So we want to get a PS3 but...Follow

#1 Oct 24 2011 at 1:42 PM Rating: Good
I whined enough at my husband that he agreed to let me get "us" a PS3 for Christmas. We need a blu-ray player because the pile of unwatchable movies is growing, and we've missed out on at least five years worth of current-gen games in addition to not being able to play any of our PS2 games since we upgraded our new TV (the composite adapters aren't working and we gave up trying.) And he gets to pick the first game, so he's getting some Mortal Kombat action along with it. (He still plays the arcade versions on an emulator once in a while. Smiley: lol)

However, I wonder if it'd be a good idea to get a backwards compatible unit, the 60 gig ones, just to hedge my bets? They have refurbished ones on eBay with a 90 day warranty for $300. We have a whole shelf of unloved PS2 games we never eBayed for some reason, and it'd be nice to be able to play them again.

Or should I risk getting a brand new $249 one, and just cross my fingers that Sony re-releases my favorite PS2 games in HD?

Note: FFXI is actually a non-issue, since the media center PC runs just fine to the television and plays FFXI without breaking a sweat, and probably in higher quality than PS3 could put out.

Personally I would just get the 249$ one. There's so many great PS3 games that I never felt the need to go back to my old PS2 games.

They released a bunch of PS1 classic and they are starting to release PS2 classic. The only problem is you never know if they will release the one you want. Also most of them don't get the HD treatment, they are only the original version made compatible with the PS3. As far as I know, only God of war and Ico collection got the HD conversion so far.

Pretty much what feelz said.

In theory, I miss my old backwards-compatible PS3 (R.I.P. 4/2011). I have a newer one without it now, and a stack of great old PS2 games that might as well get sold.

However, in reality, I wasn't really playing them anymore. The PS3 has a nice library, with a ton of awesome stuff still awaiting release, and there are HD remakes and updated versions for a lot of the best old games. If you're just getting one now, you'll already have more than enough to keep you occupied even without backwards-compatibility.

Heck, I can barely keep up with all the games I want to play right now, and I've had the system since its inception. I'd been meaning to go back and play the original AC, but I don't know where I'll find the time when I'm trying to get through Dark Souls and Rage, and with BF3 coming out tomorrow, Uncharted 3 and Skyrim soon after, etc. etc.

Ah, 1st world problems...

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't spend MORE to get a refurbished system that's 4 years old. Just get a new one. And you get the peace of mind of a 1-year warranty, plus the larger HDD.

[EDIT]

Also, the newer ones are quieter.

I'm with the majority on this one; I honestly can't think of a single PS2 game that I would want to re-visit that badly. Smiley: confused

Maybe Armored Core 2?

I would go new, like someone pointed out they are starting to release PS2 classics as downloadable content and I think they are going to hit many of the rare ones as the ones they already released were semi rare (Godhand, Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire) While not HD they do have the option to be upscaled (stretched) and smoothed so they dont look so bad.

Also many games that are big hits are getting full HD upscaling (Sly cooper collection, God of War collection, Metal gear solid collection, Zone of Enders Collection, Resident Evil 4 HD, etc ) So you could get those.

Also pointing out your Husband likes MK games they have MK2 arcade for download on PSN store IIRC.

If your trying to save some money you could be like me and watch craigslist for your area I got an 80 gig PS3 with 6 games for 175 bucks.

They should release Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 with a graphics update. That would be awesome...

Those, and the FFX remake they already announced, make up the bulk of PS2 titles I still want to play with any frequency.

Make it a bundle pack and Sony would win Christmas.

I ended up going with a refurbished 60 gig from ebay. Within 2 months it stopped reading discs and had to hassle with sony to fix it despite the 90 day warranty. They tried to say since the warranty wasn't in my name they didn't want to fix it. I did finally get it fixed for free after a huge hassle and it works fine now. I prob haven't spent 2 hours with PS2 games since I got it.

Yea get a new one.

I have the original 60 gig PS3. Want to know how many PS2 games I've played on it?
0.
Seriously, with choices like Red Dead Redemption, the Uncharted series, and Mod Nation Racers you won't really miss the PS2 games. And don't forget the PSN for a ton of other games. Limbo is just so cool.

If you really do need to play some old PS2 games, I highly recommend grabbing the Ico/Shadow of Colossus collection. A lot of people skipped over them before for whatever reason but they were some of the most unique games on the system. Plus, they will whet your appetite for this.

As an added bonus, you can buy the 160 gig model and then swap out that hard drive for a 500 gig for a few bucks more! Smiley: schooled

I can think of plenty, but i know for a fact i would never actually play them.

I saved a bunch of forward compatible huegxbox games because i loved them so much. That was many years ago and they've never touched the 360.

DONE: Toys R Us offered a pre Black Friday deal of the 320 GB Uncharted 3 bundle for $299 (normal price) with a special extra free $50 gift card that can be used at a later time. This is not quite as good as the "doorbuster" deal Target was offering, but close enough that the difference in cash is worth less than being able to sleep in on Friday.

Since Uncharted 3 was one of the games we planned on buying anyway, this was a no brainer.

My kid is getting a PS3 for Christmas. Does it come with adapters to play on a standard old school CRT? We're thinking of getting him a smallish flat screen TV for his birthday later next year but I'd like to get any special widgets now if I need them rather than "Merry Christmas! We'll stop at Best Buy next week so you can play it..."

I think so. At least, my original model did, way back in the day. My new one came without any cables, but that was a replacement unit.

An HDTV is a must with it.

Yeah, it came with a component cable but it did NOT come with an HDMI cable. Smiley: glare Got an extra one on order from NewEgg right now, but in the meantime, the PS3 is a wonderful paperweight on the coffee table.

I supposed we could unhook the media center computer but running the cables through our giant *** 300 lb entertainment wardrobe is such a chore that I'd rather not have to muck around with the wires more than once a year.
