Ok, fine, some more on it. Glitch is a really unique game and probably my favorite MMO I've reviewed for ZAM to date. It was in Beta for a long time but finally launched this morning after an almost-complete reset (beta testers get to keep their avatar's looks, a couple special and nonfunctional items, and a humorous gift for participating in Beta).

The point of the game? There isn't really a point. There's no real fighting, and a big focus on crafting and social aspects. You can do a bunch of quests or achievements, buy a house (and customize some of it), learn skills about everything from levitation to tool repair. A lot of the fun is just going around exploring the world; it's constantly changing because of players' actions. Animals and plants can vary in a location from day to day. And players are incredibly creative, starting up groups to gather resources, throw parties, or mess with people.

Okay, I'm in (idiggory). I'm really enjoying it--it's like if you made EVE into an indy game, cut out content and the crazy market, and added hilarity.

Pretty much Smiley: lol I described it as EVE's learning schedule with PG-rated Kingdom of Loathing humor and some Civilization gameplay aspects (as you get to build new zones and whatnot). Glad you're liking it so far!

Also, FYI, once you learn 20 skills, each subsequent skill you learn increases the learning time by a small percent. I would imagine it might be worth learning some higher tier skills before you hit the 20 limit; I'm at Animal Kinship VI, for example, and hope to learn the final tier before hitting the limit. Should shave a day or two off the time if I was to wait until I had 25-30 skills.

What I found from Beta is that, while the crating skills allow you to make good stuff (food that restores hundreds of energy, cocktails that give you nifty buffs), they also require a TON of ingredients on your person. They also have rather low time requirements (maybe 3-4 hours for the second and final tiers?), so I'd hold off on them if you can. Furthermore, every food and drink can be bought from specific vendors... or could in Beta at least. That kinda made it more efficient (in my mind) to forego them for a while.

But yes, all the crafting stuff at higher levels requires items from other crafting skills; neat little circle.

My goal is to get out of Groddle, haha. I spent almost all of my time there; need to look at some of the big continents, and the ancestral lands (which seem neat; great quoin rewards, but bandits who steal your items if you run into them, and a time limit of how long you can stay in the zone).

That's rather interesting. I'll have to look into that. As of right now, I'm just kinda wandering about and harvesting things. :P My only real goal is to get bags, lol.

Did you try playing it or just watch the video? The video is pretty trippy; the game itself is pretty easy to pick up. It's mostly exploration and crafting. You kinda make your own goals; again, it's one of those games you will either love or hate.

I did try it out, played it a little this weekend. I like how casual it appears, so i can just get on and **** around for a few minutes. But i dont see the big picture yet.

This, pretty much. When I talked to the president of the Tiny Speck for the article, he compared the overall idea of Glitch as something akin to Sim City, if you were playing as one of the Sims. You create the world, but at the micro level, not the macro.

Also, you can meet the president in-game; his character name is Stoot Barfield Smiley: grin

I started playing a couple days ago to see how it is. Pretty fun... but I just bought my first house and started planting stuff in it. I wonder if they will die when I'm not online? And how long before they die. I'm hoping it's not all Farmville on me and only works if I spend every couple hours on the game. I need to be able to work/sleep.

I am amused. Arya Underfoot and Asha Greyjoy are arguing in chat right now. Woodrow Wilson just told them to stop spoiling the series and MissingNo. just started talking about the changes between the show and the books Smiley: lol

Also, I just finished Mining IV; four freaking days, cut down to three thanks to donating and using the favor on speeding up skills Smiley: sly

No idea about the crops Tirith, sorry. I think they die if they don't have enough water, but I'm not sure how fast the "watered" status lasts... maybe one RL day? Most crops grow in 2-8 hours, I think.

Ya, I planted a few in the morning, and 11 hours later logged on to play after getting home from work and eating supper. Their water level was still around 25-30% and they were fully grown. It looks like even the fast growing crops last quite some time before drying up. My trees are fully grown and don't care if I miss 10-12 hours. My captured pig is just walking around happily.

I'm learning remote heardkeeping right now, and then going for Animal Kinship 7. Then going after the Gardening/Croppery skills. I haven't touched the mining or alchemy skill tree yet. I've donated all my Music Boxes for Favor, and am working on getting my Mab emblem for Gardening III. So far I got Humbaba and Grendaline.

My in game name is Tharon. I have a small tree house in Krifti Crown in Tamila.

Animal, Cooking, and Gardening for me so far. I really should learn Teleportation... probably this weekend after I get my Animal skills maxed.

All good choices; I'm working on Better Learning (II) now, as I just hit the 20 skill limit and learning times will start to take longer. As soon as they are done I'll grab the refining, alchemy, and Intermediate Ad-mixing skills; I just started to make potions before the Beta ended, and I reaaaaally want to do it again (the shrine powders and feritilite dust are AMAZING). After that I'm thinking of getting the Gardening and Croppery skills; whatever the ones are that increase yields from trees (first) and garden plots (second). Last will be crafting skills; not fun to wait that long, but even with the time increases they shouldn't be more than a few hours each to learn once I get started.

I also think that vendor prices increased since beta for food and drink. I remember buying a bunch of chili (which restored like 170 energy) for 170 currants. I saw some the other day for like 650... ouch. Perhaps getting crafting sooner might have been a good idea...

Also, a bit of information about learning skills; man, did I have this wrong before...

It appears that there is actually a sliding scale on when learning skills slows down. I originally said "after 20 skills are learned, your learning time slows down" and that's true... but...

Better Learning Skills improve the player's brain capacity, delaying the 3% time penalty. The Better Learning Skills themselves do not add to brain capacity.

With Better Learning I, 21 Skills can be learned without slowing down (22 with Better Learning I included).
With Better Learning II, 24 Skills can be learned without slowing down (26 with Better Learning I & II included).
With Better Learning III, 28 Skills can be learned without slowing down (31 with Better Learning I thru III included).
With Better Learning IV, 32 Skills can be learned without slowing down (36 with Better Learning I thru IV included).
With Better Learning V, 37 Skills can be learned without slowing down (42 with Better Learning I thru V included).

This means that as soon as you hit that 20 skill limit (or right before), start learning Better Learning. It'll save you a TON of time. You also get the speed bonuses as well as the push-back, so with Better Learning V you'll get a limit of 42 (total) skills before you start seeing increasing times, but you also get 20% faster learning on everything.

*Edit: Stoot might be wrong, however, as people are saying that the 5 Better Learning skills do count toward the increased limit. So at Better Learning V you have 32 other skills you can learn before the time starts to increase. This is likely a bug and will hopefully be fixed.

Are you speeding the time up any? I just saw on their Twitter feed that you can now spend emblems to speed up times; not sure how that works, but I think I'll be doing that for my next long skill (likely the next rank of better learning).

I just started Better Learning III and already brought the time down from over 9 hours to a bit over 7. I think I can get it down to maybe 5 or so...

A note for anyone (but particularly those doing mining): Meditation, and Focused Meditation in particular, is awesome. Meditating will give some mood/energy back, and the cooldown is initially about as long as the time it takes to mine. So you can alternate between mining and meditating to greatly increase your longevity without having to spend any currants on food or potions.

Once you get Focused, you can choose to dedicate all the returns to either mood or energy. I focus energy every 2 times mining and get at least 14 energy back, but usually 16-20 (I've seen as high as 22). Mining costs me 8 energy now (with Mining III). So I can go a veeeery long time before running out of energy.
