Champion does very well if you can get nice 2-hand weapons. Early on, it's the only Soul with a gap closer (though one not usable in combat til level 11, but that won't be much of an issue).
I got a lucky drop of a warhammer with approx 3x the strength of the quest one I had at level 12, went Champ, and kicked ass.
Recently (at level 38-40) I switched back to Champ from Paragon because I got a Darkmetal Battle Axe (I think that's the name, Weaponsmithing crafted darkmetal 2h Axe) with a skill 300 strength augment crafted in. It still works very, very well, though I sometimes miss the movement of my riftstalker build (Between Riftwalk(?name?), Planar Blades, and Bull Rush I nearly always had a way to close the gap, but lacked against melee). Riftwalk and Planar Blades aren't available until later on (level 21, but only really effective at 27 or 28 when you have the improvement and and planar blades).
This is what I use for levelling PvP: rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=0c_ku..VVRzqRMMhzz.Vxx0hVboM
Spend points up to the cap in Champion until level 32, then flesh out Paragon. AFAIK Weapon Spec and Teaching of the Five Rings stack, so you're running with almost +100% damage with that. If you find out that I'm wrong, I'd drop Weapon Specialization even though you lose a little more damage (you need 30 points to cap out the bonus from the talent), simply because Paragon doesn't have much in the way of attractive alternatives to TotFR to progress. (You'd basically be stuck taking Duality of Mind)
I skipped the Bloodthirst talent because I can never seem to land a Killing Blow I always get em down and then the resident Marksman (never been in a WF without one) throws out a Deadeye Shot or some other finisher and gets the KB. Edited, Aug 23rd 2011 10:20pm by emallson
