I like Lydia but I wish I could change her AI settings. I want to smack her upside the head and tell if she sees a stream of fire coming from my hands, do not stand between me and the target! She complicates fights so much for my caster character. That and my best spells are AOE so I can't even use them when she and/or the horse is around. Friendly fire is a real problem in this game.

I remember in oblivion, jumping often while traveling. Whirlwind Sprint is the new jump but occasionally guards yell at me about using it.

Agreed; even as melee it sucks, as often the enemies move and companions follow... right into the path of my swing. One potential fix is to give her a bow (or unequip her weapons; she had a default bow), and she'll stay at range. Of course, if she draws aggro you're in trouble again, but that might make it a bit easier.

I do really like that companions usually don't die. From my experience it either takes me dealing the finish blow, or a continuous attack (like a magic spell or dragon breath) for them to snuff it. Otherwise they just kneel down and catch their breath for a bit.

Anyone know, if you give them potions, if they'd use them? I'd assume now, but that might be worth it.

I never figured out how to manually have a companion equip stuff. There didn't seem to be that option in their inventory menu. I've been running without a companion ever since Lydia died, and frankly I haven't missed them at all. I'm working on smithing so I can make better armor and then I shouldn't need a tank at all.

You just give them the item to hold. If it's better than what they have (or their default), they equip it automatically. Lydia's equipment is all steel, for example; you'd need to give her something higher than that if you want her to equip it.

I've read that you can. And you cast heal others on her.

I just realized my problem with filling the Black Star. I hadn't been casting Soul Trap on enemies, I had been casting it before engaging as if it were a buff on me. That was silly of me Smiley: lol.

Spell casting is fun in this game. Much more fun than melee combat, in my opinion (haven't really tried archery, so can't comment on that).

Ice Spike holds a special place in my heart. And the heart of my enemies, if you know what I mean. Smiley: sly

I usually leave Lydia home these days. I don't want to have to reload a tough fight I won after I realize she is not just stuck on terrain somewhere.

Was pretty funny the first time, I'm looting the corpses of my fallen enemies and WAITAMINUTE, did I just loot Lydia? Damnit.

I ended up leaving my companions at home in Fallout most of the time too. I liked how in New Vegas you could just leave them all hanging out like the cast of a reality TV show at your Vegas penthouse.

I leave Lydia sitting home all the time. You'd think with all her free time the b***h would have dinner ready. Of course not. Typical woman (jk). I think I'll put her to work on the streets and then check my stats to see how many diseases I contract.

On a serious note, I just started the Companion quest line and did the one with Farkas. Wow, what a long, fun quest. Then I get back to wrap it up and the npc's waiting for me in the back was icing on the cake. Made me feel like me and ol' Farkas did something grand.

At least in Fallout, you had VATS. In Oblivion and probably Skyrim, I end up smacking my companions too much. Martin in Oblivion has tried to kill me sooo many times simply because he got in my way. So as a melee character who can take a few hits, I don't even bother with a companion. I'd be more open to using my housecarl if companions could not die permanently or get angry for taking hits.

Also also, every bit of damage my companion deals/takes means less chance of skill ups for me!

I agree, I really liked that quest. I also like that (as far as I can tell), mandatory quest companions can't die. Farkas and Barbas kept getting owned when I had them with me, but they always just sat down; I never seen saw a health bar on them.

The one good thing about Vigilence (my dog) is that if he dies, I know there's another (Meeko) that I can get. I'm not overly attached to the barking fleabag... although he did solo a bear for me once Smiley: grin

Wh-What? CENTIPEDE THINGS?

Not okay Bethesda, not okay.

And to the melee players here, how are you handling dragons? It's such a PITA to try and shoot them down...

I thought the same thing!! I am not going to be happy to find those; the spiders are scary enough...

I find that, as long as you're out in the open, they circle and land and fight you. It's happened that way with the two I encountered so far, at least.

Ugh, despite being melee, I use my Flames spell on Spiders to do as much damage as I can before I have to get close and see those disgusting pincers...

I haven't had one land yet. Then again, I've only had dragons taunt me so far (fly low, screaming) without actually doing anything. I just want their souls, dammit.

I thought the Companions story line in general was excellent. I just finished it last night. Now I can sleep restfully (and get the buff) again. It was fun being a werewolf in some ways but I rarely remembered to use it and the transform was so slow that I was dead if I tried to do it in combat without pre-loading it.

And Digg you have to **** off the dragons you encounter randomly sometimes. Plink them with your bow even if its not skilled. I mostly fight with SnB but I keep a bow handly for ranged moments like kiting a mammoth or making sure a dragon knows I want to fight him.

If there is high ground you can go to it and sometimes that seems to make them land faster. I have had to chase down a couple dragons that decided to go BBQ a pack of wolves for example. Just try and stick with them and when they land it's stabby time.

They're called Chauruses, and they are a complete pain in the ***.

Remember Clannfears from Oblivion? Kinda like that. They're tough, they hit like a f*cking truck, their bite leaves a poison on you, and they are extremely annoying. The larger ones, called Chaurus Reapers, are slightly smaller than a horse. On my mage character, they can sometimes oneshot me. At level 23.

Whenever I see one, I take no mercy and blast it with every single thing I've got.

On the plus side, they are an excellent thing to raise as a zombie.

That brings me to my next question--what weapon type are people using?

I'm doing one-handed, but can't decide. On the one hand, armor ignore on maces sounds great. But I think I want to use swords, just because I like them more aesthetically. But the whole crit thing is kinda meh to me.

Magic for me. Fireball spam works wonders on just about anything, and if I'm against a particularly powerful spellcaster, I'll break out my Staff of Magnus.

I use swords for the same reason you said, I think they look cool. You don't really have to min/max hard enough to go with an ugly weapon just to get by, at least not on default difficulty. The skyforged sword lasted me a long time after I improved it with smithing. I just finally replaced it recently with an exquisite hand crafted Orc sword.

I put one point in the crit but the bottom of the one hand tree looked more practical. Plus I am now up to sheild bashes in block line and its like dual wielding using my spiked Orc shield (which can stagger then on power bash) and sword. Plus I picked up the passive 50% elemental resistance on sheild talent which is really handy.

I'm really looking forward to the Sprinting shield up knockdown. Smiley: nod

When I had to fight those spiders in the beginning, before I found out you could zoom out to third person view, and even better, shoot stuff dead before it comes near, I looked away and spammed those mouse buttons until the guy I was following (Ralof? Rolaf?) told me to move on.

Another thing is, I'm having a hard time figuring out what quests to do when. I seem to be skipping stuff, or doing it wrong, because I'm not high enough level to be taking on dragons and giants and stuff, but the quests lead me to them.

For instance, the first dragon you kill, to unlock your Shouts, took forever and a few deaths because of my low level and lack of spells and perks. I got the distinct feeling that I had skipped something somewhere, but the game is so nonlinear that I have no idea where to go.
