That's logical.

Hell, my brother-in-law works for Microsoft. When we bought my son a console, we asked him about a discount and he said he could maybe get 10% off retail because the hardware margins are so tight that there's little room for savings. On the plus side, he got me Win 7 Professional ed (retail) for $30.

We wound up getting the kid a PS3. Because his friends had one.

My young cousins, who had no gaming consoles and were not video game players in general, were able to perfectly articulate how and why they wanted the 3DS to their technologically oblivious parents. /shrug

Seems fairly common, to be honest. All they're likely to know anything about are the games, at the end of the day. Which helps even the playing field. But Sony's announcements are generally far more relevant to young players than the 360's were. KH3, Pikmin, FF (depending on their age), that weird one with the floating shapes that turn into people (or whatever that was).

And if they're moms that worry about "violence" in video games, the XBone certainly isn't going to help sell itself. With KH alone, Sony has a lot of ability to flood children's channels (like, IDK, Disney) with ads. Commence begging.

The only thing I'm seeing in the XBone lineup that's "kid-friendly" is their music game. Sports games, too, but those are harder to advertise to that target demographic.

Not likely unless they have some deal with microsoft. There's very little money to made in retail from consoles. At least I couldn't get jack sh*t of a discount on consoles when I worked there back in the day.

I meant more generally for the departments. I suppose they're trying to push $70 HDMI cables on me for a reason.

Yes they are because there is a huge markup on all accessories. There was no commission but the dept supervisors and store managers were pressured pretty hard to meet the sales goals, as expected.

When I worked there it didn't matter what product we sold as long as we loaded them up on accessories and product service plans (extended warranties).

edit: eh, what spoon said. :P

I like how Gamestop pushes for warranties.

Eh, my experience with the 12-14 demographic (i.e. my son, his friends, my nephew, his friends) is that most of them are only tangentially aware that their console has a hard drive, much less what size it is. A discussion about used game DRM practices, internet connections pinging once a day* or, God forbid, DDR5 memory and APU architecture might as well be discussing medieval alchemy with them. Not that they're dumb, but their interest extends as far as "Will this let me play CoD with my friends? Yes? Ok, then"

*Given that they all play with each other online anyway, worrying about a required internet connection would seem a bit silly.

I never meant to imply that the young demographic would be aware of the kind of specifics that gaming culture cares about. I just meant that they'd be aware that one was the brunt of jokes, and the other wasn't, and that they'll certainly be getting targeted advertising regarding the games and features they should care about.

For the PS3, that'll be social media stuff and a fair number of games. I'm honestly not sure what that would look like on the XBone. None of their games seem like they'd be approved for advertising on youth channels, and most kids don't juggle too many TV stations. I don't see them caring as much about things like voice browsing via Kinect, skype options, etc.

On the other hand, all young people in my life with social media accounts seem to fill their pages with inane comments and updates about everything I do. I can easily see them using that share button.

I'm pretty sure they all play BF/COD anyway Smiley: grin

Anywho, I'm not trying to seriously debate the issue. As I said, I'd be interested in seeing the demographics just because the whole thing is fairly alien to me. I've nothing against consoles, but I don't have much interest in them either. Not because I think they suck but just because found out I can play games on my internet **** box.

I still think Xbox will retain a large section of their existing user base. They'll be tangentially aware of the Xbox being the brunt of jokes, but there's always been plenty of ****-talking at console releases, because people feel they have to justify buying one over the other. I'm sure plenty of a certain demographic will just be looking for the new Halo: Call of Maddenfield machine.

I agree.

I think the price point might hurt them to the less-than-informed customer, but these other features that everyone is complaining about- they don't apply to a lot of people.

I never sell my games.
I almost always have internet.
I pay for Xbox Gold regardless if content like Netflix is blocked otherwise (I use Netflix, but I have Gold for other reasons, so a paywall is almost meaningless).

I'm willing to bet there's a good deal of US customers that are in the same situation.

Yeah, anyone who uses it as a Call of Duty Box will probably just buy the next iteration.

So the real question is what kind of population is that?

And is Microsoft's new business model going to be able to withstand it? Because they've announced some BIG budgets, but that's not going to show a return if their primary consumer base is customers who just follow the same 1-3 game series and that's it. Theoretically, they're hoping to sell the XBone at a profit (hence the whatever billions they've promised for courting exclusive titles). They were expecting an absolutely insane number of console sales, though. Insane in the realm of "I can't believe we'd sell that many consoles this generation, period."

P.S. I do not like the plural of series. I do not like it at all.

One billion.

They've sold 77 million 360s, and apparently expect 25 million more sales over the next 5 years (why?)

Their argument is apparently that this generation is expected to inflate to 400 million (what?) and they can make that 1 billion through their mass-media offerings (what?)

I don't get it. The PS2 had over 150 million sales. The PS3 is 70 million.

That's cutting the sales in half, at least... Granted, the PS2 has been out for far longer, and was only recently firmly discontinued. But still.

They presented earlier this morning.

Showed mostly new installments of all their popular IPs (Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, etc.). Smash Bros will include Mega Man.

They introduced a new lineup of more console ports from this last gen.

Showed some Bayonetta 2 gameplay.

Can probably find a video around. I think reddit has a pretty good summary up.

Ok Which Megaman ? X, Classic, or Legends? (Or box art Smiley: oyvey ) Also just the price difference as most said here is a big enough lead for Sony. Parents are cheap they will see a 500 system or a 400 one and go for the cheaper of the 2.

As for additional accessories, yeah the stores get a bigger markup but most of that stuff isnt needed Like it was on the 360 (Rechargable battery packs, Wireless etc) Sony is pretty good at making sure its optional if you want an accessory and not really vital.

Only thing about Nintendo that bothers me is they have Bayonetta 2, Im hoping (And dreaming) that Platinum Games at least got the right to port to PC or something. I really really enjoyed the first game.
