Hey folks,

So, I'm now a regular on NGN's gaming podcast. We're playing around with formatting a bit, and I figured I'd see if there was any interest in doing a "questions" segment.

Would anyone like to throw out any questions for the podcast? I'm not quite vain enough to assume that there's any inherent interest in the podcast itself here, but you'd be helping me out, and hey, you might get to make 3-4 strangers talk about something at your bidding, so that's kinda cool.

Any kind of question is fine. Games-related, tangentially-games related, or not. No guarantee we can use any particular question, but if it's decent, I'll try to make sure it gets on.

If you want to listen to how the podcast goes, click the link above. I'm Nick, the guy who's drinking during the recording and talks about TTT2.

Sweet, sweet rate-ups for responses.

Cheers folks.

An issue I've had with games recently, as a strictly PC gamer, is why so many games developed for consoles have really crappy PC ports. A lot of them have really imprecise mouse controls, menu interfaces clearly designed for a controller, inability to change important video settings, inability to bind things to mouse-4 and mouse-5 buttons, FoV that is too narrow, etc. Nowadays I have to do research to make sure a game was developed specifically for PC, or that the port was well-done (like Borderlands 2, in contrast to Borderlands 1, which was a poor port).

That's a good one, thanks! I put it in our google doc for the episode. I'll post the ep. when it goes up (it'll have a time stamp for when we do the question, assuming we get to it, which we should).

If anyone else has anything, I'm all ears. It doesn't have to be super thought-out.

Another PC based question, but do you think Origin and UPlay will ever be able to surpass Steam's digital delivery market share?

Quckly, stick it in the escape pod and send it to the nearest planet before the Imperials find it!

Help me, shaostrike, you're my only hope!

So, the episode is up, in case anyone's curious. A bit labored, perhaps, but we were two guys short, and we went long. I'll get better at this stuff as I get more podcasting experience.

Questions addressed at 1:09:14.

Bumpage. Podcastin' again this Sunday.

Anyone want to provide a question for the episode? We're 2 for 2 on answering them (quality of answers notwithstanding), and I'd super-appreciate it. (For the folks who don't care if I appreciate it, I also rate-up).

Current events or state-of-the-industry stuff might make for some good questions, like this bizarre image of Geoff Keighley, or stuff about current games (I've been playing a lot of Dishonored, personally).

Any input would be awesome.

DA:O - Greatest or Greatestest Game?

Heh, more seriously maybe something about last weekend's (wait... the weekend before?) EA Origin store coupon debacle? That seemed like industry news. You could take it in direction of whether or not it was "right" to take the games, whether or not EA should have revoked the games rather than saying "Have fun with 'em", etc.

Joystiq reported yesterday that the PS3 may have been permanently hacked. Perhaps you can use that as a topic.

Considering that the new XBox is using AMD processors and GPUs, no.

Has AMD come out with their next gen line to rival Sandy Bridge yet? I haven't been following PC news for a while.

Got another topic for you. Here is a list of the heavy handed restrictions going in affect for SW:TOR F2P.

At this point it seems like more and more like an expanded trial version than a F2P thing. I suppose you don't generate hype that way though... Smiley: frown

That's....kind of crazy.

I appreciate all the suggestions, guys. Thanks very much! I'll add some of this stuff to our schedule. Though one note: for the questions, it's better for us if they're phrased in actual question form. The bulk of the podcast goes by the format of "introduce topic, then banter", so the questions bit works best if it's a more directed, Q & A style.

But awesome stuff anyway. Much appreciated.

What is "How are potential SW: TOR customers getting screwed over?".

I'll take "Goddammit EA" for $1,000, Alex.

Wow, @#%^ing UI limitations, no cargo access? I was looking forward to reactivating my account. I pre-ordered the collector's edition, and really liked the game. I'm sure the game-currency I'll get for having that and my previous subscription will be enough to unlock most of that stuff, but it is some serious bullsh*t that I'd even have to. I kind of get the no mailing or trading to subvert RMT accounts, but some of that stuff is ridiculous.

Free-to-Play should not mean that you are forced to pay in order to have a functional game. Restricting things like quickslots is absolute bullsh*t. Not to trash on ZAM, but it's kind of how at one point they were reserving basic forum abilities to Premium accounts (though it's certainly better now than it was). There needs to be more reward for paying and less punishment for not. The way TOR is doing this is making me more likely to just not play at all rather than enticing me to upgrade to a subscription again.

As for a question, here's a fun one:

What do you think the ramifications of Steam coming to Linux are? Do you think big publishers and developers are going to be willing to limit their restrictive DRM in order to make Linux ports, or do you think it it will solely be a bastion (haha, puns) of independent games? Alternatively, do you think the introduction of some allowed DRM (as Steam is basically a DRM service) onto Unix-based systems will open the floodgates for supported DRM? Will other software companies aside from video game publishers be able to introduce their own DRM-laden programs there?

SURPRISE, they announced that you only get those cartel coins if you are subbed when they make the F2P switch.

[EDIT]

They announced today you'll get a preferred status label, though, which means:

Quote:
Once our Free-to-Play option launches, Free-to-Play Players will gain Preferred Player Status by making a single purchase through our website. This purchase can simply be a quantity of Cartel Coins, or a Game Time Card, or even a month of a Subscription. Additionally, former Subscribers who are returning as Free-to-Play Players, will find they have Preferred Status!

As a Preferred Status Player, you will gain the following benefits compared to Free-to-Play Players:
• The Sprint ability at Level 1
• Access to your Cargo Hold (an 80 item Player Bank)
• Access to Secure Trade
• The ability to send Mail, including one (1) attachment
• Increased allowance for chat message frequencies in Public chat channels (such as /general)
• An increased Credits Cap
• Access to the Who List
• Three (3) additional Sale Slots on the Galactic Trade Network (for a total of 5)
• One (1) additional active Crew Skill Slot (for a total of 2)
• Reduced skill point respecialization costs
• Increased Server queue priority

In addition to the above benefits, Subscribers who return as Preferred Status Players will find that they retain any Cargo Hold and Inventory expansions they had unlocked, any Legacy Unlock or Perk they have gained (including Species) and can continue to use any Artifact equipment that was bound to them previously.
