I've played support classes in several other games before, but based off the podcasts I've seen, Rift uses global cooldowns. Sounds like it could be tough for a support class to do anything besides buff... Thoughts? I really have no experience with GCD games.

Most MMOs have global cooldowns, they're just really small. WoW has like a .5 or 1 sec global cooldown, for example. I don't know how large the gcd will be in this game though...hopefully it's not that large.

WoW has a 1.5 second GCD, this game is a 1.0 or a 1.5 too

also let it be noted: most buffs are off the GCD

Speaking from a Bard's PoV, they have several passive buffs which will almost always be on, and several that have a 15 second duration (30 or more seconds with talents). Basically it seems you'll be dealing damage (and healing) with Cadence, and refreshing the buffs every 30ish seconds so they never fall off. It's not a precise timing, but you don't want your buffs to fall off, for sure.
