Well it's official, the 3DS is struggling in sales. As a response Nintendo has dropped the MSRP from $250 to $170, maybe if we wait longer we can get one for $100.

I like Nintendo, but they seem to have adopted a very Sega business model for their handhelds. You know, releasing way too many systems too close together and not really supporting them appropriately. There is little to no reason to own a 3DS. One, maybe two games.

This definitely makes me more inclined to buy a 3DS. Hopefully it will drop a bit more in the near future.

No, the 3D effects just messed up his eyesight enough to make him misplace it.

Just slightly PO about the price drop. That is a HUGE price drop for something that hasn't been out all that long. I bought it on the day they came out :p

I also think Nintendo is like..going under lol. The 3DS doesn't really have the game support yet. This, imo, is Nintendo's fault. It is like they are making stupid mistakes because they can. . .

I own 3 3DS games: Bust-a-move, Rayman, and Zelda. I have not even put Rayman into the slot. Was pretty much talked into buying it (damn pretty girls using my I like Pretty Girls weakness). Zelda looks neat (graphic update, the 3D is cool), I did enjoy playing it again (for the unknown time). Bust-a-move is b-a-m, you either like the games or you don't.

It COULD be awesome, and I think some day (hopefully soon) it will get there when more games come out for a wider range of choices to pick from.

Pirate side: My flash card works on it, so I still get to play all my fav mini/multi-game NDS games and not have to carry a backpack full of games.

To be fair, I recall a thread in which we encouraged you to wait. :P

Nah, all companies have console releases that flop. This one just especially sucks for Nintendo, because they probably invested a lot more money into it than for previous models. But, honestly, it's not surprising that it isn't selling so hot. 3D alone isn't a big enough reason for most people, especially if they already have a regular DS. Maybe if (as lolgaxe suggested) they weren't releasing a new model every 3 seconds, the 3DS could have earned more hype.

And Nintendo's been trying really hard to get designers to sign up for the DS. But, the thing is, no one wants to design for a console with low sales, because then their expected sales drop. The price drop is a push to get people to buy them, so developers will design for them, so people will buy them. :P

The biggest problem is that, at the end of the day, it's still just a DS. It has a few really nice features that the regular DS lacks of course, but nothing major. ANY game a company wants to design for the 3DS could be more easily designed for the DS and see much, much larger profit margins.

And that original price was just stupid. I could have bought a Wii/360/PS3 for that price. :\

Frankly, Nintendo should have held off on the 3D stuff and just focused on developing their next handheld. I mean, you look at the 3DS and compare it to the handheld that Sony's going to be releasing and, well, there's really no contest. Why pay for one or two additional features when you could pay for a whole slew of new features on a next-gen console?

So yea.. I skipped over the middle of the link..

Quote:
In addition to the price cut for new consumers, those who bought/buy a 3DS before the August 12 markdown will be able to download 20 free games from the 3DS eShop. That offer comes in the form of ten NES Virtual Console games (including classics like Zelda and Super Mario Bros.), which will be available after September 1, and ten Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games (like Yoshi's Island and Metroid Fusion), which will be available a little later.

^ That is pretty awesome. At least I get some free games for having paid full price.

OoT was remade for the 3DS. But they are letting people choose 20 free games--10 from the NES era and 10 from the GBA one.

Is Yo Noid one of the choices? I'd be tempted if Yo Noid was one of the choices.

If I couldn't already emulate it on my PSP. I mean if I couldn't emulate then I'd be tempted.

Personally, I'd avoid that one.

Quote:
Today, company president Satoru Iwata spoke to shareholders in Tokyo, accepting responsibility for the 3DS and its recent troubles. In addition, Iwata said that he and other executives will be taking significant pay cuts.

For Iwata, that translates to a 50 percent cut from his annual salary of approximately $2 million. Directors close to the project will see a 30 percent pay cut, and other executives will get their pay reduced by 20 percent.

"We decided that if we take brave measures now," Iwata wrote in a letter, "there's high likelihood that a many players can enjoy the Nintendo 3DS in the future."

I gather that their stock took a massive hit as a result of all this. Yamauchi, their old president, owns something like a 10% share. Supposedly the downturn cost him something in the range of $300,000,000.

Dear Nintendo,

The 3DS was a good idea, but you'd think that you'd learn something from the PS3 and give it a solid lineup at launch. Way to repeat the mistakes of your competition.

Sincerely,
Iamadam

Way to repeat the mistakes of your competition your own mistakes by doing the same thing with Wii U.

Solid lineup at launch? Hell, they didn't even have the OS finished at launch. It was months before advertised features finally got added in an update. They made the same mistake as SE did when they launched FFXIV, they rushed it to market entirely too soon and the thing just wasn't ready for it. Now they are paying the price.

And realistically, their launch lineup was better than most systems can boast. The real problem is that they thought the allure of 3D would be enough to have people lining up for them.
