I usually played a pure mage character in Oblivion, and I never had any problems. In fact, in Oblivion, Linear Warriors, Quadratic Wizards is in full effect. In fact, with how easy it is to completely break the magic system, mages end up coming closer to "physical god" than anything.

After one post you should probably go outside and not come back.

No. No it does not. Perhaps you should just give up now and leave the talking to the grownups.

So instead of fighting RMT, they're building it directly into the game. This will not end well.

This.

A thousand times this.

I mean, seriously, what's up with this? No mods? And in-game RMT?

It's like this is everything we feared from the Activision merger. But this time it's actually happening.

To be fair, EVE does RMT well. They let you buy Pilot License Extensions, which are an in-game item that can be used by you or someone else to add +30 days to your game time (and it's more expensive than a subscription by $5). You can sell these in-game for ISK (their currency). So you can literally keep your subscription going just by playing (as long as you are innovative enough to make 350 million ISK in 30 days, which isn't easy unless it's ALL you do).

So, basically, they are letting some players pay the subscription fees for other players, in exchange for those other player's hard-earned ISK.

And since the market is a massive part of the EVE universe, and all this has done is make game time a commodity, it works out. And they do limit how often you can buy it (I think it's 1 every 2 days), and the market has a pretty nice equilibrium to the number of people buying to the number of people selling.

[EDIT]

The point, which I forgot to add, is that adding official RMT into games can have a huge impact on limiting illegal RMT (which still exists in EVE, but not to the extent of every other MMO I've seen). The problem is that you need a real market in the game, which I doubt they'll implement in Diablo.

All that said though, you don’t have to use the real money auction house, and it was revealed the team were also offering up a separate gold auction house, where you’ll use the game’s own currency to buy items.
So now we even have to decide which Auction House to use?

Of course not. Who's going to post anything on the ingame currency auction when you cna instead sell it for RL money and pay for beer, blow and prostitutes instead?*

unfrickingbelievable.

thank you blizzard for inviting the IRS into my gaming habits. but only if i choose to do so, right?

Quote:
“Percentages really incentivise us to manipulate the system,” says lead designer Jay Wilson, “and we don’t even want the incentive to do that, much less actually doing it.”

Despite the flat fees they take, Blizzard don’t expect it to be a money spinner for them. “We expect it’ll break even,” lead designer Jay Wilson says.

“We talked about this as a service we wanted to provide players, and not primarily as a financial model… we don’t know if it will make us money. It would be nice if it did, but as long as we don’t lose money, that’s really what we care about: that we provide the players with a great experience that doesn’t put us out of business.”

I asked if they’d still do it even if they couldn’t take a cut of the sales. “Absolutely,” says Jay.

does anybody believe this ****?

ten years ago people reverse engineered the decks on online poker sites, to great profit. one would assume the 'always on' connection is an effort to combat this type of thing.

wasn't there a wow patch that manipulated drop chances? as in, "hey you've gathered 9 of the 10 items needed, and killed 15 in a row with out the last..... enjoy an increasingly increasing chance from here on out until you get it."

it's freaking gambling, except it's not subject to online gambling laws. heard any stories lately about blizzard lawyers taking down botting software or pirate servers? i wonder what the hell they've been doing lately...

You have no idea how close to reality this statement could potentially become.

Years ago there was an article from some accountant/tax attorney/tax auditor/someone knowledgeable on US tax law (I'm pretty sure the article was from '06ish, so I don't remember specifics).

The article was about taxation of virtual property and currency and why the industry hasn't attempted to go after RMT. Basically, what it all boiled down to was how in-game items and currency were classified. In order to prosecute, they would have to be reclassified and a real world monetary value would have to be given to them in order to prosecute. The problem with doing this is that the reclassification and the addition of a set monetary value would open everything up to taxation by the IRS, regardless if you sold it for real world money or not. Every time you got a piece of new gear you could potentially have to pay taxes on it.

Second life has managed to stay just below the IRS's radar for years, but the RMT and transfer of real world items for virtual currency has been brought up a few times. Second Life also taxes transactions when currency goes from one form to the other.

EVE and PLEX (The gamecards idig was talking about) have managed to stay off the radar for the most part, but the big scandal a few years ago did bring attention to the way their economy is setup and how it has real world influence.

Second Life and EVE aren't based in the US which could have something to do with the IRS keeping their hands out of US based players pockets. Unfortunately, Blizzard is in the US.

Here's an article I found, but not the one I was talking about.
http://yalelawjournal.org/the-yale-law-journal-pocket-part/legislation/why-the-irs-has-not-taxed-income-from-virtual-world-transactions-.-.-.-yet/

My issue at this point is that WoW and the associated RMT is specifically referenced in several of the more recent articles, a reference that could easily shift to Diablo 3 once this gets out. A lot of it is going to depend on how Blizzard reports these transactions. If this takes off and Blizzard turns this into a cash cow, the IRS is going to want their cut, and there's a good chance that the reclassification required to do that could extend to virtual items and currency as a whole, and not those just being sold for real world goods and services.

I doubt that this would actually make them money, or at least much. I just don't like the idea of it in the game. I shouldn't EVER have to spend money to be competitive in the game. If someone can completely gear themselves in the best stuff using real world cash, then it isn't realistic to expect me to be able to compete with them using only in-game cash and my own farming.

If they put limits on the marketplace in terms of what you can sell (like limiting gems at 75% upgraded, etc.) then it might not be something I really care about. But you shouldn't be able to get a six-socket Blade of Insta-Death on it. Anything that could potentially be used right away in competitive play should be limited to trading and farming.

Though even that wouldn't actually work, because it just gives scammers an avenue. Offer to sell an <insert rare, awesome item> for $50, have them buy some stupid item on the AH for it, and then just trade it normally.

Competitive how? Last I checked, Diablo isn't exactly a competitive game. PvP is a rather limited scene in Diablo 2, and I can't imagine it getting much better in this one. I don't really care if some rich kid maxes out his character. It's not like I have to play with that person.

PvP was alive and well in DII when I played. I'd practically call it flourishing, actually.
There were a ton of people who raised characters for dueling purposes.

No real competitive PvE play, but there was definitely PvP readily available.

If you don't remember, you could flag yourself as aggressive towards players in your world (and form alliances as well). That allowed you to attack (and be attacked by) them. Plenty of people created worlds designed for 1v1, 2v2, etc. duels. And the rules varied a lot as well. Since you dropped stuff when you died, losing could mean a significant loss. That was the only real issue in the game, since there was no way to set (and more importantly enforce) those rules.

Even the nightmare dueling scene was larger than you'd imagine (considering 1 loss was a permanently dead character). That's where the ability to automatically get all the best items would be particularly felt.
