I've never played the original Witcher but I have Witcher 2 sitting in my Steam queue and wondering if it was worth playing the first before the second? Any first hand experience?

I've literally only played a bit but what I THINK I remember people saying is that, like any trilogy scenario, playing the first will enhance the latter two. But the 2nd is apparently structured so that you can play it without prior knowledge, and its combat systems are more intuitive and the controls are more reactive.

I've played some of the first one, but it fell victim to my Steam queue.

I don't care for the first one's controls, and it doesn't feel like it has aged very well. You might want to try it out, but if you don't like it don't hesitate to dive into the second title.

If you do install the Full Combat Rebalance mod, be aware that it breaks the tutorial in TW2, since it changes the parry/riposte mechanic. I like the FCR combat, but you won't be able to complete the tutorial with it installed.

There's bound to be a Let's Play on Youtube, so that's an option.

Here's the main story of the first game edited down to a "movie mode":

What they said. Don't let playing the first game stop you from checking out the second if you end up disliking the first game. I hated 1 at first until I got the camera and controls figured out. But after sticking with it for a bit it was definitely a cool game.

No where near as polished and epic as 2 though.

You can get the first one for dirt cheap, too. It goes on sale all the time. So.

I faced the same dilemma when I picked up TW2 back in... winter 2012? Perhaps that long ago. I was given the same advice - the first game is good for the story, but shows its age.

I also ended up reading some of the novels (which I believe were originally in Polish). The short stories I read were... interesting... but not fantastic. Very "story-of-the-week" format with revelations about Geralt's past being alluded to bit by bit.

TW2 was a game I never got far into, unfortunately. I died in the freaking tutorial. Now that I've had experience with Dark Souls I feel like going back to TW2 would be a refreshing change of pace! Probably my next game of choice after finishing Dishonored and its DLC.

Edit to clarify the game in the first paragraph.

Seeing as how I pre-purchased the third one, I suppose I should actually play the previous two.

Okay, thanks everyone for the feedback. I found the original for $5 on G2A so I picked it up and will give it a try. If I don't like it I'll just move on to the second one.

You don't need to play one to play two. The story in two doesn't depend on the story in one very much and the game does a good job bringing you up to speed. I didn't particularly care for the control scheme in the first game, so I didn't finish it. Two, though is an amazing game that I would recommend to anyone that's into action RPGs.
