some glass for the window, solves that problem. But if you build a door he can shoot through the window in your door.

You can only change your spawn point in MineCraft Classic Creative mode. If you have bought and downloaded the Alpha then I am afraid you cant change your spawn point. Better hope your world has something useful near the spawn point.

Update on my progress. I was going to continue building my impenetrable hilltop fortress of doom. But I got distracted and now my fortress is sitting on top of a man made volcano with water and lava pouring out of holes all over it. Looks awesome.

Ive joined Paskil's map. Weird invincibility bugs going on, but I have started my own base to the left of Paskils giant castle. I have made a lovely wood and glass house next to the lake. Look for a giant T sticking out of the ground left of Paskils Castle and thats where my base is.

Sitting waiting for daylight now for the invincible zombies to **** off.

Hmmm, I changed it to Peaceful before leaving, I thought that would stop the spawns. Regardless, you might want to dig at the least an earthen moat since you said you were having issues with the creepers.

71.90.98.24 is the multiplayer IP once again.

Yeah monsters have stopped spawning now. Im not sure if its because I changed my own difficulty to peaceful as well?

I was reading on the forums that its just a bug on multiplayer that it is impossible to deal damage or take damage, quite annoying. Especially when I came out my mine to discover 12 animals had spawned inside my house. Had to break open a door and shoo them all out, then replace my grass flooring with rocks to prevent them spawning.

The mobs in this game are just freaky. The noises they make, for one, are creepy as ****. Furthermore, even though you can kill the spiders with relative ease using a stone sword, it's still a frightening experience to try to kill one out in the open.

Also, those little explody guys freak me the **** out more than anything. I had one pop out of a cave I was about to explore and back me into a corner and murder me, and it took me 30 minutes to find my base again from the spawn point (I have since laid a path of torches from the spawn area to my base). Then, one morning after a particularly harrowing night where an archer was shooting arrows at me through my viewing hole, I wandered out of my base only to find one of the ******* sitting there waiting for me. I killed him, and promptly got blown halfway across my field of view by another one that snuck up from behind. Thankfully I had been at full health (got dropped to 3 hearts)...

I think I'm going to move my base soon. I've dug fairly far down and cannot seem to find anything but stone. :(

I haven't found the explody guys yet, thank god. And why don't the spiders despawn? I think I spent three "days" in my little cave because I could hear something outside the wall, and I was afraid to open a hole and look outside. I finally got up the courage and peeked outside to bright sunlight and a spider that was (thankfully) facing away from me and to the left of my hidey hole. I ran away as fast as I could.

I like the "path of torches idea." If you're in the light of a torch, do things stay away from you?

I don't understand why I'm so fascinated by this game...

Haha, it is strangely fun despite how simple it is. As far as the torches go, my understanding is that mobs will not spawn in areas lit by a torch but they can still enter them.

I finally managed to do something and I'm working on some nice cave nearby the glass house on Paskil's server. Sorry for the house by the way, some exploding thingie had fun surprising me there...

Yeah, so I joined Paskil's world, only to find out I can't break down any wood or even dirt? -.-

Multiplayer is still extremely buggy. I've found that typically, moving to another area of the world will allow you to destroy things again. Sometimes you'll see dirt or stone regenerate two or three times before finally being destroyed, though I've mostly experienced that when using TNT.

Since we're all getting into playing online has anyone figured out how to change your character skin yet? I see them posted on their forum but I can't see any way to transfer them to the game.

(That thread is epic win by the way.)

I logged into Paskil's server. I'm beginning work on a monstrous tower near the home point, but I need lots of cobblestone. My mine is hidden away in the side of a mountain, enclosed by two doors.

Changing Skins is fairly easy too.
Log into Minecraft, and then visit this page.http://skins.tkte.ch/
Select a skin from the list, and then click the arrow facing up. Restart Minecraft and you'll have that skin.
