X-Com: Enemy UnknownFollow

Anyone? I'm surprised we don't have memorials in this forum with entire squads worth of death. If you haven't played/heard of it: It's a pretty stellar RTS/RPG Hybrid & remake. The "interesting" part of the game is; you get assigned a random squads of guys & gals over the course of the game & each squad member can level up, get new abilities, & are internationally customizable. However, if squad members die on a mission, they stay dead.

The first couple times it happens early on, you're all like, "Who cares? I'll just level another Heavy/Support/Assault/Sniper." Later on, you'll be all like, "No! I can't live without "x" squad member & need to redo the mission!"

Now, I'm not actually attached to the characters, mind you, as the individual squad members don't really have any sort of personality. Their abilities, however, become indispensable.

Good game; addictive, challenging, & fun!

I would absolutely love XCOM if it weren't for 2 things. Some of the bugs are pretty vicious, especially when trying to do Classic Ironman (or Ironman of any sort, really.) Having a Muton Elite teleport next to my party sucks, especially if its position negates my cover.

The other problem I have is the constant delays throughout the entire game. Every time you do pretty much anything there are little cut scenes. Launching the interceptor or starting a mission. My escape key has never seen so much use. During combat is pretty bad, as each time you move a unit it drags the camera with it, and when the aliens take their turn the camera is locked into place if they aren't visible. Its especially bothersome if you have to restart, say during an Iron Man campaign, because it drags out each battle far longer than it needs to.

I really like the combat itself, and the random units I like as it forces a different play style depending on what type of squad you get. All the basic mechanics that make up the game I like, its just I wish they wouldn't keep freezing my controls.

Love the game. Beaten it on normal, currently doing Ironman Classic but I got sidetracked by the Guild Wars 2 Halloween stuff.

Beat it on normal. Considering going back to maybe play again after I finish Dishonored. Honestly, it just made me pine for XCOM. I'm waiting for the complete pack to go on sale again and going to snag it. I easily dropped 200+ hours into the PS1 version when it first came out. Played the others later.

It's ok. Very repetitive. Feels dumbed down. By the end, my squad was basically eschewing cover and easily finishing fights within a few rounds. 2xHeavy, 2XSniper, Support, Assault. Titan/Plasma everything, all maxed out. If I had to assign XCOM EU an arbitrary score, I'd say 7/10. A little disappointing though since I let myself get so hyped for it. Got the PC version with the patch and the hard book.

Enemy Within just came out. If you haven't played X-Com: Enemy Unknown & like RTS games, nows the time as you don't need the vanilla game to play this version. This version is better.

For those who have played, Within fixes a lot of the gripes with the vanilla game. Much more varied maps as opposed to the same few recycled ones. Bug fixes. Mechs. Alien Augments. Base invasions!

TO make the permadeaths count a bit more, try customizing your squad after friend, family, & co-workers and X-Com becomes a murder simulator.

Actually you do, it's an expansion not a standalone game. It must have downloaded the main game as well if you didn't have it installed.

Nu uh.

It's not necessarily an expansion because the story is largely the same. You can buy it off the shelf for $40 ($30 on PC) if you don't have the original.

It is stand alone on console only. PC version is a standard expansion and require enemy unknown.

It's actually a pretty good deal on console if you never played enemy unknown. For 39.99$ you get the base game, all previous DLC and enemy within expansion.

If you're planning to get Enemy Within then go with that instead, since it includes the main game and the 3 DLC. All for the Price Gouging amount of $40. Smiley: disappointed

I ended up trying to play Metro 2033 again this weekend, but realized it made me want to /wrists again. (Holy depressing Russians Batman)

So I tried Xcom EU instead and immediately got hooked. It kind of freaks me out fighting so many grey types, but it's also therapeutic... maybe if I don't get nightmares and X-Files flashbacks. The RTS stuff seems solid. I like managing my research and engineering projects. The combat is also surprisingly tense for turn based. I have a lot of trouble letting any of my guys get killed after they get their cool "handle" names.

I've had the alien base mission ready for a while but have not taken the plunge. I wanted to make sure my guys were really buffed up first. I have carapace armor and am working on titan. I have all laser weapons now. There are like 3 countries going orange panic right now but I got out another satellite just in time to save my only red one before the council message.

I figure I will do the base in one more month as a emergency -2 panic button option before council resets. I'm probably buff enough now to do it if I was careful I'm guessing.

Anyway so yeah some of the new stuff in the expansion looks like it will be fun to play with. Will most likely check it out.

Take two snipers with Squadsight and the Sensor Grenade on the base assault, you need them for the Disks and Crystalisks. And make sure everyone but the snipers have a medkit, have the snipers carry S.C.O.P.E.S.

Heavies with the + damage to electronic enemies helps too. Since heavies get double grenades, I usually don't bother giving anyone but medics medkits, since they get to use them 4 times with upgrades & I tend to roll with two.

In my new X-Com: Enemy Within, I tend to roll w/1 Mech, 1 Sniper (Scope, the thingy that attracts aliens), 1 Heavy (Double Grenades, Alien/Sensor) 1 Assault (Double Armor), 2 Medics (Medics each have 1 4 pac of medkits & usally the stungun).

I went with Nanoweave over extra medkits for the base. Had 1 support with extra medkits. Got the base done no problem with 2 snipers, 2 assualt, 1 support, 1 heavy. Using laser weapons and titan armor. Scope on the snipers, medkit on the support, and nanoweave on everything else.

I will say this about that:

It started out all awesome. I was like oh **** I just pulled 3 groups and my position is not all that great. Plus I got a nasty grenade from the disk right off the bat. I figured I would learn from it if I just pressed on so I could be ready for a cleaner start. But I somehow managed to pull out the first few fights pretty sweet. Used up all my medkits but figured I'll just go for it. I don't know if it scales higher when you wait like I did but it was disk and Muton city up in there.

So after the initial chaos I started doing my normal patient bunny hoping cover overwatch routine. And did not see another dam mob all the way until the commander. Smiley: dubious I spent like 20 minutes patienly planning and positioning every room for a ambush that never came.

When the commander came out my Sniper popped him in the face and I decided that was good enough for me.

I just finished EU. Loved it. Hopefully EW goes on sale for at least 33% off for Thanksgiving.

My only guy who lived from the very first mission was a heavy named "Arcade". He was kind of a ******, first to panic on every mission. WE'RE DOGMEAT MAN GAME OVER. He lived until the very last mission. But when my completely badass sniper "Loki" shot the main baddie the mind control break killed poor old Arcade. /Salute you were an entertaining cowardly lion my friend. You are shooting rockets in pixel heaven now. Smiley: cry

You should have told her that there isn't another woman like her, then finished the game with an all male team. Then for the next playthrough go all female, if she asks tell her it was time to move on. Smiley: cool

I am currently playing on normal for my first try with Enemy Within & her character is a max leveled medic - so this playthrough is fine. Its when I switch to ironman classic & get to the first terror mission that things tend to start to go bad.
