I accidentally did my taxes ten days ago. Not that I'm getting much back, I have mine set up properly, so the government isn't getting much in the way of interest free loans out me. If I didn't have so many games I haven't played yet, I'd get in on Ni No Kuni. It will just have to wait until I've cleared the backlog.

Not trying to rain on any ones parade but I hope Dead Space 3 flops like a lead balloon. Making a 60 dollar game with a "freemium" option seems very underhanded and its getting out of control. 10 years ago, extra costumes and cheats were built into the game not pay us extra. EA seems to try doing this with everything now days.

For those who arent aware, You can now craft weapons in Dead Space and to do so you collect parts/currency to make said weapons in game. When you enter the "Shop" it advertises buying currency and parts with real money(You know because you already paid for the game once) to "speed up the process" but the problem and my counter argument to that is the balance needed for a freemium game is so strict to make it fun, most F2P games have a hard time hitting it. Let alone a game YOU ALREADY PAID for intentionally restricting drops to make paying more for "convenience" seem like they were being nice.

And I know the argument could be made "Well its balanced around solo play through not needing help" but then whats the point of it being there. EA wants to make money so you know for a fact they are going to nerfed drops in the game just enough thats its doable but just frustrating enough to make some people pay.

Lately I've just been getting so frustrated on how I see the game industry going. I miss my PS1/2 days back before all this, locked on disk content, cut pieces out to sell you later, and the omfg must spend millions of dollars to make a good game mentality. So now we get shoehorned into few AAA games, which are mostly sequels, all for the sake of "progress".

Back in those days there was TONs of games every month, some AAA some unknown. Some crap some hidden gems. Honestly the years of hidden gem games seem far behind us, because small and startup studios cant afford to make Super huge ultra graphics and all the systems needed to play on a PS3 HD platform or afford the licence fees to publish them on a home console, which is just saddening.
(Example: Katamari Damacy (SP) I found out about this game at a shop via word of mouth, when you try explaining it, it sounds extremely stupid. But playing it it's fun as all heck, even if simple" How many Katamais like games (Minor budget hidden gems) have you seen this console generation?)

I'm waiting to see which game is going to be "E.T" for Atari and break the gamers back. Unfortunately at this current time because of so many COD kiddies and the like, I just dont see it happening.

(Sorry for the mini rant, I just start typing sometimes and can't stop til I get it out :s )
(BTW I know I know PC master race, but until I can get my JRPG fix, which lately is part of that ****** Big budget, big studio only mentality ((SE how you've fallen)) consoles will have a spot for me as a gamer)

Tera Online goes FTP on Feb 5th. Anyone with a paid copy of the game (regardless of subscription) before then gets Founders status.

Amazon has it on sale for $10 so if you have any interest at all, I guess now is your last chance.

The game has a great combat system, but everything else about is cookie cutter MMO. It's more like playing an action game than a MMO. But then the quests, the story, the items, and the grind are classic MMO.
#1462 Feb 04 2013 at 10:14 AM Rating: Good
Yeah I enjoyed it because warrior combat style is really fun and parts of the world are pretty. But endgame was like some terrible grind of the same two 5 mans in hard mode for junk armor pieces that qualified to be used as mats to try and +15 or whatever you gear. But after +5 ish most of the time it just failed over and over and you lose the mats.

No thanks.

Worth playing for free though just to dink around with the combat system if you have never tried it though.

Kinda bummed that the Amazon pre-order $20 credit wasn't for the PC download of Dead Space 3, just the physical PC, PS3, and 360 copies, but considering I still have to finish up some other stuff anyway, it's no skin off my nose to have to wait that second day to get it. I ended up going for it. A $20 Amazon credit is almost as good as just getting the game for $40 anyway, at least to me. I'm looking forward to it. While I thought the first game rode the line between action and survival horror fairly well, the second leaned a bit further towards action horror. I'm sure the third will be in the same vein as that, or even further into the action genre. I'd certainly prefer if it were more like the original game, but I'm fairly certain it'll be an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

I know everyone is all about the "rah rah I hate EA games" but whatever. I understand all the arguments about Origin, and while it's not great right now, neither was Steam when it first launched, yet people openly embrace their form of voluntary DRM. Day 1 DLC doesn't bother me. I've yet to play a game where it felt incomplete without purchasing Day 1 DLC, or heck any DLC at all. Now, I'll put it out there that I haven't played ME3 and I know there were issues with that, so I'll reserve judgement until I get around to it.

I wonder if there'll come a day when you can trade your games in to Sony or Microsoft, instead of Gamestop, where you can get PSN/Microsoft points at a greater value than trading in used will get you. It would allow them to remove some used copies from circulation, while also generating more sales on their own networks. Ultimately this could result in a repackaging of "re-certified" used games, which could include some fraction of the original purchase bonuses intact.

ETA: I'm not saying that I don't understand why people hate EA, I just don't care enough to not buy one of their titles if it's something I want, for the sake of making a point. Especially since realistically my own personal decision to purchase or not purchase their products has no impact.

Spoon, sorry If I made it sound like an attack directly on EA (which it sort of is). I have no real issue with the company overall, but ANY company that would put micro transactions to a game, ruining its balance, and still charging full price. Mike B just uploaded a video explaining why he's refusing to play it also I'll embed that lower also if you want to see it.

Some of it doesn't pertain to most users, the monetization of LPers but I feel he makes some good points about why I dislike the ideas being placed in the game.

Sorry If I came out all RA RA Hate EA, and while I dislike Origin, the point behind my stupid rant was more of "this is the direction games overall are going and I really need to say something"

Of all my Steam games, their DRM has kept me from playing once, which was quickly corrected. Of the few EA games I own, their DRM has kept me from playing multiple times. I'm actually skipping SimCity both as a **** You to EA, but also because I typically play that type of game when I travel, which their DRM specifically prevents me from doing.

I'm not upset if someone attacks EA. I said I understand it. If you go on big social sites like Reddit, you'll see there's a lot of basically "does anybody else hate EA?" type of posts.

I only have the Mass Effect games and Dragon Age on Origin, and I've never had any trouble playing them. Perhaps I've been lucky. Steam is much better now than it originally was, and the only issues I've had in years was trying to play a game that hadn't been updated, while not on the internet. From what I understand, offline mode is much more streamlined than it used to be, though I've had no cause to use it.

I agree with Rao's stance on SimCity. I'm not a fan of always-on DRM. Ubisoft has used it in the past (Anno 2070) and I thought it was bad. Blizzard has it for D3 and it's stupid there. I also won't be buying SimCity, primarily because of the always-online DRM, and some of the lowest common denominator gameplay pandering that goes hand-in-hand with forcing everyone to play online in conjunction with one another. Most of all, not being able to revert to a previous save takes all the fun out of ending a play session by unleashing all the disasters on your city. I think forcing a game that I always thought of as a more solitary gaming experience to be a slave to an internet connection is a terrible design choice, and sure I'll blame EA for that.

I don't know. I don't particularly like EA. I don't like a lot of their practices. I guess I'm just saying that I don't care enough to not buy their products if it's something I'm interested in.

I don't necessarily hate the idea of microtransactions, depending on how they're implemented. He makes it seem like they're used in a way I would not like, which is where they basically have a way the game is "meant" to be played, and they lessen that experience and then put these microtransactions in there in order for you to be able to play it in the intended fashion. It's largely a psychological thing, like when a Day 1 DLC is physically on a disc and everyone is up in arms because they'd have to pay in order to gain access to it. It doesn't matter if it was actually cut and reshaped into DLC or not, it feels like it was. Anyway, if the game can be played through reasonably well without participating in these microtransactions, I'm pretty fine with it. If I feel like I have to use them in order to beat the game, I'll have a problem with it. I don't have a problem with DLC weapons and armor packs, and I don't have a problem with other people spending real money to beat the game; I've never felt that sense of competition with other people over a single-player campaign.

The whole console port issue doesn't really bother me. It's a business decision. The statement that they want to have the same experience across all versions is pretty ********* What it boils down to is that putting additional development time into a proper PC port was not determined to be necessary enough to retain whatever PC market they project. While I don't have a super gaming PC, mine is sufficient enough to play most games at High+ levels (probably not Ultra on newer releases). While it does look much better than console textures and whatnot, being stuck with console-quality textures isn't something that'll turn me away from a game. I routinely play games from 10-15 years ago, and I don't need to mod the **** out of the stock textures in order to enjoy my time. That's not to say that a person is wrong if that's sufficient cause for them to not buy a game; I wouldn't ever tell someone they enjoy or don't enjoy something for wrong reasons. I'm just saying that being a console port doesn't really bother me.

I agree with everything you said about Sim City. After initially being interested I've decided not to buy. However, origin is part of the reason.

My main beef with origin is I don't want another game portal. It annoys me to even use steam, but it was practically unavoidable (well I wanted to play Civ V and didn't notice it required steam until I had already bought it), so I have it now. I don't want another bloody games portal. I understand why EA wants to be a special snowflake and have their own portal but I am simply not interested. I would definitely have bought the dragon age games by now if they didn't require origin.

It's like how I hate how ebooks all require different bloody ereaders and some are only available in one place, some in another. It irritates me to no end.

I had $10 loose in my gaming budget so decided to get in on Founders. Your analysis of it seems right on. The combat was pretty fun even with a sorcerer (fireball, fireball, fireball, fire column, backspin!) but the basics of it are stock MMORPG. Go talk to that NPC who wants 5 mobs killed, go collect ten widgets from widget-monsters, here's a new robe, here's some new shoes, etc.

I forgot how god-awful male models are in these Japanese styled games. All of my characters are female except for one male demon guy who looks like a 70's glam rock reject. The chubby woodland animals and bunny girls make my Western MMORPG soul cringe.

As long as it's free from here on out, I'll doodle around in the world when I want a stock MMORPG fix. It's nothing to write home about but it's nothing aggressively bad either. I'm not a big end-game raiding person these days so I'll probably just wind up with a handful of characters in the mid levels before my interest just wanes completely.

One thing to note. Most character's don't get some of their most signature abilities until 28-30 ish. Although the beginner stuff on N00b island is fun to play with sticking with a character a bit longer will give you a better feel for how they will shine later. The combat gets pretty twitch and dynamic. That more than anything kept me playing later on. it did not matter if I was killing 10 bumblesmucks in sector 7, it was more about killing them with style and efficiency.

Especially when it comes to fighting BAM's solo or in smaller than called for groups. Timing and spacing become everything. It's the old paradigm though take a game with great combat + great story telling + great endgame and you got the Triforce MMO. Most of them seem to have only 1 or 2 of the 3.

GOG is going to release System Shock 2 tomorrow morning, no word on the price yet.

Also Dead Space 3 is good, despite the microtransactions and the Zerg-rushing necros all over the place.

Huh I've beat that game twice back in the day. Not sure if I want to spring for it a 3rd time. Wonder if anything is added or improved to make it worth buying again. The Screens they have up look a tad cleaner but they always will on PC, and I'm not seeing anything about "improved performance". I want to pre-order it but I dont want to deal with a ****** console port, I would rather just play it on console.

Mainly I use my console to play Jrpgs, and Console only games and my Pc for everything else.

Steam is celebrating the release of Steam on Linux by discounting select games (read: the only ones that can run on Linux) by 50% - 75%.

Yeah... The Ouya will probably end up with a better selection since it runs Android, so there should be plenty of adaptations of tablet/phone games. Though, to be honest, without AAA support, I don't see either as more than a supplementary console.

Heck, at least Gameloft has those AAA knock-off Android titles like Modern Combat, NOVA and Asphalt. Port those for Ouya and you'd have some quasi-credible console game play (at least for the comparatively low cost vs a similar 360/PS3 title).

If you're fast, persistent and lucky, there's a number of the AMD "Never Settle" promo cards on eBay for Bioshock: Infinite + Tomb Raider or B:I + Crysis 3. I managed to pick up Bioshock: Infinite & Tomb Raider for about 65% off MSRP on the set.

I couldn't figure out what you were talking about until it occurred to me that you're looking to get Crysis 3.

You can also check out FREE2PlayBundle or type in Planetside 2/World of Tanks/Hawken. I recently upgraded my Vid card and I didnt know but if you buy a 660 or better Nvidia will send you a Code for 50 dollar credit in each of those games. (a quick check on Ebay showed one for 70 bucks which is kind of a savings)

Thats why I was asking about Hawken in the other thread I was considering giving them a code for 50 bucks in game currency(only if they were an actual player not someone just wanting a 50 dollar credit), but since no one really said anything I went and contacted a few people about using it as a prize.I surprised one of my friends IRL who plays World of Tanks all the time with that code, and I used the Planetside 2 code myself. (The Planetside 2 is 50 pure Station Cash so technically it could be used for any SOE game I think)

Gonna dirty up this thread with some Console garbage.

The Final Fantasy Classics are 50% off on the PSN, have been for some time, because of the 25th anniversary. 1+2 (Single Game), 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and Tactics. $4.99 each.

I think it started on the 4th, and was for two weeks. So it's nearing the end, probably this weekend being the last.

Edit:
Turns out 4 is not on that $4.99 list. Instead 4 is only available as a PSP/Vita download, and it is the "Complete" edition which has FF4, and the After Years (which I actually thought was Wii only, but turns out PSP has it too). But that one is priced at $9.99. Apparently full price is 20 dollars...

So on that list is also some PSP/Vita only games:

Dissidia
Dissidia 012
Dissidia 012 Prologus
FFT: PSP release
FF4 Complete

Also for the next 2 weeks all Namco games are 50% off on PSN (maybe select not sure) I picked up One Piece: Pirate Warriors for 24.99, I saw Tekken 6 and Noby Noby boy and I think Touch my Katamari on sale also.

As for the Final Fantasy sale, yeah its the 25th Anniversery of the series so eerything on PSN is 50% off. Honestly I would stay away from the NES/SNES ports as they have terrible lag (exception is 5 I think) and nothing added really gameplay wise (Beastilery and Jukebox don't count)

I'm a huge fan of the FF series but only picked up FF8 and 9 (I already own FF7 on disk(x2) and PC) and FFT: War of The Lions refresh (with the slowdown patch homebrew) for PSP.

If you liked FF4 the complete version is pretty nice IMHO if you own a PSP. Not the greatest but yeah.

Ya, I bought The After Years for the Wii.

As for the slowdown of the ports, I bought the original discs for the PS1 back when they came out, and knew about the slowdown, but I always assumed that had to do with loading data off the disk. Wouldn't the slowdown be less with the downloaded version on the PS3 hard drive?

/shrug, quite possible there is no slowdown, but I don't feel like risking 5 bucks when I already have them on my PC, and IMHO they look better XD.
