I just checked my email, and it seems that I've been chosen for this round of beta testing. It's too bad about the stupid hours though, I'll barely get to play it at all. I hear that there is going to be an open beta next month though, so maybe I'll get a chance to play it a bit then.

http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxiv/download/en/FFXIV_2.0_BETA_Roadmap_EN.pdf

Two more Phase 3 tests (This weekend, and I assume next weekend).
A short downtime for them to do their thing.
Phase 4 = Open Beta.

Barring any major issues, Phase 4 characters will remain after game launch.

Edit:
Seems you can download the update now to get ready for tomorrow. (or, at least an update, not sure if another will happen between now and 2am PDT)

Oh, hey, I'm in the beta. Interesting.

I was just coming here to ask if anyone had tried the Summoner job yet when I noticed.

Don't know how much I'll be on this weekend. But I hope I'll at least get to experience it.

Or maybe not, since this beta key isn't working to actually register.

[EDIT]

WHY MUST THIS PROCESS BE SO CONFUSING?

WHY MUST SQUARE ENIX HAVE 6000 ACCOUNT TYPES?

WHY?

[EDIT2]

Oh, of course it's case sensitive. Why wouldn't it be? It's not like it's all in the same case or anything.Smiley: mad

They have:

FFXI Playonline account
SE Account (FFXIV and your Playonline account linked)
SE Account Global (store and other stuff)

Worst part about it is the two different SE Accounts are for the same website name, just different portions of it, so I can never truly remember which one I should be using.

I've been futzing around on Gladiator. Just hit level 8. I have to admit that I'm having fun with the way the quests are presented. The dialog boxes feel like a classic RPG, and actually make me more likely to read the quest text. I don't know that I'd ever want to level multiple characters, but it's been pretty neat so far.

Controller support is pretty decent. I've been playing on PS3 without a keyboard at all. Of course, this basically eliminates any social aspects since typing with just a controller is painfully slow, but it's been good. My main issue is that they either don't explain or I missed the initial tooltips telling you controller shortcuts. Like, for the map it tells you to open it from the main menu. I accidentally discovered after a couple hours that the square button opens the map. By far the most annoying thing has been a couple quests where you have to /emote at some NPCs. I don't know if there's a shortcut to the emote list, but having to pick it from the menu every time on a controller (since it would take even longer to type it with no keyboard) is a pain. Of course, after finishing that one, I found that you can put the specific emote on your hotbar, so I suppose if I ever come across another one like that, I'll have to do that.

Most of the enemies are straightforward, where you don't have to move out of the way of anything. A couple have some AoE **** that's clearly marked, and you can move out of the way of it. I can forsee issues in the future when there are more movement-dependent enemies, working with the controller. So far, I've been using the D-Pad binds for situational abilities, since they remove my thumb from the movement stick.

Maybe I'll download it on PC for next weekend, and see how I like it with KB/M.

Yeah, I had to just google it and find a support thread with the link. They really need to merge those accounts into one. I get that it's a huge corporation, but it's also 2013.

Meh, anyway. I'm guessing it'll be 3-4 hours until this is downloaded, assuming my net doesn't drop out.

I'll probably work on Arcanist first. I loved Carbuncle in FFXI. Smiley: grin

Some questions:
-Are races/stat distinctions as important in FFXIV as they were in FFXI? I know that gear could bridge the gap, and that for the most part distinctions weren't TOO extreme, but you could definitely feel it when trying to play an Elvaan/Galka Blm or a Tarutaru Mnk. I'm not asking because I intend to min/max or anything. I played a Taru in FFXI. I'm just curious.

-Does the Discipline system still work by equipping weapons? And, if so, what do I need to play as an Arcanist? Is it the Grimoire? Can I start out with one, or is it more of the "onion knight" type start?

-Damn now I want to play FFT. Moving on.

-Do Dragoons get a wyvern? If I whine enough will they get a wyvern? I want my frickin' wyvern.

-If I understand it correctly, Disciplines are the "general" options, with jobs being the specialized ones. So only disciplines can use the sub system, right (equipping skills or whatever)? No more blm/whm, smn/whm, X/brd, etc.? I can't tell if I'll miss that or not...

Haha, whoops. Forgot to log out on my PS3, came to work and decided to download the client on my laptop. Account immediately suspended until I reset my password. I should get a new token I guess, since I deactivated mine long ago. I thought it would just boot me from the PS3 client and download on here no problem. Smiley: lol

For the Emote shortcut, pressing the right bumper on the 360 (R1 on PS3) swaps your shortcut pallets. Pallet number 8 is defaulted to almost all the menu shortcuts, including the Emote list. You still have to select the individual emote from the list, but all the menus can be put on short cuts (including hunting/crafting/gathering logs, inventory, character sheet, etc).

As far as the race/stat differences, I haven't compared them too closely, but I did notice that each race had two subraces (where are you from type thing) that changed the stats. I chose the human race for now, as a Thaumaturge, and selected the subclass that increased int/mnd. I seem to be doing pretty well.

Classes are unlocked once you reach level 10 (and do the level 10 class quest, I believe) and you join other 'guilds'. Once you join the other guild you can swap weapons to that class type and change your class that way. Gathering/Crafting are separate classes (similar to original)

Lancers (dragoons) do not have a Wyvern as far as I know. Never seen one floating around.

Last night I played through the story some more. Completed the three dungeons. They were fun. 4 man groups, wasn't too hard finding them. As a Thaumaturge with only the Conjurer's Cure ability unlocked, I was able to play the healing role pretty well.

First dungeon went smoothly. Two Lancers, One Marauder, and me the Thaumaturge. I think this was the Limsa one. Pretty easy.

Second dungeon went really well, we all died once. This was one Marauder and Three Thaumaturges. Gridania one, If I remember right.

Third one was a bit harder. The one outside Ul'dah. Lancer, Thaumaturge, Conjurer, Marauder. We wiped on the final boss, and half of us died during two mini boss battles. First mini battle only the Marauder and I were left, and I did nothing but spam Cure on him (and ice on the enemy to boost my MP Regen) while he attacked. Second mini battle only me and the Conjurer were left and we kited the enemy around waiting to trigger specific area events that were key to winning the battle.

Wiping is relatively penalty free. Mini boss areas are locked 15 seconds after you engage the battle, so anyone that dies and respawns is locked out of rejoining the battle until either the battle is won, or everyone wipes. If everyone wipes and respawns, the battle is reset and the area unlocks again. There are many little off shoot paths that contain Treasure Coffers. Coffers contain either currency and consumables that are randomly distributed amongst party members, or equipment that is distributed on a Need/Greed/Pass lotto system. You can only roll Need on equipment that your current class can equip. Equipment can be really good too, running the dungeons multiple times (helping out people still on the story quest) is actually rewarding for people who have already done it.

I like the FATE events (yeah, yeah ATM machine, PIN number, etc.) popping up. It reminds me of GW2. It's cool now, when lots of people are running around, since usually everyone is doing their own thing, and it's kind of an organic way to bring people together.

Thanks for the info.

I made the mistake of opening the manual. Now my screen is just black with a cursor on it. Let's hope it's still downloading, and that the picture comes back.

I just unlocked the ability to create Materia... unfortunately to actually put Materia into equipment yourself, you need a crafting (not cooking) class at level 19 or higher.

I don't know that I'll touch the crafting stuff in the beta. It's never been terribly important to me in a game, unless it's something I'm required to do, in which case I just hope it's as painless as possible. Smiley: lol

Can someone send me a link to where you download the PC client? I never got an actual email from them, just a PSN message.

The game looks promising, but I don't know if I'll like the controller style in the long run. We'll see. Graphically it's far better than anything my current PC can push out.

[EDIT]

Actually, thinking about it, I have no clue if that's true. I know the old version REALLY taxed my PC, but I also know they expanded the graphical range to include lower-power PCs... Downloading the benchpress now.

I'm on Shiva, just because it was the top of the list for EU/NA back when I first got into the Beta.

Also, what do you mean too early? You posted that at 2pm EST.

It wasn't listed as Legacy only when I created my characters... hmm. (Cause I'm not legacy).

Edit:
It appears that "Legacy Servers" are just servers that allow your 1.0 characters to be transferred to them. New players can play on Legacy servers, and Legacy players can put new characters on any server they want. It's just that if you wanted your 1.0 character in ARR, they have to be on Legacy servers.
