comes out today for 3DS. Will be picking up a copy on the way home from work. For those that don't know, it's set in the same universe as the old SNES Link to the Past, and features similar style and many familiar locations. The main mechanic for this game is the ability for Link to become two-dimensional and stick to walls. Below is a recent video showing gameplay and some reviews.

From what I can tell, the 2D thing is more like a fun aside (think the Kotaku review was commenting on it).

The BIGGEST change is that now your items come from a store, and you rent them (or purchase them, for more rupees), making the game more open-world than before.

Oh right, I had forgotten about that. But yea, their big thing with this game is there are multiple ways to solve puzzles, so you can get the items in just about any order you want, and also don't have to overuse the 2D Link gimmick I guess.

Also worth noting that Kotaku has a tips for playing guide up today.

Completely unsurprising is their opinion that renting sucks and you should farm rupees to buy the item.

I never expected to do anything else, to be honest. I thought renting sounded terrible from the moment it was announced - why would I want to run back to the shop to give an item back?

Mine's in the mail, along with the Zelda 3DS XL. The normal 3DS is just too small.

When I first heard about the item renting/buying I wasn't a fan. But watching Giant Bomb's quick look this morning they brought up a good point. When you went and got an item from a dungeon, you pretty much knew the gimmick for the next dungeon. By being able to grab the items at will, it adds more of an exploration element to the dungeons.

And now they really need to add A Link to the Past to the virtual 3DS.

Looks great other than the fact its on a handheld. It didn't used to bother me but anymore I can't stand to spend any amount of time playing a game on a tiny screen.

Im just getting old :/

Haha, how is that a "quick look"? Still a good video though, and was awesome to see that there is streetpassing!

I bought it on the eshop, played a bit today... really enjoyed the old school feel. Then I got frustrated by a puzzle in the first dungeon and decided to smack things in an mmo instead.

I got mine from Gamestop anyway. They had a deal where if you pre-ordered it you also got a free download of Oracle of Seasons.

I got mine from Shopko! I was more amazed that they ordered current titles, than I would have been about people rushing there to buy it.

I'm only a few hours in but I'm really liking it so far. The item system is neat, giving you access to so many things so early. You don't need everything right away, but it's fun to just play around with all the toys. I also love how the "become a painting" thing actually feels like an interesting game mechanic rather than just a pointless gimmick (so far anyway.)

Side note, is it just me or does money just rain down from the sky in this game? Rupees in large quantities seem to be f'n everywhere. I just entered the second dungeon, and even after renting all the items and buying the bottle and flippers and stuff I still have like 1800 rupees. Seems insane.

^ I thought that about the money too, first that there wasd no limit to how much you can carry was a shock to me. However, once you get the Master Sword, if you go visit the shop again he is now selling the weapons as well, and they are all about 800 rupees to buy (your first weapon he will sell you at half off, so its 400, except the Ice Rod which should be 600).

Yeah, but you still have tons and tons of money. When I first heard about this system in the preview stuff I was expecting that I'd slowly buy the items over the course of the game. I was not expecting to buy out almost the entire shop as soon as the buy option became available.

So this buy option.. when does it open up? I'm in Lurule (yea? (sp)) going after my 2nd Sage. Do I need to return items? I rented everything and have not had to return to re-rent stuff (no deaths, yet).
For being "open" world, it dos seem limited in actual choices. Or I need to go look at a guide and see where I get access to a few more tools >.> but nah.

It should already be open then. Just go back to the store and you'll get the option to buy the items outright. The baby octopus sidequest lets you upgrade items for every 10 babies you rescue. You can only upgrade items you own though. No upgrading rentals.

If you're already at the second sage you probably have enough rupees to buy most of the items.

I'll check it out. I'm pushing something like 4k. How I use to treasure the rupees in older games Zelda games lol. Heck I even paid almost 1k for a golden bee from some dude and his line was something like "really? I could have sold you anything, you should be more careful with your rupees..." (before I knew it was a bee). I kind of laughed an less then an hour later had made it all back from exploring Smiley: laugh

Here are some tips, will spoil them. Will make the game a tad easier early on...

1)When you have to gain the soothing stone for the Zora Queen, it can be bought back in town from the dealer who sit on the carpet. The thief that ran out of the Zora zone, right before you go in, can be found in town. When you get near him, he runs off. Approach him from the East and before seeing him, merge into the wall. Pop out behind him, he freaks out and says he is sorry. He gives you the Pegasus Boots. This comes in handy to get the little snail babies, the race game, and rupee dash.

2) IMO, the 1st Larule dungeon you should do is the one found in the other world town, the Thief's Dungeon. Doing it 1st will let you gain access to: 1 chunk of metal for Sword upgrade, and when complete you will free the Sage who has the Sand Wand. You will want this asap..for:

3) After doing #2, make the Dungeon in the desert area your soon to next goal. Soon because: if you do not know, collecting snail babies (need 10 each time) allows you to upgrade a weapon you own. So after you rent, then buy, the Sand Wand, go an get an upgrade from the Mother snail. Upgrading the Sand Wand will make the Desert Dungeon 100% times easier (sand pillars basically last until you cast again). Doing Desert Dungeon lets you gain: Titan gloves. You can now lift the bigger stones.

4) In Larule near what would be Sanctuary, there is a mini dungeon that's main reward is another chunk of metal. Go upgrade sword :D

-Totally buy weapons asap, and then update them as you can (I'd do something like: Sand Wand, Bombs, Bow, Boomerang (lets you throw 3 out, great if you use Stun > Attack method to kill stuff).

-In my above post I talk about a golden bee, giving this to the Bee guy (who by the way gives you a net, and thus you can catch Fairies to put in a bottle) will give you a Bee Badge. It turns bees into friends. When a bee spawns it will assist in attacking whatever is on screen for a while.

-Snail babies stuck on walls pop off when you merge with the wall and then pop out while behind them. This method is also used to fight the boss in the Lost Wood's Dungeon (Lorule side). For some reason I've never liked the "dark" dungeons, so I knocked this one out fast.

yay! Game has been really fun so far. Been trying to 100% my 1st play through, my next will be to see how fast I can do it. So far, no Game Over deaths yet :D
