A little late the the party here but I only played this game recently.

For all the hype and controversy regarding the story -especially the ending- when I finished the game I was left scratching my head and saying: Wait, that was it? That's what all the fuss was about?

Maybe I'm just jaded and have played too many games and watched to much anime or something, but I called almost all of the plot twists ahead of time, and found the ending to be kind of stupid rather than mind blowing. Am I missing something?

You played it too late and let the hype machine ruin it for you.

Also, what's with people trying to 'call the plot twists'. why do that to yourself?

I don't TRY to call plot twists. It just happens. I'm thinking about what's happening and what's going on, and my brain just automatically fills in the blanks. It's relatively rare for me to be surprised by rational twists in media. Which makes me appreciate the ones that DO surprise me so much more.

I didn't realize the twist in The Sixth Sense, and I loved it as a result. I DID realize the twist in The Prestige pretty much right away, and it made the whole movie way less interesting because of it.

It's not like I sit there and try and figure out how the story will end, in general.

Pretty much this.

You didn't care for it. That's okay. Move on to your next game.

That makes sense, I'm sure it's just how different people's minds work. When I'm watching a movie/playing a game I am 100% in the moment and never give a thought to what's going to happen later.

Granted, some movies/games make the 'twist' so obvious that even I can see where its going and holy crap is that a let down.

I wish I could sometimes just be in the moment, but I rarely am.

This has always been an issue for me, but I'm sure it became a bigger one once I started spending such a large portion of my time reading, and even more so when I started studying literature/history/philosophy. Pretty much trained my brain to automatically start identifying key details and causal chains.

And yeah, there are plenty of obvious twists anyone can see, and far too many twists that have absolutely no basis so there'd be no way to see them coming. Both of those are poor writing.

Though it also depends on how important the twist is. The fate of the summoners in FFX wasn't a surprise for me, but it was still valuable to me because Tidus was the one finding it out, and that's what mattered. But realizing how Jackman's character was performing his illusion in The Prestige really changes the feeling of the movie, and completely robs the big reveal of its value.

I'll expand a little on the hype comment and say that I found the game entertaining, well 'acted', pretty to look at and with a new fun new mechanics. Elizabeth's character was wonderful as both a character and as an NPC AI -- an escort mission where you like the person instead of hate having their dumb incompetent fragile *** shackled to you!

However everyone was wrapped up about the plot which, if it worked for you seems to have worked great and if it didn't work makes you say "pppfffttt... whatever!". I thought it was a solid, enjoyable game either way (though I liked the story and didn't foresee the ending) and it's too bad that expectations for a transcendent emotional experience overwhelmed the game's other positive points.

But not all things for all people. I was disappointed/underwhelmed with Half Life 2 and Mass Effect, a couple games that bring a select group of fans to ****** with just a mention. Lots of other games out there to play rather than dwelling on what didn't work for you.

Pretty much this. It's not intentional. I just kind of realize things as I go along.

Like Elizabeth being Booker's daughter. At the very first mention of Booker having a daughter who would be that age I immediately knew it. In fact it was SO obvious to me that I almost thought it was a red herring trying to lead me astray. Same with Comstock being Booker. Relatively early on I somehow just knew that Comstock was him from the future (parallel universe, but close enough.) Not sure how I knew it, but I did. Maybe too many games and too much anime have spoiled this kind of thing for me.

I didn't dislike the game or anything. It was a good game and fun to play. It's just that story story didn't come anywhere close to living up to the hype.

Mass Effect is terrible, I wouldn't qualify it or the series as considered a masterwork of gaming. Obviously popular, but so are Call of Duty and Halo. Not liking HL2....is pretty strange. Not because I liked it and you didn't, but because it's fairly widely regarded as one of the best video games ever. You liked Portal, right? I mean...no one doesn't like Portal....right? Right??

I liked Portal just fine. Half Life 2 just felt poorly paced and not very interesting. The boat portion went on far too long, the scary zombie portion wasn't anything great (and the platforming bit were annoying) and the story-telling segments didn't grab me. When I reached the second vehicle sequence (dune buggies) I just called it quits. I really can't explain it much better than that since it's been something like two years since I tried it and the details are long gone from my memory.

I've heard people defend it with a "You had to be there" mindset which may very well be true. Maybe the stuff it supposedly did well I've seen done better too many times since then.

Not liking Half Life 2 says more about you that it does about the game.

It says vicious, uncomplimentary things, like a popular girl in a highschool film.

Portal is really just a great game. Very solid puzzle platformer, wonderful writing, memorable characters. I'm a little bit in love with Wheatley from the second one... Perhaps, more than a little.

It doesn't really try to be more than it is, either, which is shockingly refreshing.
