I feel bad because I died...

Not fair when you only have 20something HP and the Avian type enemies cast a wind spell that hits you for like 17 damage. By the time I switched back to Oliver to try and heal the other monsters had reached melee range and popped of enough hits to finish me off.

Wasn't prepared for that.

Yeah the game has a slight learning curve so far learning to cancel attacking and switch it defending quick while enemies cast spells etc. I feel the "wheel" menu in combat would be a tad better if it was a bit more "FF" menu where you can see all the options but I may need time to get used to it. Otherwise Im liking it, only about 4 hours in so far.

I wouldn't really call it a learning curve. More like a sucker punch.

Fight a Baatender, take 0-5 damage in the fight.
Fight another one, take another 0-5 damage in the fight. Heal up with a health orb after battle.
Ok, seems pretty easy so far. Makes sense, first few battles, level 0-1 enemies.

Fight a Major Byrde, it casts a wind spell at the very beginning of battle and hits you for 17 damage.
Ok, those hurt, gotta make sure I'm ready for those creatures.

Later:
Fight a Teeny Bopper, it's about as strong as a Baatender.
Fight another one, it's just two Teeny Boppers, not bad.
Find another Teeny Bopper and it has a little round guy in it's group that casts the same wind spell as the Major Byrde.
Dead.

I played through the Demo, which had two little bits. And the first one was this first quest in the Deep Dark Woods. So I thought I knew what to expect. But I'm pretty sure I never had any of the enemies cast a wind spell on me that hit that hard.

I'm just saying that it seems that enemy magic is a bit overpowered for these early enemies. I tried once to dodge the magic attack but that ended up being a pointless endeavor. And if they are going to cast it that fight it almost always seems to be at the beginning of the battle before you even select your first command. (For me they seemed to cast it about 75% of the time, the other 25% they just ran up to you and started pecking).

Huh I didnt have any issues with them at all, not even sure if i saw that wind spell. Also why is your Hp so low I think at lvl 1/2 I had like 30-45 hp? Idk Maybe its just RNG gods hating on you. The Boss in the woods explains the defending when you see a creature start to cast something. Which gets you a Nice (Orbs) Your using the first familiar im guessing? IDK, Ive died alot more then Im used to in a JRPG but Im getting used to how the game works too, but honestly it doesnt do much hand holding. Just gives you the abilities then says good luck.

I watched a couple reviews, Gametrailers said its pretty difficult with spikes going into each new area(and a big one at 2/3 complete) and Rev3 on youtube said it was only hard in the beginning. I don't feel yet I've died any cheap deaths, but some of the side missions seem alil unfair (3v1) but I was able to get passed them.

Also you can't usually dodge casted abilities, Ive seen one thats a short distance AOE but a vast majority seem like single target direct casts, you need to defend against them not dodge. Also I do feel the first 5 ish lvls are a bit harder due to low MP and the abilities are a bit costly.

I'm not saying the 17 damage one shots me. But it does take a sizable chunk out of my HP. I think I was around 30 or so? And after taking 4-5 damage over a couple fights, an unexpected 17 damage fast cast spell at the beginning of battle as your character is running towards the enemy after you already told him to attack leads to your death very quickly. I fought four Major Byrdes on the world map (before getting my Familiar or any spells) and 3 of them cast the wind spell as their very first move. Oddly enough that wasn't what killed me. After getting my familiar it was the little caster in a group Teeny Boppers that cut my HP down to about 10-12 and then the melees smacked me up as I switched over to Oliver to try to cast a Heal.

I'm still enjoying the game. I'm just saying that's not really a learning curve. It's not that I had to learn I couldn't just mindlessly grind out early monsters. It's that suddenly there is a spell that can easily take away 40-50% of your HP (and it comes from a "garbage" mob) when everything else around you does 5-10%. I'm sure this is a minor gripe that is alleviated by a couple level of character improvement. At least it did seem that they only cast it once per battle, and always at the start. Even the one that didn't cast it at the start did not cast it later.

I don't think it's so much a learning curve issue as it is a caution one. I don't know about anyone else, but it's been a while since I've played any RPG where I had to be especially cautious with overworld trash, and here if you're not paying attention you'll get trounced.

Some of the dialog is just... out there. First town there is a little girl standing, facing a tree, who says "Ya, Pee-Pee Time!"

They did a good job with the localization though, Only played about 5 hours but there seems to be a lot of simple jokes and plays on words that make perfect sense in English.

That wasn't that weird. If you talked to her outside of town beforehand during the brokenhearted guard bit she was complaining about how badly she needed to go.

Well good thing she found that tree, huh? Still a bit weird given where she is.

The other night when I first started playing the game my Dad came over with a HDD for me to backup for him. It only only about 7GB of data but it took a while, so he was sitting out in the livingroom for an hour or so watching me play.

His first comments were "So is this a movie or a game?" and then he said "That kid looks familiar." I explained to him that it was animated by Studio Ghibli, but the only film of theirs he ever saw was at my house when I was watching Howl's Moving Castle. But the kid does resemble the little apprentice boy who lives with Howl. Mostly due to the animation similarities. It was just weird that he remembered that ONE thing, because he cannot remember anything dealing with movies. When I told him where he likely remembered the kid from he didn't even believe he had seen that movie before and I had to fire it up on the DVR (still had it saved) and show him in order for him to believe that he had watched it.

I checked my email last night and saw a Promo Code from Amazon for my Ni No Kuni preorder. A "Griffy" Familiar. So now I have a familiar ticket in my inventory. Guess I just have to progress until I can use it.

Oh, and like I thought, a level or two of character improvement and spells go from dangerous to mosquito bites (Malaria free ones, of course).

Been on the fence about getting this. It looks good and I want to play it so bad but I can't really afford it right now and I don't have time for it.

I think it'll have to wait until I graduate, in the summer. Smiley: frown

About 18 hours played so far. Not exactly 18 hours in though, since I took some time to go back and collect colored chests as I unlocked opening methods and then tried collecting one of every monster in previous areas. Currently have just got the boat and made it to Hamelin. One thing I've noticed so far, is this is one of those games where small stat changes can make a BIG difference. Met Al-Khemie, and got my *** handed to me. Reloaded and did a couple quests I had waiting, gained 1-2 levels, fought Al-Khemie again and it was the other way around.

BTW. Swaine... a 40something year old creepy man who can't grow a full beard, running around with two little kids. I wonder if Esther's father would approve of him hanging out with his daughter.

Friendship Trial was a pain in the ***. Especially when it decided to swap left/right.

Ha ha, yeah. The Friendship Trial was the most annoying mini-game I've seen in a long time.

I haven't moved anywhere in the game for the past two days. I think I'll have to wait until the weekend and play all day again. Too many things going on during the week to sit down and play for any extended period of time which makes me sad cause I want to get back in and finish the current quest I'm on.

Loving this game so far. I just finished Hamelin in the past and am about to go back to the present. I ordered the Wizard's Edition and it took Digital River until pretty much the end of the day after release to ship. I didn't experience any issues (probs cause I preordered in 07/2012), but my copy still didn't arrive until last Friday. The Wizard's Companion hard cover they made for the SE is awesome and is a complete replica of the ingame book. Also, STUFFED DRIPPY!!1

Combat to me is most similar to a mix between Pokemon and Star Ocean 2. I found myself surprised to be employing kiting methods on some bosses since that isn't something I recall doing outside of MMO's. Once strong enough, it is certainly easy enough to HULK SMASH everything, but you really do have to may attention and defend, even on garbage mobs. A button masher, this is not.

Unless you got the Griffy Preorder bonus... seriously that guy is over powered. Right now he has about twice the Attack and Defense as any other familiar on my team. A "Psych Up" and "Go Wild" and he does about 3-4x the damage of my other attackers.

Compared to the problems I faced with garbage mobs when I was level 1-10 or so, now I'm around level 35 (player level) and pretty much stomp everything, even without using Griffy. And even Bosses are falling quickly. I beat on them and they are at 50% hp then Drippy pops in and says "Here's the secret to beating this guy!" and I don't even have to worry about it because the boss is dead in another minute.

I just beat the game like ten minutes ago, and I've got to say it is a ridiculously downer game. Good game, but damn.

Dinoceros are awesome. I've got two just in case one isn't enough to end the fight for some reason, which is rare. Perdida is awesome to level grind. I went from like 40 to 70 in an hour and leveled a whole new team. Just cast Veil and target the Tokotokos (green blobs carrying staves) and kill them quickly and boom, 9k exp. Even caught one, but damn does it take a lot of exp to level and not entirely sure why I'd want to. But new game plus is active, not sure if I want to but it's available.
