Yeah, remember that your power ups will slow down later on if you don't diversify. If you only use Destruction, it's going to initially shoot up, yes. And that's going to get you damage increases. But you go from 25 to 35 WAY faster than you'll go from 70 to 71. So you end up seeing a plateau in your power (though your actual level ups should be fairly constant, since higher skill-ups provide more experience).

By investing in a few skills, you won't see such a huge damage spike. But you'll see a more constant increase.

Personally, I would spike up Destruction initially, but then start trying to approach encounters strategically. That way, you still have high-damage spells to fall back on, but you'll also take other skills up. And don't discount some spells. Fury, for instance, is very nice if you can hit a group with it (especially from ranged before they attack you). But you need skill or they'll resist it, so you don't want to start leveling illusion late.

That it's not scaling like Oblivion or that we can't find definite info on how the scaling is handled?

That it's not like Oblivion.

In Oblivion I was terrified of certain levels where specific enemy types would start showing up. Wraiths, Clannfears, etc. Some enemies just felt overpowered compared to the level they appeared at, and made the leveling up process less of "Cool, more big numbers!" and more "Oh ****, what's going to come at me now?"

I like Skyrim's system. Now I don't need to feel bad if I decide to max speech.

Yah I like the feeling of progress where wolves and certain things are cannon fodder to me now instead of just leveling with you. Although I have wandered into a few things in Skyrim that were WAY stronger than anything around them. But I like that, keeps it exciting.

OMG you can marry Aela the huntress! Wait I dunno if that would be such a good idea after all... she is hot though. I wonder how she would feel about Lydia hanging out in my bedroom all the time.

Apparently her name means "Vomit" though Smiley: lol Still, totally the one I'm picking. I went furry for her! Er, if you know what I mean.

Also, read today that you can get robbed. As in, your house can. Not sure if keeping Lydia there stops the robbery or not, but now I'm paranoid that I'm going to come back and find my favorite possessions missing. At least you can hunt down the thief and kill/pickpocket all your stuff back.

If that son of a ***** touches my massive amounts of crafting materials, I am soultrapping him, enchanting an iron dagger with his soul, then throwing that dagger off the Throat of the World.

Or maybe just use console commands and have a Giant attack him.

Better yet, reverse pick pocket it onto some homeless guy. Spending a lifetime hanging next to dirty crotch sounds pretty damning.

On the level scaling, according to this wiki, enemy leveling is complicated.

Quote:
Many criticized Oblivion's system of leveling enemies, as many hours were spent fighting enemies that were just too strong to take on, and only grew stronger as you leveled up. In Skyrim, this is replaced with a system that is similar to the one in Fallout 3. The level of enemies is determined both by location and level. There will be places with foes you just aren't strong enough to beat at level 1. Upon entering a dungeon in Skyrim the players level will be saved/locked into position. In other words the enemies will be similiar to the level the player is when he/she first enters the dungeon. In the event of entering the dungeon later the player should find, (assuming the player has leveled up since their last visit) that they can more efficiently rid the dungeon of foes. This is due in part to the fact that the foes retained the level that the player encountered them at when he/she first entered the dungeon. Obviously there will be some location where enemies will be stronger and some where they will be easier, especially places that the main questline visit.

Anyway, I feel better about knowing how it works. Being confused constantly while playing can rob you of a lot of the flavor since you spend so much time wondering what the hell is up and down.

Time to restart and make a pure mage this time.

You know what would rock? A Skyrim Talent tree calculator. So you could dink around and look at how you would like to build by level assuming you have the skill high enough. Would be fun for looking at how I want to build my mage and thief.

Google found me this post :

http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/lzl70/skyrim_skill_trees/

Which is nice to look at when you can't play but not quite the same as a calculator app.

That brings me to my next question--what weapon type are people using?

I'm doing one-handed, but can't decide. On the one hand, armor ignore on maces sounds great. But I think I want to use swords, just because I like them more aesthetically. But the whole crit thing is kinda meh to me.

See, I thought I would be the same way, but the mace not only does better damage (and has a better talent effect), but watching my avatar cave in the skull of another zombie with a mace looks way cooler than it would with a sword.

I was honestly disappointed that the one-handed mace wasn't an option when selecting your free Skyforged weapon after joining the Companions.

My bow, mostly. Got a scimitar for when things get dicey (pun intended). Might be switching to daggers, though...not sure.

Got my thieves guild gear now. I look like Altair in brown.

As far as when S&Bing, I go min/max and choose whatever has the higher damage rating for my one handed weapon. At the moment it's a mace. Primarily though, that only gets brought out should someone survive an arrow or two to the face.

I mostly use archery, though I have been trying to use my sword a little more. can't decide if I want to switch to daggers, but heavily considering it now that my stealth is high enough to where I can get behind people reliably.

EDIT: Dig, I've seen the special animation when killing a dragon with a sword. It's pretty cool jumping on their heads and then viciously stabbing them in the skull.

I did this with my daggers earlier last time I played.

I'm using dual daggers and a bow mostly. I have a sword/shield combo but I think I'm gonna toss that entirely. Fighting dragons is fun. I just let them circle above me and they usually try to breath attack me from above so I stun them with Fus Ro and then when they land I swing at the sides of their heads and sometimes even avoid their breath attacks while doing so.

I want too many perks.. Smithing, Sneak, One-Handed, Archery, Lockpicking, Pickpocketing, Light Armor.. I'm gonna be level 61 before I even consider my build acceptable lol. I should try to trim down a bit.

I just got a kill animation on a dragon that was attacking Riverwood. :)

I'm also going to start a second character--a pure Mage this time.

And can any SnB players tell me how they deal with groups of enemies, especially in small spaces? I feel like I drink my entire stock of potions whenever I have 3+ enemies on me at once.

Perks in Heavy Armor, Block, and One-Handed+ btw. My health is at 185 with the Arkay health buff, and I have a full set of superior Dwarven gear...

Hmmm, that seems odd. Do you actively block? Do you have an enchant on your sword? I find the fire enchant is pretty beast. The damage I do with it and without it is extremely different. Although I don't always keep it full if not in a tough spot. If your totally swarmed try stringing them out a bit in a choke point like a hallway so your only facing 1-2 and sometimes they eat magic shots in the back from their own teamates.

I'm kind of a convert of FUS RO DAH now instead of fire breath becuase you can decapacitate multiple enemies in a group and usually kill one before it gets up. But I got just got the improved meditated focus word version of both Fus and Fire breath. The Fus buff (effortless Force) gives me more 25% stagger and it seems I can stagger enemies with sheild bash really easy now. I have not tried the level 3 fire with 25% damage meditation buff yet. I'm sure it owns but Full power Fus is just so fun.

Bad guys are pretty easy to kill when they get stunned and dropped to one knee from sheild to face smash.

*Edit to add that I only potion in active emergencies. Not to top off after fights. I have heal on hotkey and swap it out to top off after a win. Sometimes I dodge around a corner and use it to save pots if I stirred too big a hornets nest.
