Hey guys, I was just curious of what RPG games are out there that are multiplayer. My girlfriend and I are looking for another RPG to get into together, and we're not too sure what it is just yet. Not so much looking for another MMORPG this time around, but if you guys could throw out some suggestions, that'd be awesome, doesn't matter what system, just throw out whatever you have. Thanks!

Here are some of the multiplayer RPGs that we've played and enjoyed;

The 'Tales Of' series
Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu 3
White Knight Chronicles
FFXI
WoW
Sacred 2
The Buldar's Gate games
Borderlands (I know its not really a RPG, but meh)
Eternal Sonata
Demon's Souls/Dark Souls

I didn't realize that White Knight Chronicles and Eternal Sonata were multiplayer.

There is apparently a White Knight Chronicles 2

I just realized, the multiplayer in White Knight, that Georama thing? That was pretty interesting. I think I'll have to power up White Knight Chronicles again (I never did finish it...)

Yep you got it, you go on quests online in WKC (we already have the second one as well). I think it's good fun, a nice piece that they didn't really have to add.

Eternal Sonata had a 'kind of' multiplayer I guess you could put it haha, very similar to the Tales of series, just that each character had to wait their turn, it was all in good fun though.

DC universe and Everquest 2 are free to play now so you might as well give them a whirl if you haven't tried them yet. Everquest 2 plays fairly similar to Wow. I really enjoyed that game early on but last time I tried to play it I just didn't enjoy it that much.

If you haven't tried it yet Star Wars The Old Republic is pretty good. It is VERY similar to wow as far as the GUI and controls/combat goes. Unlike most MMORPG games this one has a fun class story that, as far as I know, you continue to do all the way to max level (correct me if I am wrong on that one). Only downside there are no free trials so you will have to drop 50+ to try this one out.

If you can find a copy somewhere the old school Phantasy Star online had multi-player in offline mode split screen.

Phantasy star zero and portable both have free to play online multi-player features as well.

I have a hard time recommending phantasy star universe in it's current state.

Some of the earlier FF games have limited multiplayer. In FF9 at least you can have someone else control half the party in battles.

There are private servers that run old school PSO in all its glory, 100% free.

The most popular being schthack and edenserv

the multiplayer in phantasy star portable could be okay, I guess - the trouble I had is

a) communication sucks
b) it is pretty impossible to get people around your level to play with so you end up having some level 100 steamroll stuff for you... meh

It did make me excited for the future possibilities of portable online play though.

Well mezz was asking for mutli-player rpgs for him and his girlfriend. Speaking as someone who loves himself some pso I can assure you they will get a lot out of the game with just the two of them. Presumably they will be playing with each other close by and the chat issue will not be a problem either.:)

oh yeah then that would be awesome. Seriously. The game is a lot of fun, and if you both have psp I think you can multiplayer without net even (would have to check that, I haven't done it... but there is two multiplayer modes I believe)

from my experience with PS-portable 2 I will probably check out the new phantasy star online game they are putting out, give it a shot. I would love it if they remastered the early (Sega) games - I bought them as part of the sega collection on PSP & Phantasy Star collection on GBA - but they could use improved sprites and sharper backgrounds (would love to see them get the same facelift Final Fantasy 1,2, and 4 got on the PSP) straight emulation doesn't do them justice.

One of these days I need to break down and get a psp just to play that game(And dissidia). I absolutely loved phantasy star Zero though. I liked all the boss fights. And beating the final boss on hard with a ******* pizza had to be one of my most favorite memories in the series. I always loved the fun photon arts. Especially the Invisible stair case one with the wand. Or rodeo drive. Riding my staff like a cow Hoo-wa!

I know for sure the DS one has a derict multi-player.

I know I'm bumping a 3-week old thread here, but I thought I'd add "Borderlands", because it fits the concept of having multiplayer play available like FPS multiplayer (which is essentially what the game is), but it also has RPG elements. The OP did say "not necessarily "MMORPG", which gave me the impression he didn't really want another MMOG.

I don't consider it to be a great game in many ways - I've said that if World of Warcraft is the "delivery pizza" of MMOGs, then Borderlands is the Twinkie of them; they both have great elements that make them fun to play, Borderlands has even less depth in its content. Still, who doesn't love pizza and Twinkies (not necessarily at the same time :D )? My complaints about Borderlands hasn't stopped me from playing it for hundreds of hours (generally when I'm taking a break from whatever MMOG I'm playing regularly).

;)
