My new cell phone is the first electronic product I've ever bought the little warranty that they're always pimping out.

Ditto on that. A year ago, actually.

At the same time, I'm really careful with my devices. This June I got the first scratch on my phone's screen protector. I'm still using the first one, and it's still clear, and it has been on since last August...

I've had phones and game systems survive warzones, man. But a four year old? They're doomed. Doooooooomed.

My niece pulled a good seven+ keys off of my parents' laptop. I shuddered when I saw it.

And from that moment on, I was careful to never have it anywhere even remotely in reach of her ever again...

If I ever have kids, they'll have cellphones, but they'll be Nokia bricks, and they'll like it. They can play Snake.
How well do those do against falling in toilets? Because Kyocera makes one that's waterproof up to a certain depth(a couple feet, iirc).

Re; Broken DS's.

My brother (39) has had his DS hinges break 2 times and had a modder swap cases for him twice! So yeah. Common problem if there's modders that will fix the problem for a price.

As for me, I just got a 3DS not too long ago. Very happy with that, I think the 2DS is ugly and even harder to carry than the 3DS, so I'll keep it..not to mention I'm catching up on old DS games I missed by being broke since it plays both (Don't laugh. I'm pausing due to having to save for Christmas which is a big deal, but I own 2 3DS games and 1 DS game now (I won't count Personal Trainer Walking as a game))

Couldn't tell you about the 3DS but I never met a school-age kid with a DS that had its hinges intact. A solid body sounds attractive to me.

My experience is the opposite. I've only ever seen one break once, and it still worked afterward even with the broken hinge. IMO you're more likely to break a screen than the hinge. Nintendo hardware is rock solid.

Oh, the broken hinge ones I've seen worked. They just had to be carefully opened so the top wouldn't flop off (hanging on by the ribbon cable) and you couldn't open them 3/4s or anything. Either it was closed or flipped 180 degrees. Like I said, putting it into a 3rd party case helped hold it together since the case had its own hinges.

We'll have to differ on our definitions of "rock solid" although, again, I'm just giving anecdote. I'm not basing this off service records or anything.

My assessment comes from seeing systems hit pavement, get chewed on by dogs, dropped in toilets, etc, and keep going with nothing more than a few scratches on the casing.

I'm mostly worried about the naming issue. Because, if the Wii U has proved anything, it's that marketing to a primarily casual, non-gamer population with really confusing naming conventions is really, really not going to work well.

Yeah. Also, I am not sure this will sell. I don't know, recently I was hanging out with a 5 year old and they really wanted to be able to play my 3DS but they were so used to touch screens they kept trying to touch the top screen and they could not deal with the buttons at all (they play games on a phone with no problem at all)

They had heard of mario and really wanted to be able to play a mario game but it just confused the heck out of him.

Anyway, I just feel like parents are going to be looking for something that can play angry birds this Christmas season.

Also on the whole rock solid thing, my girlfriend broke my fat DS (that I got as part of a 30 dollar box of semi working, hideously engraved gameboys) when she stretched her arm out to embrace me once... which is to say... yeah ok "rock solid"

Honestly, I just wish this was a 3DS that looked like a 3DS and cut costs by cutting out the awful 3D.

I don't need to look like I'm playing with a LeapFrog tablet...

With the price cut in the Vita, Nintendo finally has some competition in the mobile department. I feel like they released a new console to appeal to the target demographic they didn't need to worry about, when they could have released the same concept in the normal flip design to really challenge the Vita's price drop.

People judging you for playing Super Pokemon Kart on the bus are going to do so whether you're playing on a LeapFrog or a 3DS. No one's ever said "Look at that dork playing kiddie video gam--- oh, wait.. he has a super mature PS Vita. Never mind then!" Smiley: laugh

According to Sankaku the 2DS is a single screen and weighs more than a 3DS.

I actually plan to buy one. I'm a budget minded individual with kids who felt Nintendo was overplaying their gimmicks I didn't want.

Honestly though, my wife and I need a platform to play Pokemon X/Y on and the idea of giving myself a headache with "3D" put me off enough to never want to get a 3DS. I don't care how ugly it is. Who actually takes their portable handhelds out in public anyway?

I don't care how ugly it is, but the orientation of the buttons and the lack of ability to tilt the top screen from the bottom make it a no-go for me.

You can turn the 3D off. I pretty much never use it.

I've been totally hoodwinked. I was led to believe that the main purpose of the handheld was so you play games away from home without having to drag your console/tv/controllers out in public with you.

Why else would they make it so small?

Why wouldn't you? I pull out my 3DS on trains, in cafes, etc all the time. Playing anywhere is the entire point of a handheld system.

Standing in line trying to get into a venue at a music festival? Great time to play. Sitting on a bus? Great time to play. Having a quick lunch break at work? Great time to play. This is the whole point of portable gaming systems.

I don't know. Typically when I go somewhere I do not find myself idle long enough to have time to play games with. I suppose I could buy a 2DS and go hang out at the laundry mat for an evening and hope I'm not in anyone's way.

Pretty much this.
