A brief opportunity to play for pre-purchasers:

Quote:
We’ll be conducting a stress test on Monday May 14 from 11 AM to 6:00 PM PDT (-7 GMT).

This special test event is open only to Pre-Purchase customers who have registered their accounts. With your help, we can conduct important tests and address some of the issues we identified during our first Beta Weekend Event. During this event, all you need to do is play normally with a new or existing character on your Beta account using the same game client. Please note that since this is a stress test of our servers, you may experience some in-game performance issues. If you’ve pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 and wish to participate in the stress test, we recommend that you register the account and download the game client.

Pre-Purchase customers, log in to the Beta Forums for more information and/or to download the Beta client if needed.

Always for pre-purchasers. Smiley: mad

Also, if they haven't announced the release date, why are they doing stress tests?

I dunno, trying to resolve a known issue, or check whether it's resolved? Anyway how stressful can the stress test be, on a Monday afternoon?

Edit: As for it being for the pre-purchasers, they have to throw us some sort of bone, considering we gave them a small pile of money in exchange for... occasional stress tests. :)

If I had to guess, I'd say it's because they're doing what every other MMO developer should be doing...they're holding off on offering a release date until they're confident that they're going to be able to launch the product they want to launch. Instead of giving a concrete release date and then finding out after that they're going to have to sacrifice launch quality to meet that date, they're testing, identifying issues, fixing them, testing some more, and then when they feel they're on track, they'll give the date.

Something tells me this will be one of those games where all of a sudden we'll get a release date and it will be 4-6 weeks after the date is announced

Lordy, I hope so. I'm not playing anything else right now - the GW2 beta sort of killed me for other games with its shiny newness - and I'm being forced to use my down time to read.

inorite?

The game seems reasonably polished already, but obviously we saw some things in the first pre-purchase BWE that would have been heavily criticized all over the place if they had been in the game at launch. (I think the big one would have been groups with members getting split across different overflow servers and things like that.) That's sort of why I don't expect ANet to announce a launch date 3-6 months out like you see with some other games. Some studios announce a date and then try to get their game ready to meet it. Others get their game ready and then announce a date.

Release dates work fine as long as they are realistic and motivated by what needs to get done, not by what date the company wants the game out. TOR's launch was amazingly smooth and that release date had been set long before stress tests began. Cata's launch was at the opposite end--Blizz set the release date, then cut content and released a shabby product.

The problem with not releasing any info is that it keeps them from really hyping the game. That has me worried that it won't get the kind of attention at launch that it will need to really take off.

The business side often sets release dates based on sales potential. So one game might have been done months already but they are saving it for the holiday rush. Or another game they need to boost 3rd quarter profits so come hell or high water you will be releasing whatever you have on this date.

If they are really holding off for the purposes of making the best darn product possible that would be commendable, but I suspect that part is decided by a different team.

I would suspect ANet already has a tentative internal date in mind but they're not releasing it in case it takes longer than anticipated to get the game to where they want it. The rumor mill is going with June 26th of this year, but as we all know, it doesn't mean anything until the announcement comes directly from the devs.

Pretty much this. The game already has a lot of polish on it, but it could still do with some more. I wouldn't call it ready for release just yet, though I would say it's close enough that a release date is likely planned internally. They just don't want to announce it yet.

What teacake would do without her required massive list of hairstyles and clothing options, I have no idea.

Well, there's this one obscure Korean f2p that is still in closed Alpha. But I'm working on it.

I don't require a massive list, just some good ones. :) Human hairstyles in GW2 stink. The Nord have great ones, but a Nord in the caster clothes, especially the starting ones, looks like Brienne of Tarth in a tutu.

Well, I dunno how that went for anyone else, but in my case it was all stress, no test. What a mess. Could barely play between crashes, freezes, lags, magical instance resets, and stopped loading screens. Bummer.
#18 May 15 2012 at 8:33 AM Rating: Decent
I didn't have any noticeable issues with lag, crashes, or resets, but I did start to get the dreaded 95% loading screen issue towards the end of the test. I managed to gain a couple of levels on my warrior and push her weaponsmithing from 71 to 125. Did some DEs in Shiverpeaks that I hadn't done before and got killed by a lot of Drudge. Those guys are mean.

Looking forward to the next BWE.
