I fired this up and immediately began sucking. I can't figure out the workbench -- I made it and placed it but, when I get close to it, I just pick it up. Tried Googling for it and everyone just says "Put it on your hotbar" which it is. But when I try to use it, I just toss it a short distance, walk over to it and pick it up again.

I'm thinking there's more to the game than pinwheeling slimes to death and throwing furniture around Smiley: grin

You don't have the correct item needed to place it yet; head back to Norfair and look for the Ice Beam so you can freeze it to the ground.

Same thing happened to me at first. You can't have your inventory menu open when placing items. If you have it open it thinks you are chucking them rather than placing them. ;)

Holy crap, that is the least intuitive game I've played in recent memory. I finally figured out how to place the bench and now can't figure out my house. Got a big ole wall but can't place the door. Read all the "guides" saying you need a three block gap, which I have but... whatever. I guess I'll fumble through it until I figure it out or give up.

I'll happily admit that I have no experience in this sort of game so maybe it's just not designed for a true newbie learning curve.

Put a block of wood underneath the spot where the door is going to go. I don't think you can place them on Dirt. You can't be standing in the area the door is going to be placed either. To use any items you can't have your inventory open, and need to put them in the hotbar.

The "Wall" blocks are for the background wall, not for actual walls that will block things. Stone/Wooden walls will stop monsters from spawning in a closed in area.

Wooden platforms can be jumped through and dropped through. Press down (s) to drop through a platform. Monsters can' jump and drop through platforms, so they don't make good protection. They don't count as walls either for rooms for NPCs, so you can't make one big house and divide it using platforms.

Once 3 NPCs move into your house/village, you will notice a large radius around your house were monsters will not spawn, even outdoors. It is very nice for building, etc.

Yeah, I finally noodled it through. I stand by my comments though. And all the guides have helpful suggestions like: "first, build a house!" Smiley: laugh

You can place a door on dirt but as others said, it has to be a three block gap otherwise the game refuses to place one there. Grass though can be annoying as it prevents something from being placed there.

Might I suggest taking a peak at this if you get confused on what to do next.

I noodled through enough last night to have a crappy house, a couple NPCs slumming with me, some copper armor and an iron sword. I've got a growing heap of materials though including six gold bars I just made. My house is really just a couple rectangles with a tunnel underneath and some doors (and the required torch/table/chair). I'm gonna have to work on that Smiley: laugh

The mushroom farm was nifty. I'll have to try that -- give me something to do with all my spare dirt.

Hehe yeah I started making each room really nice and tailored to each npc then I couldn't be ***** to do so. First floor of my npc condo is really nice, every room above that though is a chair, table and two torches (because one would just be cruel Smiley: tongue).

Any tips on how I'm dorking up my alchemy table? The guides say to just place a potion on a table or platform but I keep drinking my potions rather than placing them. What am I doing wrong?

Use an empty glass bottle not a full potion. (Sand makes glass, glass makes bottle)

So what's multi-player on this thing like? Is it a persistent world? Does the guy who plays the most just strip mine everything and leave you resource-less? Is it competitive?

Multiplayer is done by joining a friend on a server (world) they host and it's persistent as long as the person has the server running. Personally i find it more enjoyable if each player starts with a fresh character in a fresh world so you arent being carried by a guy with a lightsaber.

There are more monsters in multiplayer, and its co-op rather than competitive.

The new lava rules suck. A single pixel's depth of lava now burns like you're immersed and you can't place items on lava so there's nothing you can do except try and build over it or dig holes to contain it -- if it all actually flows in which it doesn't do when it's a single pixel in depth.

That sucks.

In other news, a couple friends and I have made a server dedicated to hardcore characters. I didn't get to play much last night so I'm still fine, but they're both on their fourth characters so far. Smiley: lol

How do I kill the Guide NPC? The little **** keeps opening my doors and letting zombies inside. I think I'll trap him in a small little room of his own with no exit...

You can't kill the guide. Well, you can but he'll magically come back once you leave the screen and return.

You can do something like trap him in lava or get a "Guide Voodoo Doll" from Hell and throw that into lava instead. But he'll still come back.

If you make it so that his part of the house can only be left by jumping high in the area outside of his room, he seems to stay put.

All the other NPCs wander around as well. But, as you gain more NPCs, there's a wider "no spawn" zone around your house so it becomes a moot point.

The easiest way is to just make a pit for him. You'll have to do it intelligently though - make it so there's at least 3 blocks of height + 2 wide for him to jump up/down from, then once he gets down there remove the blocks so he can't get out.

Alternatively, mine out the area around your house so it's on a hill, with the doors at the edge of the plateau. Then he'll never leave. True zombie-proof bunker that way anyway (for blood moon safety).

The best way to build your home is to simply build it above ground. Npcs will walk through doors, but they won't fall down the wooden planks. This also guards you against invasions and can be used for effective lens farming later.

I took advantage of the sale and goddamn this game is addictive.

I haven't gone to bed on time in three days. Smiley: laugh
