So my wife has gotten back into playing WoW (albeit classic WotLK WoW on a private server) but I have been looking for something new.

I just saw this and thought it looked pretty cool, although the music is from Bayonetta(pretty sure the person uploading the video did that though), and at least half the comments are screaming about how it's a direct rip-off of some game called Monster Hunter, which I also might look into.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of posts by admins, mostly about Korean online RPG games published by Nexon. Looking at gameplay videos of these games, they all look kind of interesting. What's more interesting are the comments in the videos comparing them to other games, which is how I found Vindictus... and about a dozen other games that are all more or less the same idea.

What I really like about many of these games is that they seem to be like MMOs, but more action oriented, where combat is not simply standing in front of an enemy trading blows until one runs out of HP...

The problem is, they're all so much alike. They all seem to be Korean, and some are not even available elsewhere. Are any of them even worthwhile?

To give you some perspective, Eastern markets (mostly China and Korea) put out HUNDREDS of F2P MMOs every year. It is ridiculous. Sometimes they are re-releases of failed Western (usually subscription-based) games: for example, Hellgate, which I recently reviewed, is a re-released and expanded version of Hellgate: London, which had been developed by a team of former Blizzard employees.

Some of the games are worth it; some are absolute crap. Our reviews usually do a decent job of sorting them out. I haven't tried Vindictus yet, though that video made it look pretty good. I've only tried maybe a half dozen so far, and my favorite is Rusty Hearts; but it's only in closed Beta.

Here's some of what ZAM has posted on the game:

Ah nice. I completely forgot about BFF Report. I used to watch it all the time.

Vindictus is pretty fun for a while. I played it up to about level 25 on one character. It eventually suffers from the same problem as most Korean MMOs: it gets rather grindy. If you don't mind that, though, or if you have faith in the devs to add more content, it's worth checking out, for the innovation if nothing else.

You never heard of Monster Hunter?
Its crazy big in Japan (enough that when new games come out, there is never enough Discs, and sometimes consoles). The basic idea: go out and kill huge monsters.
The reason Vindictus is compared to Monster Hunters is the way fights happen. You can learn the mob's attack behavior and know when to attack, and when to dodge/get the hell out of the way all by paying attention.
As Locke said, the Korean/Chinese put out tons of f2p MMOs (most have some kind of cash shop) out each year. Some even look like other games (There is Maple Story for example...you can probably find 5 that look just like it, play the same, but use a different theme). I've yet to play a Korean/Chinese MMO that does not become a grinder once you are past level 10, and I usually quit them. Spending hours to gain 1 level is silly.
Another game that is suppose to come out this year (not a p2f) that is also similar to Vindictus' play style is called Tera. It looks pretty neat and I've been waiting to try it out (is a Korean game, no doubt a grinder but I may suffer). It is more of a skilled MMO. Being best geared (from my understanding) will help, but not make you the best [insert class]. What will is your ability to use abilities at the right time. You also have to "aim" your character. No Attacking and then looking away XD IF you don't aim the Fireball/Arrow at the target, it won't hit it.
