Ignoring the graphics engine, because going into graphics discussions can get silly, I'd be surprised if the points and gear systems are really all that different from other shooters out there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going quite so far as to say it's the equivalent of a DLC roster update being charged at full game price*. Just that the gameplay of every shooter I've played thus far in the modern generation has felt pretty much the same, and with so little focus on the story, they kinda run together for me.

That's what I love about RPGs. The focus being so heavily on the story, you can release a game with the same exact gameplay and as long as the story's different, it really is a whole new game.

I thought it was: 'ignorance is not an excuse'.

Pold, I agree that RPGs focus a lot more on the story than shooters, but that's exactly why I responded to your post about Modern Warfare. Besides all the technical babble it introduced, it also changed how "modern day" shooters, and other games, are being made today. Modern Warfare's single player campaign was made in an almost cinematic fashion with a lot of focus on the story.

And axhed, what I meant with my previous comment was that games fall into different genres, like music, and just like with music, our tastes in video games vary. I don't think that's ignorance, per se, although my didactic and pedagogy teacher would call it lack of education to summarily dismiss any argument in a discussion.

Boiling Skyrim down to any set of RPG elements would be inherently disingenuous. To give any kind of acceptable set of criteria for defining it, you should really just leave it at the open world system. Skyrim isn't really about leveling up or killing dragons, it's about freedom.

Hmm kick *** swords must go up the Heavy armor side. My Orchish Sword was better than Skyforged. The Hero Nord swords from completing companion chain and burnign the old man on the skyforge. (Unlocks new stuff) are also better than that. My Ebony Sword is waaaaay better than that. So I'm guessing Daedric will be tops if there is no dragon sword. I have not unlocked the dragon armor yet becuase I already feel uber in Ebony for the most part, so I am enjoying it for a while.

Hmm, I still need to check out the upgraded Skyforge stuff, but my original Exquisite Skyforge Waraxe was still a few damage better than an Exquisite Orcish Mace. I just picked up an Ebony sword off a Draugr Dreadlord, and it's still not better than my Exquisite Skyforge Waraxe (and I can't upgrade it quite yet either).

Speaking of one-handed weapons, has anybody gone for a specialization yet? I still think the mace spec looks most useful, followed by sword and then axe. Anybody have any results they can report?

So you have 4 options:

1. Daggers
2. Swords
3. Axes
4. Maces

These are sorted by weapon speed, from fastest to slowest. I'm pretty sure their stamina cost per swing changes too, but I'm not sure (I imagine it's a factor of weapon weight).

Daggers and Swords get a chance to crit, and increased points in that perk buff the chance and the amount it crits for.

Axes add bleed damage, more with increased perks.

Maces will ignore up to 75% of armor.

Axes look useless to me. Well, not "useless" but not super useful either. It depends partly on how long the bleed is. And intense, but short, bleed would be nice. But anything drawn out? Nah. I face too few foes where that would be useful. Add in a slower swing speed and meh.

Maces look solid. 75% armor penetration is great. But they don't see any bonus on unarmored enemies. And IDK what the breakdown is with regards to health and armor with enemies. I imagine Maces are good against a lot of humanoids, but useless for a lot of creatures (like mammoths, giants, bears). It seems to me that Dragon Priests are probably unarmored too, but I have no way of knowing that for sure. Dragons, too--are they armored in game mechanics, or is it just extremely high health? Etc.

Swords are my preference. Crit isn't the best, but it is useful against everything. They have a fast swing speed, but still do good damage. Their kill animations are great. They look best (to me). Plus, their damage bonus is exponential. Armor penetration is great, but I imagine that unit armor isn't going to increase forever. Once you start getting really good weapons, I'm guessing swords will outpace Maces on all but the most heavily-armored foes.

But its differences(story and whatnot) are differences where it actually matters to the primary consumers of the game. I haven't found shooters to really change all that much in their multiplayer experience, which I'm pretty sure is what most people buy FPSs for.

That's a matter of perspective, though. As an avid shooter fan, I see huge differences in the experience of different games. Halo is quite unlike Battlefield is unlike Call of Duty, etc. etc.

The experiences vary greatly depending on, say, how much health you're afforded, what type of weapons/vehicles exist and how they handle, what gameplay modes are available, and what progression exists. I don't play Battlefield like how I play Call of Duty at all. One is a macro, team-oriented experience, while the other is a micro, twitchy, more solo affair.

XKCD really summed it up best.

It's all just about how deep your experience goes.

He woke at daybreak to the snow gently falling to the ground, in the distance he could barely recognize the other apartment buildings from the foggy haze the snow creates. He reached for my usual weapon of choice, a cup of folder's dark roast coffee brewed strong from the magical contraption known as a Mr. Coffee. As he felt the warm embrace of Mara's own nectar embrace his tongue, the surge of the ancient language spilled from his mouth like water over the falls. "FUS RO DAH" He exclaimed! He quickly huddled back into the warmth of his bed, his slumbered maiden at his side. He thought to myself, "I'm going to play the **** out of Skyrim today."

It's snowing finally! My wife has drill this weekend 4 hours away and I'm getting out of work early for mucho skyrim. I'm thinking it's high time I join the stormcloak's or the dark brotherhood who knows! Maybe I'll work on alchemy! It's an adventure!!!!!!

I can't decide which side to take, I really can't. They are both being stupid. On the one hand, I support the empire. But it's because I still think of the empire as it was, not as it is. Letting those intolerant Thalmor call the shots is not okay (which I why I get every single one I see to attack me under suspicion of heresy, so I can fight back without getting a bounty).

I am regretting that I followed Ralof through the keep in this play through. I much prefer Hadvar as a character, and his family are far more generous. >:3

I'm making my mage side with the Empire, then having my second character (a SnB Warrior) side with the Stormcloaks.

I know the Stormcloak leader is racist as all hell, but the Imperial leader tried to chop my head off.

I'm working my way through the Stormcloak side right now on my Nord. I have to say it's a pretty good story so far. The stormcloaks have given me not one but two nicknames to represent how awesome I am. (I'm guessing 3 is not far away and it's somewhat like a rank)

They did make me do something I was not happy about. I really had to push though it and felt real remorse after. But that is saying something in and of itself that the story was compelling.

I plan to make my mage toon a High Elf Thalmor/Imperial type of guy and follow that route on my second play through.

I think my thief will just stay out of it and rob them both blind.

I think I'm going to end up going the Stormcloak side as well for the first run through. Quite a few of the quests I'm doing in my achievement frenzy before going further are blatantly anti-Imperial. (I haven't even gotten to the embassy yet and I'm already level 40+... >_>)

I figure I'll go Stormcloak when I make a new Nord. My Breton is probably going to side with the empire.

Of course, the Thalmor already hate me, because I'm a Breton who believes Talos is a god. :P They have already issued kill orders for me. :P I want to see if I can do something like try and join with the Imperials AND destroy the Thalmor presence in Skyrim.

One thing that is irritating me about the Imperial side, though, is that Ulfric challenged the High King to a duel, and the King accepted. I mean, c'mon... Hate him for killing the king, fine. But don't pretend like you have a legal case againt him when the King agreed to an engagement in which one of the two people were definitely going to lose their lives.

Also, is there any way to track down who gave the Dark Brotherhood a contract for you? Because one just tried to kill me, and I wanna flay whoever ordered my assassination...

I'm not thrilled about your options when you finally talk to General Tulius--you basically get to tell him you were at Helgen, and he tells you that he'd be happy to direct you to the nearest prison. Your only possible response is to join the army to prove your innocence. What? I don't get the option to demand an explanation?

I'll probably lean towards the imperial side until they try to force me to choose between two equally ****** options, at which point I will just kill everyone to protest the game forcing me into rigid, crappy choices.

Sometimes I save the game and go kill everyone in Riverwood, just to blow off steam.

One of these days, the game is going to auto-save right in the middle of it.

Hmmm...

That reminds me -- it's REALLY worth it to finish the achievement to restore the Thieves Guild to its former glory if you want to go rogue.

So, has anyone made a Khajiit with Fists of Steel (Heavy Armor perk) and gone unarmed yet?

Also, anyone rolling with a "Battlemage"? I couldn't decide if I wanted to go magic or melee, so I've gone both at the same time. Because I can. Sword in one hand, spell in the other.

At first I went with a robe because of the increase in magicka, but then I realized that I look 200% more badass in the Nord steel armor, so now I'm rocking crappy magicka regen, but an outfit that makes maidens swoon whenever I enter the room.

Optimal? Probably not, but I'm doing it because... **** yeah!

Went more of the Paladin route myself (without the righteousness)- Alteration and Restoration magic combined with a sword and shield. Of course, with such a ridiculously high damage weapon, I might as well just drop the shield and dual wield.

And yea, battlemages can work incredibly well since you'll have both close and ranged attacks.
