Yeah, I enjoyed the Highbridge circuit. I ended up with a group of people just roaming across the zone. It was pretty fun.

I also understand that in North Shroud, left of Fallgourd Float there are some quickly repeating FATEs that are supposed to be good.

I'm off to watch Despicable Me 2 with the folks (mom invited me and my brother out today) so I won't get to reach Paladin quite yet.

Paladin isn't in Phase 3, unless you are a Legacy player with it already unlocked.

Okay, shout out for something that no one has mentioned, but EVERY MMO developer from here on out needs to take note of...

Helms. And Hair. And helm and hair combos that don't clip, don't just turn your character bald, and actually show the appropriate hair protruding from appropriate places. And appropriate places only.

Right on, SE. Right on.

Yeah, no reason to do so now. Unless the helmet is ridiculous of course.

But if you find a cool helm, now you get to have your cake and eat it too.

Ok, question.

I've been using my 360 controller on my PC and playing using that layout. So far it's worked out just fine. But before the end of this phase I want to try out the keyboard controls.

How do I, or can I even, set it up to be close to FFXI's controls? Numberpad 4, 6, 8, 2, to move my character, arrow pad to move the camera, etc. Right now it looks like WASD is the movement and arrow pad is the camera. I don't much care for that (main reason why I plugged in my controller after first moving to the PC).

Edit:
I see I can manually change pretty much every control... but man that'd suck going through all that right now just to have it deleted in less than 36 hours...

Man... it'd be nice to be able to have a preprogrammed default to select similar to FFXI. Tab targeting, Enter to target nearest NPC, etc. I think I'll probably just end up going back to controller. If I can't easily go Keyboard Only controls, it's probably not worth it.

The level 30ish set you get from the Manor and whatnot seems to be fully dyable (some of the other sets it doesn't seem like you can dye). It might just be that set, but dyed.

I didn't even think of KB only. One of the hardest parts about trying to go back to FFXI for me was trying to get used to that, after playing a bunch of MMOs with KB/M.

I had almost completely forgotten about the standard Mouse/KB setup, and just automatically placed both my hands on the Keyboard FFXI style when I first powered the game up on the PC.

Now that I remember standard Mouse/KB MMO controls, things are a lot better. Somewhat embarrassing...

Still want Tab targeting though...

Edit:
Basically, if they are going to make me use the mouse, I want to be able to have everything controlled by my left hand on the keyboard. I don't want to use the right hand side of my keyboard. FFXI's keyboard system replaced the mouse with the Number and Arrow Pad, fingers moving, thumb camera control.

Seems that there is only enemy target cycling, no NPC or PC targeting cycling. Just shortcuts for nearest NPC, Party members 1-8, etc. That involves a lot more keys than a few quick presses of one button to move between party members or NPCs that happen to be around you.

Edit2:
I'm searching and searching... On the controller I could press the Confirm button and it would target the nearest anything (Interaction point, NPC, PC, Enemy, etc). I cannot find a button in the configuration to do that general target. (yes... mouse click, but that's not really the same).

I think the job system is kind of neat, after mulling it over a bit. There was a long post that I linked earlier that explained it quite well. Obviously it is incomplete at the moment, but the idea of jobs being more like specializations than new classes is a good way of thinking about it, I think. Once classes have the option of more than one job (as with Arcanist), it should make a bit more sense to the people who are having trouble with it.

At first I was kind of disappointed that unlocking PLD did not mean I got to start fresh with a new job at level 1 and learn my skills gradually as I leveled up. I really do enjoy the leveling process. However, you do still get that experience because that's what the first 30 levels of GLA are. It's also good that since the job is kind of a specialization, your base class levels up. There aren't separate levels for GLA and PLD.

Reading more about it, you get special job abilities, but it limits the abilities you can pick from other classes. Instead of a subclass ability slot every five levels, you get one every ten, and are limited in choice to the two classes that make up your job (in PLD case, GLA and CNJ). Of course, since you can still pick from your primary subclass's abilities, that'll mean I'll have to level my CNJ up more than just the initial unlock level. It's kind of a neat way to get players to level multiple classes/jobs. Since I have to level CNJ in order to unlock more abilities for my PLD, I'll end up unlocking WHM on it.

Oh, scratch that. I thought WHM would be CNJ and some other class, not GLA. Smiley: lol I thought it would daisychain your subclasses so you end up wanting to level basically everything. I could effectively level GLA and CNJ and have full access to PLD and WHM without needing other classes.

Ultimately, I don't like it, but I can begrudgingly accept it.

What IS a big issue, IMO, is the severe growing pains we're going to see going into this.

I get that it's a system that was meant to be expanded. And I get that you can only do so much at launch. And I get that specializations can be added easily over time, since they're just an addendum to a class.

But seriously. Right now Gladiators are using every bladed weapon in the game. But there's literally no reason they should be using Daggers, and plenty of reason to have a dagger-using class. So, what? They can use daggers up until SE adds Thief (which they'd better do).

Btw, I'm pretty sure that Whm uses the Arcanist as its support. Same with Blm. I figure they were using Glad/Pug in earlier builds (if jobs were ever available) because Arcanist wasn't in the game yet.

I don't know, I'm worried about how to grow the system with the least amount of stress on players. And it's hard to see a system that won't be really bumpy for a while.

They definitely need to make getting a second spec for each class a top priority. But they also can't rush into that, because it'll leave NEW classes in an odd limbo. Added to a game where they won't act as support for anything.

The game really needs another class added to Limsa. I'd personally make it Thief (or whatever a knife-fighter would be called). Because adding a melee, dex-based class would help round out the spec options for the rest of the classes. Glad, sub Daggers, for Ninja. Archer, sub Daggers, for Ranger. Monk, sub Daggers, for Dancer. Etc.

Well, I like the idea of it, once it's fleshed out with more jobs. It blows that basically, everything except Arcanist only has one job, one specialization right now.

I imagine that GLA will get a DD job at some point. The job selection screen says something about some GLA not using a shield, to focus on damage. I guess they could get THF, since they use daggers already. MRD (or whatever the abbreviation is) should get DRK, since they have 2-handed weapons already. Archer will get RNG. I don't know which of CNJ and THM will get RDM, and I don't know what the other class will get. I don't know what Lancer and Pugilist will get.

GLA: PLD, THF (THF could make use of GLA threat abilities to transfer hate, a la SATA)
MRD: WAR, DRK
LNC: DRG, ??? (SAM, maybe?)
PUG: MNK, ??? (NIN, maybe?)
ACH: BRD, RNG (COR instead?)
ARC: SMN, SCH
CNJ: WHM, ??? (RDM, maybe?)
THM: BLM, ??? (BLU, I wish...)

Now, with the pirate themed city/race, I've got to think COR is coming at some point. Maybe there won't be a RNG, and will be COR in its stead. Really, they probably should have dropped BRD and just put COR .

I don't know, just spitballing here.

I abhor the idea of Thief being added as a Glad specialization.

Right now, there's a serious issue with itemization. Strength is the primary stat for Gladiators, Marauders, Lancers, and Pugilists. Intelligence is the primary stat for Thaumaturges, and Conjurers focus on either Intelligence or Mind (with the ability to switch their core stat). Archer is literally the only class that wants Dexterity. Arcanists and Summoners will likely want Int, with Scholars wanting Mnd (and I'd be shocked if they didn't gain access to the stat swapping ability of Conjurers). With the exception of PLD, all other stats remain the same. In all likelihood, Brd will continue to just be Dex.

Vitality and Piety (HP and MP) are wanted relative to each classes' needs.

So, right now, we have a ton of strength options, a large number of Int/Mnd options (Int is the dominate stat, but there's plenty of demand for cloth Mnd and Mnd accessories), and a pitiful need for Dex items. That's going to be a huge point of weakness for crafting and gameplay. Dex items will be in less demand, and will likely be less common drops.

We desperately need an increased demand for Dexterity, which will realistically mean creating melee dex users.

Just adding some Dex jobs wouldn't do that. For one, it creates stress by requiring an entirely new gear set of Thieves, with an entirely different stat basis. Think about WoW Druid before the stat equalization - that sucked. Having a different gear set to optimize a different job is fine, but having your current gear set be horrible for the other job isn't.

And you'd need to create a BUNCH of Dex jobs to counter that demand issue. And that's a LOT of work right off the bat. Because they'd need to go in and change far, FAR more abilities to work with new jobs, rather than just creating a new class they can expand off of.

Honestly, I think it would be really destructive for the game.

Yeah, I guess I can see that. TBH, I hadn't looked at stats for all the classes. I think PUG could be switched over to DEX-based, and maybe base THF off of that. Maybe switch LNC as well. Give PUG access to MNK and THF, and give LNC the DRG and SAM jobs. The biggest issue I see with these is that both job options would be DPS jobs. I think it's somewhat important to have two different roles filled by two job options.

I think we'll probably see some distinctions between DPS + Support and DPS + Utility in terms of specializations. Dragoon is pretty much straight-up damage. But the only other existing FF Job that uses spears I can think of is Templar, from Tactics Advance (R2?). That was actually a magic class with some decent melee ability.

Right now, Lancer has some okay support. Decrease piercing resistance (obviously good for them, and I imagine archers, plus some Gladiator abilities and maybe some monk weapons). Slow is a great debuff, and they have a stun (two as dragoon). I can see them going Templar, with /conj, and adding 5 support skills. They'd still do solid damage, a la lancer, but would definitely have a place in a group. Pugilist is harder. We have Master Monk (which is really what Monk is here), White Monk (add support and some holy damage attacks, like Chi Blast). You could do Dancer, though I think that's historically been Daggers? If we're including ANYTHING that has used fist weapons, we also have Puppetmaster and Animist. Maybe some others.

Still, I see the same idea as what they've done with Bard. Archer is still definitely a DD job. But Bard adds some really nice support, without reducing their damage.

I will as well. The sheer amount of time I've spent in character creators over the years...

I'll probably end up creating one of each race/sub-race. I'm still really torn on what I want to be.

I'm debating between the Lalafell, the Miqo'te, and the Hyur.

I think I'm going to go Lalafell. Mostly because I intend, right now, to main an Arcanist. I like the size combination of Carbuncle and their small stature. I also like the way Conjurer is working with the Lalafell. The size of the boulders is great with their small size. But I don't want to make the decision based on a level 1 spell...

I REALLY wish the intro wasn't so goddamn long. It makes getting out to check out the animations annoying.

I want to go with full disclosure here. I've spent dozens of hours with the WoW Model Viewer, trying out different looks.

The nice thing is that the stat disparity at start is the exact same stat disparity you'll have at cap. By the time you hit 50, a 5 point variance is going to be absolutely nothing. So it really is a scenario of going with what you want. Your start might be more difficult, but it's not like that's all that meaningful. Sure, you felt it in FFXI (first levels of a Taru Blm went WAY faster than Galka). But with the sizable regen OOC in FFXIV, it really doesn't matter.
