You consider purchasing a bundle of games from Steam containing games A, B, C, D, E, F & G. You already own games A, B & C so the "new" copies in the bundle are essentially "lost" when you buy them. Assume that you bought A, B & C through Steam so it's easily confirmed that you own them.
Your gut reaction is...
"That's cool, if I don't like the price breakdown for the other games, I don't have to buy it":7 (35.0%)
"They should be giving me a license to install A, B & C on another account/computer or gift them":5 (25.0%)
"They should be discounting/crediting me the value of A, B & C":6 (30.0%)
Something else:2 (10.0%)
Total:20

I voted "Something Else" but what I really mean is either the second or third options.

I started up Steam thinking there was some awesome bundle deal, then I read the thread...

Said "Something Else" but it's pretty much the first one. If the cost of the 4 games as a bundle is less than buying them individually I still save money. So it's worth it anyway. That's exactly what I did with Dragon Age Ultimate Edition. Awakening was $20 alone and the DLC were like $7 each. So even though I already had Origins, I still "saved" a good amount by repurchasing it. I wanted to pay them but $40+ was too much for my tastes (especially since some of the DLC lasts only an hour or two).

Honestly, option 1 does suck but it's not really any problem on the part of Steam or the publishers. Just how it is. Now, it would be quite awesome if options 2 and/or 3 were available, and would definitely be preferred (option 3 would obviously be best depending on the discount, but either way). If this is something you've run into recently, I would recommend contacting steam support and seeing if they can't help you out. I seem to recall others doing stuff like this in the past and they've been pretty generous / understanding of the situation.

No personal issues here. As some might remember (probably not), I went on a small binge this summer when Steam had its sale but I was starting from a point of owning Civ II and Doom so there weren't any conflicts. I didn't buy any of the big $80 bundles anyway, although I did get a few GOTY style editions (game+DLC+box expansions).

I did buy the Humble Bundle last time despite already owning Braid and some other game but, given the circumstances there, it'd be pretty weak to *****. And I did have the option there of downloading the .exe and doing whatever with it.

I posted the poll mainly because I've heard the topic come up elsewhere. I personally went with Option 1 but I'm not a serious purchaser so my opinion maybe be different from those of early adopters and launch-day buyers.

Ideally, I want the third option, but it's not something I can really expect realistically, so I went with the first option. If the new games are worth the price, I'll buy it.

I voted 3, but either 2 or 3 or a choice of one of the 2 should be there.

Can't you "gift" games on steam if you already own them?

The function is there but most publishers don't offer it. So I've heard; I haven't had need to try.

You can also make two Steam accounts and buy everything as a gift with Account A and give it all to Account B, which people say lets you then gift the already owned stuff to someone else. Of course, this workaround only helps if you have someone to gift it to but at least you're theoretically getting your full dollar's worth. If that mattered to you.

Right here is the reason I don't like Digital copies. If you was buying a bundle in the store guess what? You would have 2 copies of the games you allready have which would work on another computer. Also if you didn't need 2 copies you would have the option of putting the games you allready have on e-bay and selling them to get some of your money back.

I have never bought anything on steam and probably never will.

I voted 2, but I'd be fine with either 2 or 3. I don't like the way it works currently.. doesn't make sense.

Sure I'd like them to discount me the games, but I'd also like them to give me everything for free, or even pay me to take the bundle.

I expect option 1. There are so many more significant ways you're being screwed over than them not giving you a better deal on top of an already good deal isn't worth complaining about.
