It's been (mildly unfairly) dubbed 2D Minecraft, and on first glances you can see exactly why. However once you play the game for a while you realise it's more like Minecraft and Castlevania had a baby. I've loved the last few days of playing and if anyone wants to start a server with me I'd be more than willing to play with you guys.

I actually caught a clip of this the other day looking for a minecraft video and it mildly piqued my interest. I might jump on in the future, if/when I do I'll message you (or Kali assuming you two are still together?).

Anyone playing this?

I found this guy sitting in a tunnel.

If i hit it with a hammer, I take like... 25 damage. Nothing else seems to hurt it. I haven't tried hitting it with an explosive yet.

It's a Demon Altar. You can't pick it up and move it, but while standing at it you can craft certain items.

I picked up the game for ~$3 bucks today. But have not started playing yet. Looking forward to giving it a spin.

I noticed just now that the 75% off didn't last the whole day, it is back up to 50% off. 4.99 instead of 2.49

Must have been too popular, they realized they could make more money.

It's been at 25% off for the week. I've seen it guessed that someone accidentally added today's intended 50% to the "base" 25% off for the 75%.

Seems plausible enough for me.

A nice little bonus for those that were camping today's sales, I guess.

This game is pretty fun.

I got me a crappy wood shack. But its got my crafting benches, forge, anvil, alchemy table and whatnot. My house may be shoddy but I do have a gold pickaxe, gold broadsword, and silver chainmail lol.

Mostly I just go further and further underground right below my house. Then pull my haul back home with a teleport save/exit. Craft all I can and head back down with health potions and as much bag space as I can free up.

I built "Guide" his own crapshack but he don't seem to like it. I even followed the directions for NPC homes from the wiki. Instead he thinks its more fun to leave his house at night and open the doors on mine. I sealed him in his crapshack one night when he pissed me off. Smiley: lol I build another ramshackle motel hoping to spawn the next NPC but no love yet.

Highlight Items so far:

Gold Pickaxe, so much faster can't wait to get the next one.

Ring of Regeneration from a gold chest. Saves a lot on potions.

Grappling hook. Don't leave home without it.

Back to digging! (I made it to the lava, was so much ore down there. The lava reaaally hurts though... what I had to try at least once?)

I have been playing for a few days, and last night I finally made it deep enough to actually start getting stronger.

I found multiple fields of the glowing mushrooms, surrounded by skeletons and undead miners.

I found 2 or 3 crystal hearts, and a ton of gold. I have a gold broadsword and gold pickaxe, axe, hammer.

I found a:
Boomerang (you can aim it, fire, it comes back, but it doesn't pick up items).
Cloud in a Bottle (Equip it to have double jump)
Regeneration Ring (Awesome)
Shoes that make me run fast (only good for traveling along straight distances).
Magic Mirror (20 Mana, sends me back to my spawn point)

And a few other things. I stumbled upon five gold chests down there, most of the stuff came from them, and then I picked up the chests and put them in my house.

I have four NPCs living with me.
Guide
Merchant
Demolitionist
Nurse

I got attacked by a blood moon a few game nights ago and they all died, but they respawned relatively quickly. Demolitionist wouldn't respawn until I got my bombs out of my chest and held them for a while.

Once you hit the underground it really opens up. The glowing mushroom caverns are filled with corridors, chests, gold, silver, etc. I reached lava and died (double jump failed as I hit the ceiling and fell into the lava).

After that I decided to explore up top a bit, just started walking to the right, and beyond a large desert I found the dungeon. The Old Man was in front of it. I didn't enter the dungeon, don't think I'm strong enough yet, and I'm not 100% sure how I get the Old Man to let me in.

Then I ran all the way left and the sky started changing colors. Found a large cliff and walked down, the music was a bit different, I think it was a Jungle. There were multiple colored slimes and everything had a light green color. I teleported home since I was in a pit and a bunch of slimes jumped onto me.

All in all it's a fun game.

This is my Current home, housing all my NPCs.
Screenshot

This is a bunch of grass platforms I use to gather mushrooms from for potions.
Screenshot

I've yet to make a pond of water, I think water in this game doesn't infinitely fill like in minecraft, and I don't feel like gathering buckets and buckets to bring up.

I took the bait and talked to him at night. He is a boss. A big old skool skeleton with swirly arms and whatnot lol. He kicked my ***** mostly becuase I panicked and did not use any of my good ranged attacks. I'll go back and hit him later.

I made it to the bottom though under the blue mushroom and lava layer. It's hell! Was pretty awesome though a blue demon imp shot fire balls and side scrolling shooter looking triple blue rings of death at me. Which knocked me into lava... taste like burning!

I like your house design. Basic and functional. I guess I should just build bigger and let the NPC's live with me rather than making separate shacks for them. I'll try that now and see if they start spawning with the conditions that I already meet.

Yup, built my house out a bit and the NPC's started spawning. Skeletron is a hard boss btw. Your supposed to do the easier ones first. I got the spawn item for eye of Cthulu and I plan to summon him later tonight as my first boss. :)

Oh and here is my modest abode:

Oh hi there, I must have not visited this forum much the past few days... loving the hell out of this game, and about to create a new map to use for multiplayer since my current one is about mined out. Yall are welcome to join me, but I'd rather not publicly post the info (I'd rather not let in people I don't know) so PM me if you're interested.

Hmm this does not look good. (Me vs Cthulu.)

Screenshot

The Eater of Worlds! I summoned him on a 500 Ebonstone block and fighting lattice I built near my house. The good part about that is not fighting him in the actual corruption and having a nice platform lattice to dodge around on. Also if you die you spawn in your house at the bed you set your spawn to and don't lose the fight. The bad part is he occasionally eats your NPC's and devourer worms spawn in your house until you dismantle the block. :D

Other recent highlights:

Farming meteor armor and making a lightsaber. Holy Crap though those meteor heads hurt.

Ball of Light. Best thing ever.

And a Goblin army invaded my village. That was rad.

This game is a lot more than just minecraft 2D. It has fun old school 2d Boss fights, Events, and armor and weapon progression paths. It's a MMO/RPG in a lot of ways, but fully single player if you want. Best 3 dollars I ever spent.

Oh and Vataro I might be inclined to jump on multiplayer and try to hit the dungeon after I run out of single player options later.

Best part is being able to log your same character into multiple games and servers, you can collect items and stuff from each one and bring them where ever you want :) I joined Vataro's server, and was instantly killed by apparently falling to death. Probably a bug. I respawned right where I died just fine. The tried to jump to the top of his maze of one spot brick tower. Only fell a couple times.

I'm definitely not looking forward to the Goblin Army attack. I haven't found any Shadow Orbs in my single player game either. But I just barely reached Lava, so I haven't been into Hell yet. Found a total of 9 Demonite ore so far.

And yes, this game is much more than Minecraft. It's like a Multiplayer Castlevania with crafting.

I did find an Underground Jungle last night. Those hornets are stupid, but they have a lot of HP. Is there any way to set up teleport points? I have the Magic Mirror to teleport back to my spawn point, but I hate having to travel all the way back down to my latest exploration point.

I'm sporting full shadow armor now and got my Nightmare Pick which is just sick speed mining.

Crafting and boss spoilers below: (I read the wiki anyway which is really good. http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Terraria_Wiki )

Cthulu drops 50-60 Demonite and you can summon him as many times as you need. Stuff is too rare to mine imo. I had about 3 bars before I summoned Cthulu. Take 6 lenses to a demon alter to create summon items.

You need Eater of worlds next to get the shadow scales. He pops on your 3rd shadow orb. Get purification dust from the Dryad who spawns after you kill Cthulu to get through the bricks to a shadow orb, or alternately dynamite. Or you can summon Eater of worlds with Worm bate made from evil dust and disgusting chunks. You have to be in corruption or build a 500 stone corruption shrine to get him to pop. He dropped enough scales for me on one kill though. Flail weapons like the Ball of Hurt work well on him because you can angle it through his body for multiple hits.

I'm working my way through the jungle underground now so I can upgrade my grappling hook.

Another serious Spoiler on progression path, don't read this if you want to figure it out, I mostly figured this out on my own:

Progression in single player is kind of:

Mine copper>Iron>Silver>Gold Each armor respectively, can skip ahead as the Ore gods smile on you.

Explore corruption a bit. Pop 2 Shadow Orbs or so. (Third one is a mean boss) Make the summon item for Cthulu.

Skippable but fun: Farm the meterorite that falls after you pop a shadow Orb. ( Warnign this is hard without a Obsidion skull to protect you from fire blocks) Make some novelty stuff. Sadly the defense on this armor is the same as gold but it looks cool and the laser gun is fun)

Kill Cthulu, then Eater. Make Awesome Shadow tools and Armor.

Explore under jungle. Make cool stuff. Pop chests get more hearts.

Future for me: Skeletor.

Hell + Dungeon.

Profit?

I may hit the wall soon been playing this game pretty hard. >.>

I have not found a teleport back to somewhere other than your spawn option. Just The Mirror. I do know you can make a temp shack and bind you spawn to a bed if you are near an area you are dying allot in. Just be sure to put you gold in a piggy bank so you don't risk losing it when you go splat way underground. :)

No, but there are a limited number of bosses, and I think there is one dungeon per map.

Eventually you will do everything you can.

I think the major weakness of Terraria as compared to Minecraft is the 2D nature of the game. Terraria has a greater challenge, more threatening enemies, more expansive crafting and items, and less frustrating mechanics, though it does lack the logic controls and physics mechanics of minecraft.

However, once you do and get everything in Terraria, the only thing left is open ended gameplay, construction. And building 2d creations is far, far less rewarding than 3D sculptures.

I made a hellevator pipeline strait down to hell from my houses basement. I made a mage tower out of dungeon bricks that reached the sky. I found all the floating islands on my map. I made a skyway express that spanned from coast to coast for running with Hermes boots to any of the area's on my map.

I got max health and mana. The top tier of armors in all biomes. Beat all the bosses. Spawned all the NPC's.

Now if I was so inclined after all that I could build projects. I have seen some really nice stuff on the O forums. But that's just not my thing. I enjoyed the game for the exploration, crafting, and events more than anything. But hell a 3 dollar game that gave me almost 60 hours of extremely compelling and addictive gameplay is a win in my book any day.

I fired this up and immediately began sucking. I can't figure out the workbench -- I made it and placed it but, when I get close to it, I just pick it up. Tried Googling for it and everyone just says "Put it on your hotbar" which it is. But when I try to use it, I just toss it a short distance, walk over to it and pick it up again.

I'm thinking there's more to the game than pinwheeling slimes to death and throwing furniture around Smiley: grin
