Surprised no one made a topic for it yet.

(3DS)
Trailer:

Worldwide release in October 2013.

The fire fox starter Fennekin, looks best of the three to me and the deer legendary reminded me of Princess Mononoke, it looks like France setting.

Anyone planning on buying?

Chespin looks happy.

Also, meh on the names (X and Y? Smiley: confused). Did they finally run out of colors or something?

Am I the only one who is more than a little disappointed with how they've been designing pokémon since generation 4?

I still think the pinnacle of the series was Gold and Silver. It's just seemed like they've been running out of ideas for a while now. Though, I felt like WoW had the same problem last expansion, and they seem to have pulled themselves out of that slump recently, so it's possible. It remains to be seen if Pokemon can do it too while still holding to their formula.

Has anything changed since Red/Blue other than the graphics and the names/appearances of the critters?

You can battle with two pokemon on the field in certain battles.

You can battle with three pokemon in certain battles! And they added rotation battles, but other than that (and online trading functionality, whichtbh is what got me hooked on the current generation) not a whole lot has changed.

I really didn't get into black/white but I picked up W2 and something just clicked for me. It really worked, the formula was perfect addiction (although a lot of it is from lag trades, I currenctly have more than 250 hours on my cart and I -still- need more than 100 pokes for my dex)

I am stoked about the next gen. As for the art, Eh, I think new pokes always seemed a little jarring. There are some pokes I think look stupid and so I won't use ever (timbur carrying that stupid beam for example). I didn't like the look of the starters in 5th gen other than snivy (which was passable) which really turned me off, falling in love with my starter has always been key to getting me hooked. Might be why I liked W2 better since I started with a genesect and got a whole bunch of dream radar pokemon I could use from the beginning. Having some familiar random pokemon tossed in to the wild also helped lots.

I think the fire-fennec looks awesome, so that alone has me stoked. I also really like the look of the frog (I love frogs), but I will definitely be starting with the fennec.

I am a collector at heart, so pokemon is great. It satisfies my desire to collect without adding to the clutter in my life. The formula is simple, but as someone who has never ever won a random wifi battle yet, I can attest to the fact that it is a stupid hardcore game. If I was stuck on a desert island (especially one with wifi, lol) and I could only have one game I'd have W2, because I could spend countless hours breeding a team with strong IVs and abilities and natures, EV training them, and then, even if I didn't have wifi I could try to get an epic long streak in the battle subway.

O pokemon, you are so grindy... But I love you.

The names of the two main Legendaries have been announced.

Kotaku wrote:
Spied at the end of the announcement trailer yesterday, two new Pokémon in the upcoming Pokémon X and Y have been confirmed as the game's Legendary Pokémon and named. The Pokémon company has included a handy pronunciation guide.

The deer one is Xerneas. Say its name like this: "ZURR-nee-us."

The bird/dragon one is Yveltal, pronounced "ee-VELL-tall."

The quote was slightly edited because I didn't feel like reposting their pictures.

I hope the dragon one has no flying type. There are too many flying (and psychic) legendaries. And I love pyschic type pokes but they need more dark/ghost/electric/steel/bug/normal type legends (although normal type sucks, I love many normal type pokes... Like Ursaring. I have a shiny ursaring and she is boss. Even though she sucks I still try to use her competitively... And I lose....

Ok, being a geek here...

Agreed, though some of that may be a combination of nostalgia and the fact that gen 2 changed and added a huge amounts of stuff over gen 1, and we never saw that level of change ever again. The difference between gen 1 and gen 2 is far bigger than any of the others.

I've still enjoyed every generation though (except maybe gen 3) and am very excited about gen 6. It may be the same old formula again, but hey, the formula works so I can't complain too much.

Yeah but that magic was recreated in Gen 4 with Heart Gold and Soul Silver. There are still mechanics in that iteration that I want to see come back - for example expanding on Yellow's following pickachu, almost any Poke can follow you in the overworld. It was actually HG and SS that got me back into pokes, I absolutely loved Gold. It was actually the first game where I ever finished a main storyline (beating the elite four!) and beating lance and his trollish-dragonites was hard for me at the time. It was my initiation into the world of exp grinding, lol.

I would have never played B/W/1/2 if I hadn't gotten dragged back in by HG and SS

Anyone tried the Nuzlocke challenge? I've been considering giving it a shot on one of my old copies, but I don't know if I have the dedication required.

Nope, because if I wanted to play Dark Souls I would just do so (or Dead Space 2 Hard Core mode).

Supposedly, you end up being more attached to the pokemon, and use pokemon you normally wouldn't much more often.

I'm attached to my pokemon so much that I don't delete the save file until years later. Those rules sound like they're for the players that get off on EV training (as opposed to Eevee training).

A lot of the game in black/white/1/2 is not really fully completable without EV training (and finding/trading for/pokemon with good IVs and natures) - the level capped stuff is brutally hard. I haven't even beat the first subway boss and I have a few pokes with flawless or near flawless IVs that have been EV trained. Granted I've been using some crap pokemon in there as well but it is actually stupid hard. The trouble is trainers in say, the (ingame) Pokemon World tournament have pokes with flawless Ivs and maxed EVs, so if you go in without some well trained pokes with good genes, you'll get blown away.

I thought it was interesting when I heard of it it, but man, the game is grindy enough without doing this. Of course, it depends. I spend a lot more time on the non-storyline aspects of the game than the main story (which I sort of see like an obstacle to be beat so I can do other things)

It's a common problem for games where optimizing winning makes the game less enjoyable.

Yeah, I'd really like them to consider changing the system somewhat, because currently it is weighted really heavily in favour of hacking and RNGing, so basically, unless you know someone who RNGs and are able to secure pokemon with flawless or near flawless IVs and helpful natures, you're at a huge disadvantage in competition.

I've bred like 100 of a single pokemon and the best result I've gotten with continually upgrading the parents is four flawless IVs (out of a possible six), on one single pokemon. IV breeding was (thankfully) a secondary goal (the main one was breeding that poke for trading on the GTS - it's high demand, I bred them to get pokes I needed for my dex).

At any rate, doing that for a whole team is not feasible in a reasonable time span. Even using parents with good IVs, 3/4 of any set of eggs I breed will have only 1 or 2 perfect IVs and may only rate "above average." After spending 30 hours getting that one good pokemon, then you need to EV train it... it's a nightmare.

If no one cloned/hacked/rnged then the reward (having a better than average poke on your team) would be worth the time spent. But I'd be shocked if anyone who won consistently competitively wasn't using clones or is an RNGer themselves.
