I can't wait for Thursday night. I want this game, dammit.

Apparently, a bunch of stores have released early, not realizing that it was coming out on 11/11/11 rather than Tuesday, like most games. It's taking all of my willpower to remember that I have a pre-order at gamestop and, as such, should wait instead of raiding various stores.

So, what will everyone be playing their first time through? Here's a link to the race bonuses in Skyrim.

I'm having a ton of trouble with this question. I really can't decide (and if that continues to be the case, I'll end up as an Imperial, because their increased gold from chests will definitely be useful). I might go with Nord, though. Or Breton.

...

Crap. I don't do well with options. Smiley: frown

I'm partial to the Redguard, mostly because I usually employ the Sword & Board style of combat. Saving that, I usually played a dark elf in Morrowind, all the better to sneak around and steal stuff.

I'll go with "Whichever model looks the best after fiddling around with the character creation system for the first seven plus hours." I don't think I'm going to get any sleep this weekend...

Imma go with Nord. First, because Vikings are awesome. Second, because blue facepaint/tattoos are awesome. Third, because it just seems right, given the setting.

I'm torn about class options, though, so I might end up as a bit of a jack-of-all trades type. I'm pretty sure I'd like to make a thief-y assassin type, but I'll also probably want good archery, and the magic is looking pretty darn cool too. And yet, somehow, I always seem to end up as a tank-spec'd warrior in these games.

I'll probably just wing it, picking and choosing things that seem cool and effective as I get a better feel for how the game plays.

They've made some cool changes to both those classes.

Dark Elves can surround themselves with fire, that will burn nearby enemies. Should be entertaining if you end up in a crowd. And it looks like it'll do nearly 500 damage over it's duration. Much better than the crappy ancestor summon.

Redguards get the ability to really ramp up their stam regeneration (so you can take attacks with your shield while swinging like crazy). They also get to resist poison.

I have 25 pages of research-intensive writing to complete by Tuesday. I'm not thrilled by the timing. D:

Also, Nord get cold resist (useful against Frost dragons) and the ability to unleash a warshout that sends all your enemies running in terror. :D

With the posting of this thread, the productivity of this heavily loaded week of work has just dropped tremendously.

In all TES games, I find my characters always tend to a sword swinging, invincible tank since that's fast and easy, but I'll try to start out as a thief with a little bit of magic blended in. Without stats and (hopefully) no leveling problems, there shouldn't really be a need to pay attention to how my skills progress this time around.

One of my fav characters in Oblivion was my Nord SnB heavy. That guy was beast. I'll probally recreate that guy first.

Then second will be a Dunmer Dark Elf Bow/Assasin Brotherhood type of character.

I'm undecided on my mage though.

I got Friday off for Vet's day. So yeah marathon Skyrim session inc! I can't wait. I'll probally tool around a lot on my first toon exploring and avoiding the main quest. Then jump back into the main quest once I am beefy. That is if it plays anything like Oblivion with the open spelunking of dungeons in every direction. :)

My first Oblivion playthrough ended up with a set of full chameleon, backstabbing everything in sight. It was fun, but way too easy. I'm hoping that this isn't even possible this time, especially since they've revamped stealth anyway.

I know it's true that I could just not do it, but I'm way too tempted by sanctioned god modes. XD

I'm interested in their changes to archery. They gave bows some kind of melee attack or counter-attack, so you aren't doomed if your enemy reaches you. And the slow-time of aiming might be enough to make it really fun.

Are people planning to go for all guilds with their toons, or spread them out?

In Oblivion, I originally did everything. And it felt really weird being the archmage, the head of the Fighter's guild, head of the Thieves' guild, head of the Dark Brotherhood, and a member of the <insert king's knights name I can't remember>. Oh yeah, and champion of the arena...

This time around, I'm going to limit the number of guilds my character will do. I'll be an assassin, and operate in another guild for cover (for example). Something "respectable." And I'll probably arbitrarily cap my advancement.

I tend to stick to a theme in these games. Even if it becomes possible to be a Magic wielding, Heavy plate wearing, Sheild, archer, full ninja I won't generally do it. Some things I can see like using a bit of shadow magic or illusion as a thief. Or healing yourself some as a paladin like character.

So my Nord was head of the fighters guild. And my thief went down the Dark Brotherhood chain as well as Grey Fox. My Mage went head of the mages guild etc.

Part of the fun for me is creating new builds and character concepts so doing it all on one toon is not as fun to me.

My Vampire Mage for example(not the same one as was head of the guild) was a concept that was fun until I just decided it was too much of a PITA if I mistimed a dungeon crawl and came out in full day with no where to feed. XD

Ohh I forgot to say my rogue type did not rely on full chameleon. I used it very sparingly. Partially becuase it annoyed me to not see my hands/bow, and partly becuase it was game breaking.

I think it's fine as long as absolute chameleon is impossible. It's nice to think that you could put a magic affect on gear that helps you meld into shadows or something. But maybe that's how it should work (like, in situations where stealth is impossible, you just can't evade detection).

Hmm, probably will end up making a couple different characters. A orc sword and board with possible two hander for giggles. A Khadjiit for my stealth and Altmer for my mage. That is when I get some extra cash to buy the game. A bit tight on funds right now so I have to sit on my laurels until I can buy it. :*(

The game has been bought, Friday has been taken off of work, and I've got a good supply of beverages and snacks on hand. I just need to get through the next two days of work, then take a reasonable nap Thursday evening.

As to the game itself, I haven't decided at all what race to go with. I'll probably go with some random human looking guy. It's not like I'm ever going to really be looking at my character, so I'm not too particularly interested in appearances. The initial stat bonuses really don't matter once you've put a few levels on, so the only thing to really be interested in is the racial ability. As to that, I haven't looked into the game enough to make a solid choice. I've actually been doing as much as I can to avoid knowing much about the game. I watched the twenty minutes of game play Bethesda dropped a couple months back, but that's it. I'm looking for my first play through to be fairly untainted.

Racial bonuses (passive or active powers, not listing skill bonuses):

Altmer: +50 Magicka and tenfold magicka regeneration for 60 seconds.

Argonian: water breathing, 50% resist to Disease, tenfold health regeneration for 60 seconds.

Bosmer: 50% resist to Disease and Poison, ability to command an animal to help you for 60 seconds.

Breton: 25% magic resistance, absorb 50% magicka from hostile spells for 60 seconds.

Dunmer: 50% resist to Fire, ability to shroud themselves with fire for 60 seconds (8 dps).

Imperial: Increased gold from containers, ability to calm nearby enemies for 60 seconds.

Khajiit: Claw attacks (+15 in hand to hand), improved night vision for 60 seconds.

Nord: 50% resist to Frost, ability to send a target running for 30 seconds.

Orc: Deal double damage and take half for 60 seconds.

Redguard: 50% resist to Poison, tenfold stamina regeneration for 60 seconds.

Quick and easy analysis of skills:
Traditional archer skillset: Bosmer (Ranger), Khajiit (all-range thief)
Traditional sword-and-board warrior skillset: Imperial
Rounded warrior skillset: Redguard
Two-handed warrior skillset: Nord
Traditional thief skillset: Argonian
Traditional mage skillset: Altmer, Breton (Altmer are more offensive, Breton more qdefensive)
Adaptable fighter skillset: Orc (one- or two-handed weapons, block and heavy armor)

All classes get +10 to a major skill, +5 to 5 minor skills. Definitely nothing to make or break any class. But it will change what perks will be immediately available to you. Not a problem if you are willing to sit on perk points.

Either Bosmer, Dunmer, or Khajiit. I prefer to start with a Dark Brotherhood-type character, but want to definitely include archery. How has stealth changed for Skyrim?

There are now 4 "eye" levels. Closed means that they are unaware, partially open means that they know something's out there, almost open means that they are searching for you, an open eye means that the enemy has found you (and at both extremes, you'll get a notice of "hidden" or "detected").

Much better than the yes-or-no nature of the previous games.

They've also made it so that it's much more important to stay in shadows (or, I guess it would be better to say that the game means that shadows are much easier to identify).

And don't forget that they added Sneak perks.

I like the FO3-NV perk system. That should be an interesting way to build. I don't really care about min/max as much usually in single player games. But I usually end up seeing the synergies and building some good stuff anyway. It will be interesting to see how much the game punishes you for terrible builds and whatnot.

I had to play FO NV on hard/hardcore for my second play through to keep it challenging. And even then it was only challenging until I was decked out with good perks. Then I steam rolled again.

I imagine I will play on normal for Skyrim on my first play through anyway until I am comfortable with the new system.

I'm going for a stealthy character.

I hope they haven't made the NPCs quite so touchy about talking to them with weapons drawn. So many times I would end up getting myself in trouble for that. The biggest thing I am hoping for is that the voice acting is more.. reliable? standard? compared to oblivion. Drove me nuts when a beggar started off with like a thick cockney accent and then had no accent at all when they answered a question. Just messed with the flow of the experience imo.

From the "Making Of" trailer, it sounds like there have been huge improvements in the voice acting since that was a complaint of Oblivion that also disturbed the immersion of the game. They have something like 70+ actors doing 110+ voices- oh, and Christopher Plummer has his voice in this game.
