A friend recently showed me this game, "Mad Father." It is made on a program called Wolf RPG Editor, so at first my expectations were fairly low. She started playing the game on Screen Share on Skype, so I watched for a bit. Its basically like a 2D classic Resident Evil survival-horror type game. She told me, "this game is really scary" and looking at the 2D sprite graphics I thought, "how could a game that looks like it belongs on the SNES possibly be scary?

I stopped paying attention after a few minutes of boring intro sequences until I started hearing her scream and make high pitch squealing noises and saying "no no no" like a crazy person. I put Skype back on the foreground and saw her character running frantically in circles to get away from some bloody dismembered zombie-type creatures. I became intrigued after numerous instances of helping her figure out what to do with certain items, keys, lighters, other objects to get into new areas and unravel the mystery of the game. A few times we both got pretty stumped as to what to do next, but we'd always find a breakthrough.

After a while something happened to my internet so I reset my laptop. When I came back she not responding on Skype, so I downloaded the game to give it a try myself. Despite it being a 16-bit side-scrolling RPG type game, the creators of the game were successful in making the overall atmosphere very immersive and VERY unsettling. You cannot fight any of the monsters in the game, and they do not appear frequently enough to really desensitize you to the idea that they could show up any time and attack you. A lot of times I find myself entering a dark room thinking "oh god, what is in here?" Finding no monsters, I am often greeted with a cutscene that is dozens of times more disturbing than any creature could be.

I haven't finished the game yet, but I have read there are multiple possible endings.

Did you ever find your friend or did the Mad Father get her?

Looks interesting. I'm gonna check it out after work. I need something a bit 'different'.

That's the first thing I thought as well:

2 months later they found her dismembered corpse. Hanging out in the park. With some other Zombies.

Playing frisbee.

DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME!

Close. She had "mom aggro," and her mom is a freakin' psycho. She came in once while we were on Skype sounding like the Insanity Wolf yelling at her.

For kicks and giggles, I'm watching an LP of it on youtube... so far, not bad. Not scary, but entertaining.

Wasnt there a JP only NES Horror game that was kind of like that, that a year or 2 ago was fan-translated, I think I remember watching the Happy Video game Nerd talk about it on a Halloween episode.

Ill see if I can find it, it sounds really similar.

Yep found it, It's Called Sweet Home.

Quote:
Though it was a role-playing video game, Sweet Home served as the main inspiration for the seminal survival horror game Resident Evil,[2] which was originally intended to be a remake of Sweet Home.[3

Finished the LP, saw all three (I think that's all?) endings. None of them are necessarily "happy" endings. The story was unnerving at parts, but never really scary. And the LPer I was listening to became more and more annoying as the LP continued Smiley: lol Anyway, spoiler for the endings:

Ending 1: If you choose to let your father be taken away, Maria ends up turning you into a doll no matter what.
Ending 2: If you save your father but haven't read Maria's diary, Father turns you into a doll.
Ending 3: If you save father but have read the diary, Maria and the blonde-haired boy say you and you and Maria escape as the mansion burns. Then it turns out that you become a mad doctor in the future, opening up a free clinic to kidnap poor folks and turn them into dolls just like your Father.

If you collect all 21 gems, you get a bonus scene revealing what happened to Father if he "dies;" basically it implies that he's taken to another dimension by Ogre, where he works on creating a new Aya who will stay with him forever.

There's still a fair amount of unanswered questions, especially about the bonus for collecting all 21 gems. I'm not really sure who the blonde-haired boy was, or how he was related to the mother, or why some of the monsters are friendly and others are evil. Seems pretty wily-nily. Still, if it's a free game it looked pretty amusing to play through.

Mother found out I was killing animals.
Mother scolded me.

Shut up.

I stabbed mother with a knife.
Mother fell over. All red.
It didn't suit such a pretty face.
So I wiped mother's face.
Her dead face was very pretty.

I watched some of the LPs to see the different endings. If you're watching the ones I think you were, he kind of ruins the whole thing with his extremely annoying attempts at voice acting-- so much so that I actually took the time to collect all the gems to see the added scene at the end.

Its nothing much but:

Basically, it shows a scene where the father is in Hell or somewhere with the bald demon salesman guy. Father's face is turned away from the screen and never says a word, but only nods in response to the demon sales guy, who has come to check on the progress of his continued research. Apparently father made a clone of Aya's adult form, which stands in suspended animation inside a giant tube.

Some monsters are friendly because they feel that helping Aya will bring about the end of the curse. Burning the house and everything in it brings them a kind of closure, allowing them to rest peacefully after years of resentment for Father. Other monsters are hostile because they seem less sentient, mindlessly raging at whatever comes near them. Some don't seem to know where or who they are. The blonde boy is just another one of Father's victims, who somehow retained enough clarity after death to conspire and communicate with the curse's ringleader, Aya's mother.

The whole thing is very reminiscent of Pet Sematary.
