Got a response from ArenaNet and it was fairly uninformative. Got a mass email response (that's what they called it) telling me to reply with my GW2 account name, etc. I replied that I did not own a GW2, hence the support ticket in the first place, but then they replied that I responded from an email address not associated with the "incident" (I've got three or four email addresses linked to my Gmail), so now I have to resend the ticket.

Whatever, I'll guess someone made a mistake somewhere, or someone used my email address to create a GW2 account, in which case I guess I can always retrieve it later. Smiley: sly

Edit: Now they've created an account for me, lul.

I'm on the edge, got a few questions. It may not be fair to ask these so early, they may have been answered, but I'm not digging through a bajillion posts of "made my snowflake pony, looking forward to actually playing."

-- solo-friendly? It's been a while since we've had a "need a party to do anything" game like FFXI/EQ but it still makes me wary. I like the chance to be anti-social when I want.
-- is the story quest a straight-jacket? In SWTOR it hauls you to every corner of every planet, making it impossible to skip a planet (you can skip the non-class quests but you're still running everywhere) and leaving nothing new to be discovered rolling a new character. If I say "I want to see what's on the other side of those mountains" will it prevent me from doing any more personal story until I come back and whack goblins?
-- are respecs free? Are we allowed multiple characters without paying unlike PSO2?

Well geez, if you're going to be all mean.

Solo friendly in the open world, but in an odd sort of way: they've simultaneously made cooperation important and eliminated the need to ever speak to anyone. There's no such thing as tagging a mob or competing for nodes or quest items. Anyone who participates in a kill gets xp and their own individual chance at loot. Any node that shows up on your map will be there for you even if someone else gets there before you. Also anyone can rez anyone (and you get a little xp for it). So during dynamic events or just while questing, everyone is pretty cooperative and if someone comes along while you're in a fight, they'll stop and fight too. And yet, there is no need to group for any of it, since you all get xp anyway. So, no chit chat.

Story quests are their own separate thing, independent of exploration or any other activity, and entirely optional. My husband finds them annoying so doesn't do them at all and he's leveling just fine. I like them personally because I dig the lore and all that, and the rewards are often nice. Travel is not really an issue since there are portals everywhere for cheap.

Respecs are not free. I don't think they're very expensive, but I have no experience since all my characters are still low level. You have 5 character slots, which is enough to play every race but not every profession. You can expand up to 8, I believe, via the cash shop.

Edit: I should also note about respecs though - you only have to respec if you want to change the number of points you have in a trait line. Each trait line has major traits which you pick from a list - those can be swapped any time for free out of combat.

Very solo-friendly. I haven't actually engaged in any group content yet. Well I suppose that depends on how you define it. See, in GW2, you don't ever "tag" mobs. If you help kill a mob, you'll get full exp for it, and each player has a separate loot table/chance. So there's no node stealing, no mob stealing, etc. So you could actually finish quests just by running around and assisting players in killing what they've already grabbed.

There are also world events where a temporary quest will appear and players from all over will swarm it. You'll get ranked (bronze through gold) when the quest is finished, but I'm not sure how that's tabulated. I'm thinking it has to do with the amount of time you spend (whether you arrive near the end, or early on) and how much you contribute. I also don't think they force anyone down to silver or bronze just to maintain a curve. This is essentially group content, but with no real need to coordinate or actually group up.

And quests themselves are generally such that you can accomplish them in various ways. Like they'll give you a list of objectives and you can mix in all of them or just do one until you fill the completion gauge. Events are a lot more focused, like retrieving items or downing waves of enemies, escorting an NPC, downing a boss, etc.

You get a significant bonus to your guild influence rewards for doing them while grouped with guildies though. So very solo friendly, but with a decent enough incentive to team up.

2. Nope. You'll get a story quest every 1-2 levels, and they definitely aren't designed to help you explore. They incentivized that through map completion and skill point nodes.

3. Well, you only "spec" by picking your traits. I honestly have no clue if they can be reselected for free or not, but their relatively minor compared to your weapon skills, which you get from your 1-2 equipped weapons, and your utility skills, which you can switch out whenever you are OOC. Also, most classes get to equip two weapon sets for in-combat switching.

Okay, I think that's the information I expected. Extra money in the budget this month, off to download the game and make a snowflake pony.

Okay, I just helped a woman catch a jackalope in order to hunt a yeti, and then played some drunken beer keg hockey. 60 bucks well spent even if the rest of the game is a giant goatse.

I love the vistas compared to SWTOR's datacrons. They're on the map, completely optional, and absolutely beautiful.

Yeah, I hated the datacrons. They were ridiculously annoying to find.

I didn't mind the TOR datacrons. What I minded was that they didn't bind to your account. And a few of them were mired by annoying jumps/walls that made getting them a pain. But the puzzle aspect was kinda neat. I do agree they should have been on the map, though.

I'm withholding judgement on the Norn area. I don't want the amount of time I've spent with Skyrim in the past year to color things for me. I'm not that interested in the race in general, so I'm trying to keep an open mind.

I thought I would hate the viewpoints as well and now I love them. In fact I have completed all 3 zones I have been in in the human area. There are all kinds of interesting nooks and stuff to explore. I found myself slowing down just to appreciate how well done an area was. Plus when you complete a non city zone you get some snazy xp and bonus items.

If you see a named NPC, try talking to them. Some will give you some color for the area, and some will even have chances for you to gain charm/aggression/dignity points.

Btw, if anyone didn't know, you can see your personality levels in your Hero screen--mouse-over your profession icon.

I like the Vistas because the reward for 100% a zone is enough to give incentive to do so without being such that it's mandatory on subsequent characters. In TOR, Datacrons were a cool idea, but the cumulative bonus they provided made them feel like too much of a necessity. In the end, they felt too much like grinding out something you had to have instead of a neat reward for exploring.

I just went with where the people I converse with regularly went. Feel free to add me as a friend, though. I don't know if guesting is in yet, but you should be able to do everything with cross-server buddies except WvW, IIRC.

Yeah, I've been representing the ZAM guild pretty much 100% of the time. My guild from WoW has enough hard core players that it doesn't need me in terms of points and stuff. Our guild obviously does lol.

Right now the main problem I'm having is trying to figure out which character I want to play as my main. I'm getting frustrated with the Elementalist because it seems overly complicated. So I want to try something a bit easier first, while I get the hang of the game. And hopefully something a bit less squishy. So I'm thinking I'll probably focus on my Engineer or Necromancer for a while.

I'm really liking Guardian. I've settled into sword & torch on one set, with sword & shield as my offset.

I've been ******* around on Warrior, too, since it feels more productive to level that while mining copper than it does going on my mid-30's Guardian to lower-level areas to do so.

I tried WvW (I do enjoy the vocalization of it as 'wub wub' that I've heard people using), and I can see where it'll be fun. I was getting just smashed to bits far too often for it to remain fun at the time, so I stopped 'til I figure out a better build for it. I think I played for around two hours and only got one token out of it, so I'm obviously not doing anything right. I then tried to go off and get some Vistas, Skill Points, and PoI, but would consistently get destroyed anytime I strayed.

They really need to let you converse with the guilds you aren't representing though. I spend most of my time representing the Zam guild (because yeah, we need it), but I joined another social guild. But I only pop over there if the Zam guild is empty and I'm not doing something that would give us influence, which isn't much time.

It really wouldn't be hard to let us chat with them. I don't see any good reason it would be prohibited.

Might be tricky to implement though. As it stands now, it's like with any other MMO, you just type /g and can talk in guild chat. How would they make it so you can choose which guild to talk to? I agree it'd be a neat feature, but it might be hard to get set up.

I don't think it would be that hard. Make an ordered list of the guilds a player is in, and cap the number of guilds at 9. Or at least the number you can place on the list at 9.

/g automatically chats to the guild you are representing.

/1-/9 each chat with that guild on the list (one of which will be the one you represent).

You can toggle chat on and off in the guild pane.

They've already coded in the on/off system in the represent option, so that won't be hard. Hell, it's probably more of a "hide" option than anything else.

I doubt it would be hard to implement at all, tbh. They probably already use an ordered system for guilds internally, just to organize them in their own files/the guild pane. I bet they even use it with the represent system to pick which of the guilds you belong to doesn't get filtered.

It should actually be really easy to implement, because they are just chat channels. They don't have to deal with any of the other aspects of a guild, like influence, etc. That's build into representing. Those channels already exist, all they need is an interface to let players toggle them, rather than doing so automatically.

This game is totally Skyrimming me.

So I decide to level my alt Ranger so I can gather more t1 mats for huntsman and leather working on my thief. Simple enough right. Just mostly ignore stuff and try to focus on gathering mats. Wait there's an event. I'll just do that real quick. Hey a view point! Hop Hop Hop. Oh a skill point. Pew Pew Pew. Oh there is some copper. I should really tame an aquatic pet. Scour the entire watery area of Sylvari starting zone.... no aquatic pets. Wait WTF was I doing again?

Well, I got the game and rolled a female Asura Guardian, because cute, tiny, womenz who bring the hurt are awesome. I played a bit and it didn't grab me, it reminded me too much of my Guild Wars (1) experience - search around for a quest giver, finally find a quest, search around for quest MoBs or quest area, get killed by MoBs way higher than me while I search around, rinse and repeat.

Friday night I decided to give it another go and rolled a Human Thief. Oh! Nice! Much more intuitive area. Now the Asura area makes sense to me also. Meanwhile, rolled a Norn Warrior and a Sylvari Ranger (I'm assuming everyone has one of these, or will - they are all over the place). Now, I feel like Shojindo, the game is definitely Skyrimming me -

Yeah, me too. By the time I rolled my Norn Warrior I didn't even look for quests, just ran around gathering, joining events, and if I wandered into a quest area and the quest looked interesting I did it. Doing this, I found that for the first time (four different areas) I've competed everything in the original area (not sure if I'm about to leave the starting area yet, I've never gotten that far yet!).

And naming. Wow, all the names I want are taken. I guess it's because they have to have unique names for everyone since you can cross servers and group? Or am I just having bad luck?

Man, don'cha hate when your crafting ends a few points shy of the next tier? Not sure whether to go kill weenies and hope for drops or keep on where I am and hope for goodies. I'm really getting blocked on the blues off critters rather than the other mats. Which is good, since I can't get gathering nodes for leatherworking. Guess I'm fighting skinless bears most of the time.

For other Rangers looking for pets in the area rather than specific ones, Karija on SomethingAwful took all the info and turned it around to be useful.

You can put spaces in names... from the wiki:

The last step is to choose a name for your character, which can include from 3 to 19 characters. Names must be composed entirely of letters and (optional) spaces; names always use title case (i.e. the first letter of each word is capitalized) and must begin with a letter.

For non-space characters, the English versions of the game allow the standard 26 letters of the alphabet along with accented letters such as à and è. The German version also allows the usage of Ä, Ö and Ü; [verification requested] the requirements for other languages are currently unknown.

...so that should help you a little bit (first / last names) . When I made my sylvari her name is actually "Dyadem of the Trees" ...quite long but definitely unique.
