EA gets exclusive deal for Star Wars games.

Press Release wrote:
The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) and Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) today announced a new multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines.

Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.
[...]
“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

I don't personally care all that much but there's folks a-ragin' across the net.

EA wants the exclusivity, and Disney wants micro-transactions in all the Star Wars games. One evil empire joining forces with another, the fanbase is screwed.

It's long past tremors and more like every star in the galaxy collapsing at the same time.

Use the Force...ful marketing strategy, EA!

Whatever, I'm just hoping EA will pick up Star Wars 1313 and finish it. Can't believe Disney closed that project, considering how much had already been made.

RIP LucasArts (1982-2013) Smiley: crymore

Yay for Yearly/Bi-yearly Star Wars games that are probably terrible or forgettable with tons of DLC/Microtransactions (Increase you Midoclorian count only 2.99!!!). If they are smart they let Bioware make the game and make Star Wars: Mass Effect Edition. Least then the first 2 games will be decent, the 3rd being a little bit better then average.

Honestly I haven't played a Star Wars game since N64. So I'm over it.

Nope, if Disney says 1313 is dead then it's dead. The only chance it had to survive was if Disney said they were storing it in the vault.

Someone may have snuck it in the vault though. All they'd have to do is slip it in with one of those Sleeping Beauty copies.

Has all the makings of a proper unholy alliance, 2 giant companies cutting a deal and such. Besides Star Wars could certainly benefit from another round of marketing hype and nickel-and-dime stuff to cover the exorbitant costs associated with another unimaginative and mediocre game. Smiley: rolleyes

Meh, honestly I'm really not too torn up about it. SWTOR really didn't really bother me to the same degree it did other people and I hadn't liked Simcity for a number of years, so missed out on that debacle. They'll do what they'll do, I'll keep my expectations low and hopefully they'll exceed them.

I thought TOR was a solid game at launch. It had issues, sure, but overall I liked it. Most of the griping I saw was griping I see for EVERY MMO launch. Lack of endgame content being the primary issue.

Their Free to Play model, however, is just ridiculous. Particularly when all the old players had already purchased the game for $60. I've barely played it at all since it went F2P, just because it left such a sour taste in my mouth. The fact that the best case scenario for F2P, which assumes you are buying unlocks/boosters/probes still sucks doesn't help (Credit cap, can't send credits to other characters, etc.)

I loved KOTOR. And I thought the first Force Unleashed was a solid game. Not perfect, but certainly enjoyable. Haven't really played much else in the SW genre since whatever that game where you had to fight the Battle of Hoth was.... I think it was N64 era, but my mind is blanking right now.

SWTOR was fun even with some silly stuff like those terrible time suck space station transfers. I got my 2 months out of it. Great stories and voice work. I was not looking for another end game life job replacement WoW 2.0 anyway. I level, enjoy the ride and gtfo before I become a daily questing raid drone chasing the +5 to Dex torture carrot.

I'm convinced that the majority of the 'TORtanic' negativity was perpetuated by people who never actually played the game, and if such a snappy name hadn't been come up with, it would have died down fairly quickly. Smiley: lol

TOR was very fun for a while. Sure, there were PvP balance issues, and I agree that the endgame raids were too easy, even on 'hard mode,' but it was nowhere near the disaster of game design that a very vocal population would have you believe. There was some stupid sh*t at launch (the AH search was absolutely dumb), but overall I thought it was decent, and one of the better WoW-likes that I've played. I was particularly impressed by how fun the non-lightsaber classes could be to play.

My biggest issues with TOR are with how they decided to implement the F2P system.

Star Wars games made in relatively rapid succession by EA? Awesome, my Madden Sith Lord 2014 got green lighted.

So what's left for EA? Since they only release games now that require a constant connection, wouldn't that fall within Disney's "online game" category?

Haha, like all dopes I crack myself up.

I too enjoyed SWTOR for a while but dropped it just before the F2P. Not because of F2P but because of my ADD and LotRO. Or was it WoW? Or maybe EVE? Whatever. I think Shojindo summed up my m.o. when it comes to new MMO releases now. Play them long enough to get to max level and gtfo.

I didn't actually mind the SWTOR F2P thing so much, but thank goodness I was subscribed when it launched and had taken the time to look up how it worked. I was able to purchase all of the unlocks via credits which was a big plus. Credits made by re-listing the items new F2Pers put GTN for the ridiculously low default prices just for the irony of it all. This only got worse when my subscription expired and they limited by ability to make credits through more conventional means. Can't imagine that was working as intended. Smiley: rolleyes

Oh well, the whole system felt like it was thrown together at the last second by people who didn't want to do it. Not too surprised by the outcome.

Despite all that, in the end it was the WoW-cloneness, and more than anything else the near constant stream of bugs that drove me away. Bugs are bad.

Meh. The second Disney acquired the rights and promptly killed a promising game, I just abandoned all hope of anything beyond more Star Wars: DDR games. Now starring Jar Jar because @#%^ you fans it's for the kids!
