So, a long *** time ago, I downloaded Portal when it was free on Steam. That was on my old computer. So after seeing that Portal proposal, I decided to download it on my new computer (with Windows 7 64 bit) and tried to play it. I launch the game, the picture with the fat guy with a valve in his head shows up, then the screen stays black and I hear the error sound. If I hit escape, everything closes and I'm at my desktop. If I hit atl+tab, I see the error pop up, which says "Corrupted or invalid background texture" and some random letters and numbers. I can't click ok at all. I have to right click the Portal thingy on my task bar and close it from there.

I did a Google search to see if anyone else had this problem, and there was a suggestion to put -32bit in the launch options in Steam. I tried that, still no go.

So... what do I do? Smiley: frown And if I decide instead to just buy Portal 2 and play it without playing Portal, will I miss anything, really?

Portal 2 makes a lot more sense if you play Portal 1, but is not necessary. I would try to get the first game working simply to enjoy more Portal because the games are too short Smiley: frown

I'm no expert, but the two things i would start off trying to do is running the game in Windowed mode (-windowed in the launch properties, i believe) and then redownloading the game after that. If that doesn't work, I guess make sure your graphics drivers are up to date. I do hope that it works for you, Portal and Portal 2 are both such great games, and Portal 2 just wouldn't be the same if you hadn't played Portal.

Try doing a repair install. Sounds like you have a corrupted file.

Definitely play Portal before Portal 2. Without a doubt.

Yeah, I'd definitely play Portal first. Don't think of it as some kind of obstacle in the way of Portal 2; it's probably the more enjoyable of the two.

Here is the just of what happens in Portal 1 if you decide to skip it.

A voice instructs you to do a series of test that increase in difficulty. The last one the voice tries to kill you but you manage to escape. You proceed to work your way through the back rooms until you manage to reach the voice. It turns out the voice is a super computer. After an enjoyable fight with this computer, GLaDOS, you get sucked up into the sky. You come to on the surface just long enough to see debris fall from the sky and then you pass out again.

You could get away with just playing Portal 2. It does a great job on catching you up to speed not to mention the first set of puzzles are from the first game, just with a bit more tweaking to fit the theme of the area. Regardless I would keep working on getting Portal 1 up just so you can hear the dialog that GLaDOS spits out, it's hilarious.

Criminy, you take that down right now. Don't even tempt her. There is no reason for her not to play Portal 1 first. She must find a way.

-shrug- Portal is so good that even if you play the sequel before you play the first you will still have a blast. The fun comes from playing with the portal gun and the jokes that are constantly thrown around while doing each test chamber. Those two things won't change regardless of the order you play them.

I tried to start it in windowed mode, and got the same error. Smiley: frown

I guess next I'll try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

Reinstalling seems to have worked for now. :D

Make sure you download the unofficial Portal prequel pack, it's really good and the boss fight is definitely more challenging.

Glad you got it working and played it. I think playing Portal 2 without Portal would be a shame, missing out on the established GLaDOS/Chell "relationship".

Also, combo breaker on your song lyrics.

I'm not sure, but I'm glad you were hearing it for the first time. It makes it that much more awesome.

Which level?

I to beat it, now to wait until tomorrow or this weekend to get portal 2.
My thoughts on Portal: Was fun, should not have waited so long to play it. Was short. Only 19 levels plus 6 if you count the Hard Modes of the few levels (not done time trial ones, I don't like to rush XD).

Which level?

The one where you have to open the door so the energy bolt can come through the portal to activate a platform or something. I keep getting hit by the energy bolt. Test Chamber 11 I think.

Is that the one with the double doors blocking the energy receiver? If so you have to place the cube on the switch for the rear door, then stand to the left/right side of the front door's button while facing it. Once the energy ball passes in front of you immediately move forward to open the door, you only have 1-2 seconds before the ball bounces off the door and back at you.
